The part that most people don't get is how hard/expensive it is to build a 9.6s internal combustion car to run 9s consistently. And this comes with something like the equivalent of 80+ mile per gallon, and a warranty. Even look at the Dodge Demon 170. Needs a prepped surface, slicks and skinnies to run it's high 9. And I am pretty sure it gets probably 8 miles per gallon!
The other thing people don't get about EVs is that the engineers actually have to tune the performance DOWN to a level the car can handle. If you unleashed the actual limit of the motors it could sheer the axles. In fact when Richard Morgan of Classic Electric Cars put an old Tesla motor in an 80s Porsche 928 he twice had to replace the axles with stronger ones because they couldn't handle the torque.
@@trevorberridge6079 if you put 1000hp engine into a car that weighs 1200 lbs less than a plaid and has 2x the range, yes it too will snap propshafts lol. there is nothing magical about a electric motor. the antiquated way in wich it charges, and the fact that it looses power but has the same weight makes it a dinosaur. try racing the plaid when it has 20% power, against say a 911 turbo with 20% fuel lol. gets lighter yet delivers 100% power.
@@ct1762 A Plaid with 20% SOC will do 9.94 seconds on the 1/4 mile trapping 136 mph, which is still faster than a 911 Turbo. Sure there's nothing magical about an electric motor, but the plaid is the only production vehicle out there with a carbon wrapped motor which solves the problem of electric vehicles having bad top speed. Also, a 911 Turbo with a full tank is slower than if it only had 20% fuel right?
It took Tesla only 1 year to surpass the Taycan turbo S since it was launched in 2019, the Plaid has been on the market for +3 years and is still unbeatable (except for a Lucid, but it costs almost three times as much) and Tesla since 2020 There is still room for improvement for the Plaid and without forgetting that the Roadster is in development, Tesla engineers are definitely crazy
The tri-motor drivetrain was first introduced in the Tesla Roadster 2.0 back in 2017. So they've had the technology for a while now. Also, after the Plaid delivery event, Franz (Chief designer) said that the new motors are capable of a lot more power but were software locked. So yea, Tesla engineers are definitely a crazy bunch.
There are a few cars that can beat the Plaid now (such as the Rimac Nevera and McMurtry), however to be fair they are not mass produced and cost upwards of around £2m and £1m respectively. For a mass produced car that is arguably "affordable" for people, the Plaid is still incredible especially now it has the track pack.
Here in the US, the Plaid is running 9.2s in the 1/4 mile at 150+ mph on public roads. There are vids everywhere on RUclips to confirm it. It'll run that virtually anywhere anytime.
I want to see a Tesla model 3 plaid, same power train as the S plaid, but 1800kg and much smaller body. I wonder if anything can beat that in a drag race.
The model 3 battery is not prepared to deliver so much power, in fact the Plaid's motors are limited, they can together deliver more than 1200hp, in vehicles with large battery capacity and very high voltages such as Cybertruck and Semi, it is more reasonable to use them in them.
@@Albert69-Correct and that's where the 4680 batteries become the solution. That tech has been a challenge for Tesla but they finally made it in the Ctruck so we will see.
IMO the m3p only needs more top end. It really does lose quite a bit of power after 70mph. It doesn’t need to be plaid fast. Just needs to have a 1/4mile trap speed that suits it’s 0-60. Something like 125-130mph
The Model S doesn't give full power till 70-80MPH. In other words stabbing the accelerating from 50mph feels faster than from a start. In other words more g force from a rolling start between 5-70mph versus from 0mph
@@Cookiebit21 So bored of this tired illogical excuse... Why didn't Porsche add 500 more HPs then considering it costs more than TWICE the price??? Also, you are aware that the Porsche has a lot less space, lot less range, no FSD, no OTA, no charging network, is less safe, etc?
Only if we compare performance in a straight line, but even that not if you do many times in a row. In every other aspect of a car, the Germans win flat out (driving, build quality, brakes, etc.)
@banditbanger13 You sure about that ? Match prices and you'll see nothing can hold a candle to a Plaid with track package.. Taycan Turbo goes well past 2x of the price and can't keep up with the Plaid without track pack on the Nurburgring

I own a late ‘22 Plaid with the track pack and it is absolutely exhilarating to drive, I’ve left Porsche’s, Audi’s, Ferrari’s Mclaren’s etc., in the dust, nothing can keep up with it..
It has 100% torque available at 0 RPMs, so that’s to be expected against gas powered cars who don’t even have half the horsepower. Once the big boys get their R&D together they’ll catch up quickly.
Is it possible the Audi braked the best because it has standard steel brakes and the carbon ceramics on the Tesla and Porsche didn’t perform well wenn wet and cold?

It's funny how carwow won't do a drag race between the Model S Plaid and the Taycan. Wonder if they are afraid to upset the German fanboys. Thanks for the great video!
There is not much point really, as the result is already known. The Taycan beat the Old Model S Performance (Car Wow did this), however it definitely won't beat a Plaid. You need a Rimac Nevera, McMurtry, or a highly modified Mclaren 720s to achieve this. So really this race would just be going through the motions 🤷
That only reason why the launch was even close was because it was wet. The Plaid is traction limited at launch even with dry pavement. I've driven all the VAG variants and bought the Plaid. If you want rip your head off acceleration that is the car to get. Add on the track pack brakes like I did and you have all the bases covered. The Porsche and Taycan may be a bit plusher inside but I dont' really care about that. The S is good enough and just crushes the other cars. Finally a car that where I don't miss riding one of my hyperbikes.
The plaid is still top of the food chain for practical, attainable ev cars for sheer acceleration and it’s been out for some time now but the Porsche is much better looking. The Audi is kind of ugly to me and slow in comparison to the others. Just my opinion.
@@unknownember7889most people don’t buy cars to go 0 to 60 I can guarantee the Audi drives way better, has more tech, more comfy and looks way better than the Tesla, and also doesent have moon sized panel gaps
I don't really like the X% to Y% charge tests. They don't tell you much. For example, one could have an EV with a battery pack half the size of another and it would charge from 5%-80% faster than the larger one. But who cares that it is faster from 5%-80% since it is an apples to oranges comparison. Also one could have an EV with the same size pack as another but that is half as efficient in miles per kWh while driving. So again if it charged 5%-80% faster than the more efficient one that doesn't mean much since it is getting only half the miles out of the same sized pack charging from 5%-80%. I prefer a test that breaks down how many approximate miles of range each EV gets from 20 or 30 minutes of the fastest charging they can take. Then as one extra metric, what their maximum range is on a full charge since that is how you start out on a road trip.
Kinda irrelevant test. What matters is how convenient is each car on a normal roadtrip. Not a contest as only one has an actual practical, working, ubiquitous charging network. Starts with T, ends with esla.

@@Runescapian0wnerwith about 60 liters of fuel, absolutely
It took Tesla only 1 year to surpass the Taycan turbo S since it was launched in 2019, the Plaid has been on the market for +3 years and is still unbeatable (except for a Lucid, but it costs almost three times as much) and Tesla since 2020 There is still room for improvement for the Plaid and without forgetting that the Roadster is in development, Tesla engineers are definitely crazy
It’s not difficult to understand it simply comes down to who has more bhp!
It’s only fast in a straight line
@@logical_lb3059 did you not see the plaid in Nürburgring?
Great video guys - And that Plaid is just absolutely insane, talk about warp speed!
Better than carwow. Well done Rory!
Umm no both good but carwow is the GOAT
Nah
Here in the US, the Plaid is running 9.2s in the 1/4 mile at 150+ mph on public roads. There are vids everywhere on RUclips to confirm it. It'll run that virtually anywhere anytime.

With 20 MPH speed limits in most urban areas, is it really necessary?
I would rather keep my desirable German Audi/Porsche :)
Tesla have no plans in RHD. I cancelled my order and bought a CT turbo S. plenty of power and looks so much better
Nows the time! Tesla killed resale values dropping the MSRP by over 30% recently, so they can be had used for $60k-65k
but that finish line shot... that one captures the how fast these cars are really moving
@@louisolivierfortin $25k more will get you that in the Model S LR. 10.6 @ 129mph easily but they limited the top speed to 144mph which is fine.

You are aware there’s a 300bhp difference??? Shall we give the Porsche 1000bhp and the Tesla 760?
@nickl3434 You do understand that the Porsche Taycan costs 2x of the Plaid and still gives you 300 hp less right? 🤣

Gots to love Merica
Tesla's a beast 💪🏾😎
Is it possible the Audi braked the best because it has standard steel brakes and the carbon ceramics on the Tesla and Porsche didn’t perform well wenn wet and cold?
Its wet, you'd get a different result every time, more importantly Plaid proved itself after outbraking the Chiron
The Audi has ceramics

You should do drag races more often.

The plaid is still top of the food chain for practical, attainable ev cars for sheer acceleration and it’s been out for some time now but the Porsche is much better looking. The Audi is kind of ugly to me and slow in comparison to the others. Just my opinion.

You should have done a 5%-80% battery charge test as well. All cars on fastest public chargers.
