Go find a suitable mate? It’s your channel and all, but, probably not the greatest idea to insult your viewers, even those who stumble across your channel.
A7x lost their drummer, who was a huge fan of Portnoy. They reached out to him to support a leg of their tour while they looked for a permanent replacement. PORTNOY WAS NEVER EXPECTED TO BE THE PERMANENT DRUMMER. From the start He knew, DT knew, and A7x knew he was just a stand-in to fulfill tour dates that had already sold tickets. His departure from A7x was expected from the start, the dates he played were after DT's recently completed tour, so nobody was out of sorts at that point. The drama happened when DT got together to begin discussion on their next album when Portnoy dropped the idea of taking a break, as a band.
And the present shows, MP was right that DT needed a hiatus. He felt that their passion had been gone, but for the others, DT was obviously less about passion and instead much more about earning money...
His time in Avenged Sevenfold was not for money at all. It was for the respect he had for their drummer who tragically passed away because they reached out for him to fill for the tour. He was also still a member of DT at the time of playing with A7X, which is when he decided to leave DT. Which was because he wanted to pursue other musical paths/interests and he didn't only want to be known as the drummer of Dream Theater during his entire playing career.

From what ive noticed in playing with friends and family as a hobbyist. People seem to take for granted how important it is to play with and not at people. I was reminded of this point again when you mention how Portnoy goes to a strait forward feel when the singer is on. Its something I've always tried to live by as a musician. Its more fun to play with people when you check your ego at the door. It also helps with improv too. Keeping it simple may not seem impressive but when playing for the music what youre doing needs to fit. One doesn't always need to be a show off.
The thing is, he was invited to play with Avenged sevenfold. They asked him to fill in while they looked for someone else, and because Jimmy was also a huge fan of Mike portnoy. He also credited Mike for a lot of his style that he used as a drummer.

Just saw them again and every time I see them there are more females there and more into the music. We took my buddies 11 year old daughter and she had a blast.
Funny part is Portnoy is literally self taught. None of them finished school. He also spent his whole life touring and even admits he doesnt practice any technique or has the time. Sound check is the only time they practiced and even then it was jamming out ideas. Everything you see is just him, what he picked up or made his own over the years. I mean it speaks volumes for Mikes ability considering even Peart had to go on for 6 months to relearn his technique after30 years. Mike doesn’t even consider himself the most technical in his technique. Its just so much of who he is that is comes out in his playing. His musical instinct is makes him so great to watch. He plays certain parts different every night. He knows the music inside and out so improv keeps it new and fun.
Portnoy was playing with Transatlantic, a symphonic progressive rock band. You should check out video of him playing with them. I'd love to see you review some of the classic progressive bands who, in my opinion, had the best drummers other than those playing in jazz and fusion. Especially would like to see you review: Early Yes footage with Bill Bruford drumming King Crimson with Bill Bruford drumming Genesis with Phil Collins drumming Emerson, Lake, and Palmer Gentle Giant, with John Weathers
You should take a look at a prog drummer from the band Leprous named Baard Kolstad. His demonstration of a song called Moon is incredible. Was interested to see your take on him.
@X E I think Leprous' last couple of records have been insanely boring and I wish they'd change course entirely, but Baard's performances are consistently spirited imo. His YT drum playthroughs always bring to light just how much attention to detail and care he puts into every song. I don't think any drummer who watches him is going to not think he's very good at what he does.
@@JunkdrummerTV they did, but not for the reason you claimed. Not sure why you're arguing when there's like a dozen people familiar with DT and the situation at the time all saying that the Avenged Sevenfold deal was not why he was kicked from the band. Him wanting the band to go on hiatus (not because their schedule clashed with Avenged Sevenfold's or anything) and DT refusing to put the band on break was well publicized at the time and has been discussed at length since then.
Hey, if you don't know Portnoy is also in a DOPE side project called Sons Of Apollo. Not sure if they are still together, but the album they put out is awesome.
He was only in a7x for one album to help the band since their drummer (The Rev) passed away and he since he is an amazing drummer he was the drummer for the one album, that was all.
People love to shit on Portnoy, but he's one of the greats. Not just because of his chops (which are excellent), but because of the way he used those chops to create and perform memorable music. He put the fun and rock and roll into the whole prog metal thing and his drum parts on those classic Dream Theater albums are a joy to listen to. PS: After reading this comment section I'm surprised you didn't put Dream Theater in your "most annoying fanbases" video. Lol.
Mike Portnoy has extensive work with Neal Morse. In the studio and tour with Neal Morse, and transatlantic. I wish you picked an earlier video from 93. Mike would stand and see fans so during the course of a concert mike would throw sticks to people during his set. Dream theater is a great instrumental band. They always were a great instrumental band even when they we looking for a frontman. Dream theater never finished at Berkeley. A lot of drummers play be feel and not technically.
Very interesting break down of Mike.. It's funny how you make him seem normal.. When he's a exceptional drummer.. Growing up as a kid. My hero's were for sure stu Copeland and cozy Powell. And my first teacher at school always made me study buddy rich.. It's not a bad thing to see it from all directions.. Too video..you have my sub squire..
As always, appreciate your perspective especially on what Mike likely went through when he left DT. I am headed to see them for my 6th time in November for the 20th anniversary of Metropolis Pt2 and I will attest that most of the ladies that are there are doing a favor to the companion... my wife included. Loved the genre traverse of licks explained. Something many likely don’t pick up on. But... now that Portnoy has been covered, I’d love to hear your thoughts on Mike Mangini (new guy for DT). His style fits the band in my opinion but his style and technique are regimented like clockwork. He’s likely OCD drummer of the year but talent and knowledge of time signatures is probably unparalleled. Keep them coming. 🤘🏻😜🤘🏻
I enjoyed this video. But why did you say that MP doesn't have a gig anymore? Last time I checked, he's playing with Flying Colors, Trans Atlantic, Sons of Apollo, The Winery Dogs, Neal Morse Band... I'd say he's staying quite busy.
Portnoy is a game-changer! Just watch DT after he left, nothing inspiring. He only does bands, projects that he is passionate about. Should be therefore a big inspiration for all those who do a boring 9 to 5 job! Portnoy therefore makes THE difference, no matter where or which style he plays...
Not related, but I loved how the keyboard solo at the end was changed. It used to sound great, but as soon as I heard it , I thought "Oh that's Jordan Rudess for y'all!" I feel like he really made that part his own and I think it sounds an awful lot better. Love this guy.
I saw them live in 2007, at the Nokia theater (at the time) in Grand Prairie, Tx. I can tell you that from my standpoint, the guitar and drums were prominent, almost like an earthquake. Very powerful band to see live. And funny that you mention "Van Halen" backstage pass, I am a HUGE Van Halen fan and saw them twice, but from what I have seen, they only let hot ladies backstage. But I did go backstage to Dream Theater in 2007, and coincidentally, Mike Portnoy was definitely the coolest member and the most excited to see his fans. And this is coming from a guitarist. Portnoy is (thankfully) playing with Petrucci and Rudess again in their newest "Liquid Tension Experiment 3" album. Reacting to that would be cool too. Thanks!
That whole story about why portnot left is completely false. They were about to start recording Thier next album when portnoy told them he wanted the band to go on hiatus. They didn’t like it so he eventually left. Separately a7x reaches out to mike portnoy when they lost their drummer. This is completely separate event from him leaving the band. Mike portnoy then changed his mind and wanted to rejoin Dream Theater but they rejected him because they had already found a new drummer
Geoff tate was the best operatic Male vocalist by far with James you either love him or hate him personally I like him because I'm accustomed to that style of singing
great video! Mike Portnoy is a Long Island kid, represent! Not to sound redundant but Blake Richardson, Between the Buried and Me..prog metal..odd time signatures, polyrhythms, etc.. the dude is mind blowing
Yeah. That sounds about right. My 15 year old student learned it on his own over about 6 months without telling me. He then surprised me with it and all I had to do was go in with him and clean little sections here and there. And was a very proud moment for me.
Mike Mangini is every bit as technical as Portnoy, the difference is that Portnoy is super-crisp. Or as a drummer friend of mine once said, "hit the skins with confidence"
I think cuz you reviewed Brooks when he was in bad religion ....I believe it would be super cool if you reviewed there current drummer Jamie miller he is definitely somebody who brings out every Era of Badreligion . Plus He is fun to watch simular to ther second drummer pete finstone
Love all your videos! Please find the time to react to Mike Bordin of Faith No More. I'd love to know what you think of his drumming. He's always been just under the radar, but he's a fantastic drummer. And I love the fact that his kit is set up right-handed but plays the high-hat with his left hand.
“Until Nirvana came along...“ That's when I got totally into Prog, Metal, Zappa, even Jazz, because I couldn't stand all these grunge douchebags and their lack of musicality. Saved my young life through that horrible decade. Anyway, nowadays I am also a gigging and teaching drummer. DT was definitely a good influence.
Maybe you can do one on Mike's son Max. Monster Metal drummer!!! Mike says that Max does lots of things he can't do, but you can hear some of Mike in his playing. Max is like the death metal version of his dad with more blast beats, and speed.
@@JunkdrummerTV Definitely look up Max Portnoy's new band Tallah. That is more extreme metal. I'm not sure if he is still with his Prog band Next To None!!!! Mike produced their first album A Light In the Dark. They have a 2nd album that is more mature and heavy. A good video to check out is Next To None's The Apple. It starts with Max's first drum intro that reminds me of Judas Priest's Painkiiller. Hope you enjoy!!! You can also see Max just like his dad doing a video where each of them play name that tune on a Hello Kitty toy drumkit!!! Its hilarious!!! Especially Mike!!!

Especially would like to see you review:
Early Yes footage with Bill Bruford drumming
King Crimson with Bill Bruford drumming
Genesis with Phil Collins drumming
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Gentle Giant, with John Weathers
Mike Portnoy = Drum God!
You should take a look at a prog drummer from the band Leprous named Baard Kolstad. His demonstration of a song called Moon is incredible. Was interested to see your take on him.
@X E it's because he's real good. hth
That is not why mike left Dream Theater. Mike wanted the band to take a little break, the other guys did not want to. So they parted ways.
They fired him.
Im glad you cleared all that up!
Hey, if you don't know Portnoy is also in a DOPE side project called Sons Of Apollo. Not sure if they are still together, but the album they put out is awesome.
awesome commentary! this will go far
*plays basic double bass* Coach: “that right there, is the ACBC of double bass”
Lol.
You’re very wrong sir Mike plays in “Sons of Apollo” since 2017 so check your info before making sorry statements!
I said he's a sideman. I never said he wasn't without a gig. That dude will never be without a gig
"I was a big prog nerd til Nirvana came along"
🤣🤣😳
Portnoy is a game-changer! Just watch DT after he left, nothing inspiring.
He only does bands, projects that he is passionate about. Should be therefore a big inspiration for all those who do a boring 9 to 5 job!
Portnoy therefore makes THE difference, no matter where or which style he plays...
The Neal Morse Band is amazing!
I'm glad you cleared all that up
If you think Portnoy´s kit is huge, you should check out the kit of DT´s current drummer, Mike Mangini. Looks like a car.
My Idol Super Drummer Mike Pirnoy
Geoff tate was the best operatic Male vocalist by far with James you either love him or hate him personally I like him because I'm accustomed to that style of singing
To my knowledge his leaving of Dream Theater was separate from him joining A7X. And I’m pretty sure he knew he was only doing that one album and tour.
I wanna see you react to Chris Coleman. One of his solos/ and all of you, or fight
great video! Mike Portnoy is a Long Island kid, represent! Not to sound redundant but Blake Richardson, Between the Buried and Me..prog metal..odd time signatures, polyrhythms, etc.. the dude is mind blowing
I swear. He's coming up. I'm trying to find a video of his that won't get copyright claimed. Please be patient with me!!
Check out Meshuggah's Bleed drums, dude does hertas basically the whole song, with he's feet ;P
Images and words is 🔥
James Byron genius
Nice reaction video. First time watching you. I believe dance of eternity is something like 106 time changes 🤓🤪
Yeah. That sounds about right. My 15 year old student learned it on his own over about 6 months without telling me. He then surprised me with it and all I had to do was go in with him and clean little sections here and there. And was a very proud moment for me.
You are great to watch! Underrated teacher!
Thank you!!!
If you listen to Mike Portnoy interview is as I have he's always said he was a rock drummer trapped in a prog band
Also, you're wrong about the fill. It's sixtuplets, four in the hands and two in the feet. Maybe watch a few of his drumming videos?
It's why I said "I think" it's this particular fill. My point was here is an example of foot and hand combination fills.
I’ve been to several Dream Theater concerts. I sat/stood next to a chick at the most recent and she was REALLY into the band!
I recommend the drummer of the band 'The Clutch' his name is Jean-Paul Gaster.
I've hung out with Jean- Paul before. He's a sweetheart.
Junkdrummer TV 🤟!
I'll have to post that picture to the community. I had hair then.
Junkdrummer TV 😂
Mike Portnoy Hello Kitty drum kit is the biz 🥁
Mike Mangini is every bit as technical as Portnoy, the difference is that Portnoy is super-crisp. Or as a drummer friend of mine once said, "hit the skins with confidence"
"I was a big prog nerd, til Nirvana came along." Music history in a nutshell.
I think so too
Images and words came out 2 years after the nirvana album
Need to check out Bleed by Mashuggah the drum cam video!
I think cuz you reviewed Brooks when he was in bad religion ....I believe it would be super cool if you reviewed there current drummer Jamie miller he is definitely somebody who brings out every Era of Badreligion . Plus He is fun to watch simular to ther second drummer pete finstone
Mike Portnoy is in Sons of apollo
Mike Lee from Barren Cross (Rock for the King)
Love all your videos! Please find the time to react to Mike Bordin of Faith No More. I'd love to know what you think of his drumming. He's always been just under the radar, but he's a fantastic drummer. And I love the fact that his kit is set up right-handed but plays the high-hat with his left hand.
I've seen Dream Theater live twice. Plenty of women that both show, including my wife, who's a Dream Theater fan herself. :-)
I didn't know this
@@JunkdrummerTV
Definitely look up Max Portnoy's new band Tallah.
It was like Run to the Hills without it being so; I do see a lot of Iron Maiden stuff in modern Prog music that goes heavier. I listen to ALL music.
Did I hear you correctly when you said "pretty much everything we seen today was in 4/4"?
Scott Rockenfield Queensryche..
If not absolutely one of my biggest influences as a drummer starting in mid 80’s! So underrated! Appreciate your shout out
Just love your accent!! And im from Sweden! ;-)
THE AX7 GUYS GOT MIKE TO FINISH RECORDING IN THE STUDIO CAUSE THE REV PASSED WHILSTE THEY WERE TRACKING THE RECORD....PLAYING WISE AX7 ASKED HIM TO KEEP THE REV'S ORIGINAL KICK DRUM PATTERNS BUT LET HIM ADD HIS OWN FLAVOR TO EVERYTHING ELSE...IM A NEW SUB AND UR EXPLAINATIONS ARE THE CLEAREST MOST SUCCINCT OF ALL THE DRUM TEACHER REACTS VIDS...KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK....PEACE FROM THE NORTHEAST...
Thomas Lejon of Andromeda and A.C.T. Great drummer.
Dude check out Anthony Barone’s playthrough of Gravsinger from his band shadow of intent! The dude is solid!
I have alwats had a softspot for Steve Smith (Journey), and his work with Victor Wooten(?). Its way more Jazz. I guarantee tou know of him, so I would very much like to hear you talk a littttle about him (Not in Journet) Thanks for a great channnel, Hi from Norway
That wasn't it. He was just trying to help after the revs death
See pinned comment
I would love to hear Bruce Dickinson with Dream Theater...

'Standing up to see if there are any girls... There aren't'
Good video! 👍
Did he just said A7X is bigger band than DT lol
He did
If you can read music well and can afford the tuition, you can get into Berklee. It's not like Juilliard.
I'm curious to hear what you'd have to say about Matt Halpern and Periphery
I second this.
Will be you cool to see you react to his playing in something like Liquid Tension Experiment.
I should explicitly state that this was a joke- since his LTE playing is very similar to this song.
I was gonna watch this but as soon as he started getting facts completely wrong & sounded like he was hating on Mike Portnoy I quickly decided this one isn't for me
Oki dokie. Have a great day and please stay safe!
Bigger check is 7fold? I'm kinda shocked. I'm not bullshiting. I've been a DT fan for 24 years. I can't see DT getting a lower check. And Mike reavilng the band for a check? U out a ur mind?
When he was with 7 fold they were on the charts and selling out arenas. Dream theater has never been that big. Just look at album sales.
What is your thought on Keith Moon.
Geoff Tate and his operatic voice says hello
Man, this is annoying. Never, and I mean Never, did mike leave dream theater for a "bigger paycheck" he wanted a years break from touring and recording. They said no, and he left. then he wanted to return and they said no Please do your homework.
Are you better after all that? Was that a moment for you?
@@JunkdrummerTV Is it that wrong to correct someone when they're wrong? He just needed a break from the cycle. A moment, Please.
