  • Here we go!
    This time i bringed my personal TESLA MODEL S PLAID for a ride on the mother Nordschleife!
    This is the first public session of 2023, not optimal condition as you can see with dirty track due to the race day before and little rainy on some part of the track, only 8°c outside temperature aswell
    So very very gentle lap just for testing it
    So what can i say?….well as expected the car is AMAZING, offcourse it was not a fast lap but we can feel the potential of the car here and most importantly the car feel easy, well balanced and safe, which is super important on the Nordschleife
    The car not overheated during the lap as we can experience on the model 3, anyway the battery pack became red after the third lap, even with this limp mode we have something like 500hp, so enough for continuing driving around on the track and overtaking 90% of the cars here :-)
    No problem with the brake as you can see, i had a constant brake feeling during the all test (10 laps on total) but i upgraded it, see below the spec of the car
    Spec of the car:
    Tesla model S plaid in track mode at 95% soc
    50% FRONT 50% REAR traction repartition
    60% brake regeneration
    traction control off
    Micehlin Ps4s stock on stock wheels
    Brake pads carbotec xp 10 on MOUNTAIN PASS PERFORMANCE front and rear 408mm (original Tesla brakes calipers) RBF 650 brake fluids, work as same as Tesla carbon ceramic brakes!! a very good brake package for under 6000euros!!

      We have a Motec on our Plaid installed by Sasha at Mountain Pass Performance so we can watch temps very closely and have tested/tracked the car quite a bit over the last 18 months. The battery on the Plaid display will stay green all the way until it is pulling power a little over 60C. If you are really accelerating hard that's just a few seconds before it turns red. The heating of the pack is non-linear as well - Sebastian was not on the power 100% for long periods of time during the lap which is when the heat generation is significant. As he said, this was a 'gentle' lap to test the car. The neutral point is about 450-550hp (depending on ambient temps) - at that power level the car's radiator and AC system can remove enough heat such that the battery temperature stays steady. If you don't go 100% then the car has much more time to remove heat and much less heat to remove and will drive for quite a while.
      If someone cranked it up to 10/10ths the car will only do a few miles before pulling power. We haven't been to the ring of course, but I'd guess you would get about 2/3rds of a lap (6-8 miles) at most in max attack - so really for laptime the game would be to use power where it benefits time the most, and not where it doesn't.
      Yes, the Plaid is a passing machine and it's a ton of fun to have all that power available!

    • @sebastianvittel74
      @sebastianvittel74  Год назад +22

      @@teampgr this is exactly the point!
      Even On a better track conditions, for a laptime attempt i will only be 100% of throttle at 3 places i think, rest of the time only 50/60% of the throttle for avoiding this overheating 😓
      That’s a shame, a good start from tesla will be to make an update where we can use sport instead plaid on track mode, then it can be manageable more easy…

      @konradlindblad7860 Год назад +2

      @@teampgr Would it help with the temps to switch off Brake Regen? And is there any way to upgrade the cooling, like larger radiators and/or better fans?

    • @teampgr
      @teampgr Год назад +3

      @@konradlindblad7860 No - the regen maxes out in the ~250kw range and the heating is non-linear, that level doesn't really generate any meaningful heat which you can see in the logs. It's when the pack is at 400-600-800kw where the heat is generated. The inverters are working harder when they are doing regen, but they also are not the limiting factor.
      Stay tuned for more attempts to cool the pack... :D We've got something we are trying out. Theoretically on a Palladium (Not any 3 or Y) car cooling could help.

      First of all Sebastian is very good as you say, and he isn't going 10/10ths on this lap. But that said the car is very well behaved dynamically stock. We have modified our car with the help of Sasha from Mountain Pass Performance and it is even better. It doesn't do anything snappy - the weight of the car is all very low to the ground of course in the pack/motors, the balance is 50/50 and the car is doing 1000hz traction control to ensure it stays where you are pointing it. The difficulty is just because of the insane acceleration and the speed which it can attain so quickly. It's a ton of fun!

    Hey Seb Vittel 😁 Enjoyed your lap! I race a Plaid up Pikes Peak for @UnpluggedPerformance You are smooth, fast, and responsible with traffic, even in tricky ‘Ring drizzle conditions 😮 A good package stock, don’t you think? Except for brakes. When I hot lapped Laguna Seca and Willow Springs, they fried instantly. 1/2 lap. But Unplugged can fix that and improve handling a lot. I love the massive, instant, electric torque, and the super-low center of gravity helps hide the heavy weight. Our race Plaid, “Dark Helmet”, has big brake upgrade, wide fenders, wheels, control arms, race shocks, and more: huge aero. Great lap, hope to see you out there sometime!

      And when one considers the price and how nothing that can keep up with it on the track can be had for less than five or six times as much money, and those cars seat two and cost enormous amounts to maintain too.

      @paulronan6770 Год назад +3

      @@tribalypredisposedI respect electric cars and fascinating performance. But massive exaggerations. Your equivalent car besides being 2 door would be a porsche 911 turbo s. Nurburgring time of 7:15 with a roughly 200k price. Plaid is roughly 100k. Add 50k to each for extras. Idk where 5 to 6x figures you assumed came from.

    • @paulronan6770
      @paulronan6770 Год назад +2

      @@tribalypredisposedand a audi rs3 got within 5 seconds of the plaids time and is half the price. Put a stage 2 tune on rs3 for a few grand and is just as fast as the plaid on the nurburgring for half the cost. And as far as maintenance, you are correct that on average it's cheaper but let's be real. Tesla are only acquired new or within a a year or two of production. Electric cars have a huge maintenance that will slap you in the face if you drive a tesla longer than a few years. On top of that electric fires being even more dangerous than that of ICE. Fixing a flooded gas car isn't rocket science. Fixing a flooded electric car is a death sentence. And electric cars are not better for the environment. Same technique to build as ICE cars minus the exhaust gas.

The G forces are different to bikes as you sit up more, where as when you go that fast on a superbike you are almost lying down. Absolutely insane experience. I still enjoy and prefer dinosaur powered engines though, they have character. The speed of the plaids is basically not necessary on the street, but it's fun to have. I get both sides of the argument.. the future is incredibly fast, yet soulless.
