I’ve started watercolor again during the pandemic and am so happy to find your channel Karen. Your style is exactly what I like! I now have to paint something every day. I see colors in my sleep and the way I look at shadows and light has changed. Thank you so much for giving us these tutorials.
Thank you so much Cindy! Really pleased you found my channel and like my style! Yay! Once you start painting regularly it really does change the way you see things in your everyday life! 😊
That was the clearest explanation of how to avoid backruns and muddy colours. Nothing looks worse or is more frustrating and teeth-gnashing inducing to a raw beginner as I am. Thank you. 😊
Thank you very much for your very useful tutorial. I’m a very beginner and almost give up. Finding your tutorial encourages me to try again. Thank you, thank you.
Thank you, thank you Karen. Your channel is absolutely wonderful and inspiring. It's also great to have a supplies list. Your instructions are a great help. In this tutorial I found what I was doing incorrectly with not always letting the watercolor dry thoroughly.
Thank you so much 😊 If you haven’t already and would like to access more exclusive and in-depth tutorials, why not think about joining my Patreon membership. www.patreon.com/karenriceart
Just starting out and your videos are a key reason why I'm not 'bouncing off my new hobby. Thank you. I've always wanted to paint but never believed I could. I'm taking progressive steps forward now to feeding my soul with colour and creativity. 🙏☺️
#4 is going to be a life changer! I tend to end up with muddy colors, especially greens. I think I know why now, thanks to you! I’ll pay more attention to these tips. THANK YOU!
Thank you, Karen. I really like your style of paiting, also all your advices are „pure gold”. Usually, I use watercolour pencils when I need to sketch. 🌻🇵🇱
Thank you, Karen, for your wonderful tutorials and I especially love these dos and don'ts. It has totally helped me to remedy some of the problems I am having with my watercolor painting. And I love that pencil marks can be okay.
Thank you Karen, Being a pro cinematographer for 50 years, I paint with light, composition and color. Thank you for making me see a clear path from my visions to my watercolors.
So pleased you found this helpful Donna! I will put your suggestion in my future tutorials, see what I can come up with. Meantime, checkout the member's video for waves splashing on the rocks:ruclips.net/video/l06FksshbXo/видео.html. I hope you enjoy it :)
Great tips. I'm glad you covered pencil marks. I'm not a fan of them except in certain situations, so I appreciate the tip about that and the others as well.
Very enlightening. As a beginner, not knowing why something is happening, this is very helpful. I have made these mistakes, especially the backrun ones.
Thank you so much Karen, your tutorials are wonderful and your type of art is what I love, loose flowers , abstract and would never ever thought that I would like landscape for me, you make art possible for absolute beginners like myself- being an absolute beginner,a non sketcher a non everything. An 86yr old who still makes her Xmas cards was the inspiration for my creativeness to search for me in that world…I made a couple of cards but I wanted something more organic to create those cards and bookmarks to give to family and friends - watercolour is what I chose, whimsical watercolour with doodling, abstract and Loose wc flowers ….I keep a notebook of all of the areas of watercolour that interest along with a wishlist 😊 I have watched several of your videos and am so grateful for your generosity to share these also as tutorials….watching, following and enjoying….with ❤ from New Zealand 🥝
Greetings Mary from New Zealand, really pleased you’re enjoying the tutorials. You are so right. Watercolour is a great medium for painting cards. Thank you so much for sharing :-)
So pleased you found this tutorial helpful Maggie, it is so important to know why things are happening and how we can correct or avoid them! Happy painting :)
Thank you so much for these tips, very helpful and I appreciate the time you took to share with us. I really enjoy watching you paint, you’ve shown me tips and tricks I never even thought about. Such as, using a plastic card for any number of of details and using a twig for crisp lines. Thank you!❣️
Thank you Karen. I really needed this as I've been struggling with back runs and 'cauliflowers' on some of my work. I didn't know you could paint another layer on top of dry work. There's hope for me yet!
Brilliant tips and good reminders of tricks I had forgotten. I started using a heat tool for drying (I think they are for crafting) - way less turbulent air and actually hotter, so quicker too 😁
Great tutorial Karen Thankyou. To remove excess pencil I use a kneadable eraser and roll it across my drawing. It’s lifts it very well without disturbing the paper, and evenly.
Thank you so much Karen, I have learnt a lot and it has made it clear why I get back runs and 'cauliflowers' sometimes. As a beginner to watercolour, I am learning such a lot from your videos, so thanks again :-)
Thank you, the drying of your painting was especially helpful cause it explains why I get a lot of my muddy colours. I use a putty eraser when drawing , I find it’s kinder to the watercolour paper, and as I find drawing difficult it gets used a lot . 🙂
Thank you, Karen. This tutorial was so helpful! I am so impatient and have often started painting when the first layer isn't dry and I have had those disappointing results. I just love watching you and learn so much! I am going to check out your cornflower video now because that is exactly the kind of thing I would like to do. I have photographed so many flowers and fields with the thought in mind to use these photos as inspiration to paint from --- but now I have to learn the proper steps for painting them and when to do the background first or whether I can add a loose sort of blurred depth of field by adding the background afterward.
Thank you so much for your comment Jean! So pleased you found this tutorial helpful, especially the importance of allowing your painting to dry!! I hope you enjoy painting the cornflowers, they were so much fun to paint! Happy painting :)
This was very helpful to this beginner! You’re a great teacher. I love the sunflower painting on the wall behind you. Did you paint it? I’d love a tutorials like that on a smaller scale. Beautiful! ❤️
Great tips, thank you. I wonder if blowing wet paint would work when painting rain? You know when you look in the distance and you can see that dark rain cloud and rain falling beneath it. So much to learn. 🙂
Omygosh, Thank you so much for these tips!! Could you show us how to paint a light pink tulip or flower with a hint of darker pink at the tip. My "white" part of the pink tulip melds into solid pink...in other words, how to paint white or very light parts of something without using white paint.
Thank you for your understandable tutorials. My question is how do you prepare your watercolor paper and what weight paper do you us? Mine is buckling.
Hi Peggy, I use 300gsm paper and buy blocks which help with warping. Hope this was helpful. Check out this tutorial which may help further:ruclips.net/video/DtI8-cRcUDU/видео.html
Thank you Bobbie! Here is the link the the trio waterpot. You can also buy it on Amazon UK: www.jacksonsart.com/jas-stackable-water-pot-trio?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=51ef186e18dc00c2d31982567235c559. Also one of my student managed to make her own waterpot using a due yogurt container! :) 1d
Really helpful, thank you. Can you tell me what your 'framing tape' is? I've only found the gummed stuff which won't come off to leave a nice white border.
Thank you Katherine, so pleased you found it helpful. I use framing tape, which is like masking tape, so you can remove it easily for a nice white border. Here are some links: Framing Tape: amzn.to/2QamvmT (US) amzn.to/2wNYo6z (UK). I hope this was helpful :)
The longer sunflower tutorial was an exclusive tutorial for my members. I will however be doing a card making tutorial soon, where I will include a little sunflower. I hope you enjoy it :)
Just to let you know with almost all of the Daniel Smith water colors the pencil marks underneath can be erased except for a yellow & a red. You could call them to find out which ones they are. I know this becuz I live in Seattle, Washington USA which is where their company is. I've gone to their H2O color workshops with their teachers who have explained this.
Practice makes perfect 😊 I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial. For more exclusive and in-depth tutorials why not think about joining my Patreon membership. www.patreon.com/karenriceart

Hi Betsy, I bought them from John Lewis :)
You are so talented and I love your style. Where did you get the wee water containers?? So cute
Thank you so much! I bought them from Jackson’s art supplies.

I use a putty eraser when drawing , I find it’s kinder to the watercolour paper, and as I find drawing difficult it gets used a lot . 🙂
So pleased you found this helpful Kim, it really does make such a difference waiting for the painting to completely dry! Your paintings are lovely! :)
I use winsor newton paints. What colors would you recommend to a beginner to paint these flowers 💐 😍 thank you for sharing with us 😊
Thank you for your question. I would use Ultramarine, Cad Yellow and Permanent Rose 🌹

Oh that's nice thank you 😃
Just one thing to clear, when you say 300 grams, do you mean weight or thickness (gsm)
Yes 😊
Show 👍🏻
Super!
