  • In anticipation of getting the Analogue Pocket Adapter Set I've been checking out the retro game stores around Portland Oregon to see what they got. I’ve been on the hunt for NeoGeo Pocket, GameGear and Atari Lynx games, I’ve already got a stack of PC-engine HuCard games to try!
    In this video, 8bitjoystick reviews the Analogue Pocket Adapter Set and hunts for retro games around Portland, Oregon!
    Review:
    - The Adapter Set lets you play TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine, Neo Geo Pocket, and Atari Lynx games on your Analogue Pocket.
    - High-quality build with transparent shells.
    - Plays games from any region and supports flashcards.
    - New Analogue OS 2.2 adds cores for all three systems.
    - Plenty of screen mode options, including CRT filters for TurboGrafx.
    - Memory Saves for TurboGrafx and Atari Lynx, but not Neo Geo Pocket (hopefully coming in a future update).
    - Button limitations for some TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine games (especially 6-button fighters like Street Fighter II Dash).
    Overall, a great upgrade for Analogue Pocket owners to increase the variety of retro games they can play.
    Portable Game Hunt:
    - 8bitjoystick visits retro game stores in Portland and Vancouver looking for Neo Geo Pocket, Game Gear, and Atari Lynx games.
    - Stores include: Tappers Retro Games and Toys, Retro Game Trader, SideQuest Games, Double Jump Games, Final Form, and Flip Flop Games.
    Is the Adapter Set worth it?
    - Yes, if you already own an Analogue Pocket and want to play more retro games on it.
    - Yes, if you have a collection of TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine, Neo Geo Pocket, or Atari Lynx games.
    Be sure to watch the video to see 8bitjoystick's full review and game hunting adventure!

      Thanks. I made the game hunting part first, and then made the review as soon as I got the adapter set

      @@8bitjoystick I can tell because you had the games already. That was a lot of effort to go through. You must be sick of driving. 😂

      I actually filmed those shopping trips over like 2 weeks. I didn't do it all in one day.
      Yeah I realize I had some continuity issues where I showed you some games before I showed that I bought them but whatever

      4:50 Correction: the “Street Fighter fighting game craze” hit in the very early 90s, not the late 90s.

    Thanks for the review! Did you test Neo Turf Masters on NGPC? There are early reports the game freezes after the title screen.

      I don't have a copy of that game yet. If I did I totally would test it.

    Dam, look at all those Turbografx games. I need to live on the west coast.

      Before today I don't actually own any TurboGrafx games. The ones that I have are all PC-Engine that I got directly from Japan, way cheaper.
      But yeah despite all the various issues I still love Portland Oregon

      I owned an original Turbo GrafX-16 back in the early 90's and it was my favorite 16 Bit system.
      Yes, I owned a SNES and Genesis too and all of them were great.
      One of the best generations for gaming.

      Well you are in luck because there are a ton of awesome game systems out there that were not quite as popular but are still a ton of fun.
      I'm almost envious of people who have never played PC-Engine/Turbografx-16. Because you have an opportunity to discover them all for the first time. A freaking lot of awesome game and goodness.

    I wish shipping wasn't so expensive on these to Europe! with shipping and import fees it's crazy

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  3 месяца назад

      I actually like the Evercade which is a British product and so I have the same problem in the exact opposite direction. Usually there is an import surcharge or a mark-up for me to get it from resellers because I can't get it directly from the company.
      But yes, it really gets me that the cost of me shipping it from California was $30 when it was a small and light box and it was almost a third of the cost of the adapter set. That's over twice the normal price for shipping. I can't imagine what it would be to ship around the world.

      If you are in the UK there is actually no import fees because Analogue are supposed to add VAT on anything under £135 and import fees are only charged on orders £135 and over. So I never got charged tax at either end and got them for £122 all in

    The important question for me is can you remap the a and b buttons accordingly so you hit the bottom button for jump and the right button for attack. The way it was mapped on the said console?

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  22 дня назад

      What console are you talking about? When you are playing a game on console you can not remap buttons but many of the OpenFPGA cores DO let you remap buttons

    • @StereoJoe
      @StereoJoe 22 дня назад

      All consoles except the gameboy an and GBA I know you can remap the buttons, but I don't think you can for the other consoles with carts anyways?

    Could you help me, the game gear adapter works, but the lynx, ngp and pc engine adapter, when I put it on, it appears that it does not support the adapters, how do I support it? Do you have any updates?

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  2 месяца назад +1

      I would guess that you need to update the firmware on your Analogue Pocket. They updated the software right before shipping the adapters. I would get a MicroSD card and add it to your pocket if you have not done so. This also lets you use Memory Save States and Open FPGA. www.analogue.co/support/pocket/firmware

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  2 месяца назад +1

      The latest firmware updates instruct the Pocket how to make FPGA cores to run the Lynx NGPC and PC Engine
      Another option is to get a MicroSD card and install the PUPDATE software on it and run the program on your computer and it will install all the updates and set up all the available OpenFPGA core. It is SOO much easier than trying to do it yourself and they will even install all the arcade game files you need to play them.

      @@8bitjoystick thanks! I think I'm going to do this on a new micro SD card, so there's no risk of losing my backup. Do I have to format the micro SD? Or just download the files to them?

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  2 месяца назад +2

      I wouldn't use a new card. Just use the microSD card that you're currently using.
      Just make sure that you follow the instructions
      Pocket
      Prerequisites: A micro SD card, formatted to FAT32 or ExFat.
      Download the firmware file you wish to install.
      Place the firmware file on the root of a micro SD Card. Ensure that no other firmware files are on the micro SD card
      Power your Pocket off fully.
      Insert the micro SD Card into your Pocket’s micro SD Card slot.
      Power your Pocket on. Pocket will automatically begin to update. Pocket will display a progress update bar on the screen while updating.
      The update process takes between 3-4 minutes. Do not power off Pocket during this process or disturb the unit in any way.
      When Pocket is finished updating, it will auto re-boot.
      Your Pocket is now updated.

      Well, I'm confident that you could probably find someone who wanted the turboGrafx adapter. A lot more people seem excited about TG-16/PCE than NeoGeo Pocket and Atari Lynx, but I'm actually super stoked about those ones.

      I mean at a glance it looks like one of those form letters that kids get when they write a letter to the White House but it was heavily redacted so it's totally about Metal Gear. Also, we haven't had any walking nuclear capable giant robot tanks been hijacked by terrorists since his administration so thanks Obama.
