How many times have we heard of somebody scouting for game before hunting season alone and unarmed, running into trouble with bears? It seems to be a recurring theme.
Go with one other person and go with bear spray and firearms.

It's actually laughable how the average person thinks bear attacks are rare. Meanwhile there are millions of them (combine polar bear, black and brown bears) and other than us have no natural predators (in Asia only the tiger may mess with a brown bear if desperate enough)..... Always be armed around them though they are an amazing animal. Can't trust them nor can you underestimate them

Chris is lucky he could get that knife out in time. Why would he even choose the camera flash first? And why did they not find those cubs? Out there all alone. I think if everyone in that area already knew that there were Grizzly's in the fields, he should also have known. If you are a hunter, you first know the area you are hunting in. Number one safety rule. He did not do his homework beforehand. Makes him so very lucky to be alive.

And then He had the quick thinking and Sense's that He was Able too First fully thrust & plunge His Hunting Knife 🗡️🔪 in Fully too the Hilt. Not just Once. But Three Full time's, in a matter of a few Scant Moment's when She Charged Him. For Chris too do Such miraculous thing's? Was really n Truely Remarkable, and extremely Brave as well.

This is the exception to the rule... 'Don't bring a knife to a bear fight'.. :p. IF that is all Ihad I would use it just same as Chris did.. I know over history man has killed bruins a time or two with a knife, though they usually died as well... I just cannot get over why so many avid hunters, especially those living up in the area, refuse to protect themselves PROPERLY... The only way you are going to be able to do that is with a sidearm or rifle.. Some of these instances I want to laugh about (even though they are not funny) because the 'predator becomes the pray'... Animals are on guard almost 24/7, especially predators.. Humans seem to think we can go out looking for signs / glassing for animals in their home and since it isn't hunting season, nothing bad will happen...

I haven't heard anyone talking about Alberta for years until watching this channel. My dad's family had a bunch of friends around Fort Macleod who'd visit back and forth. As the older folks passed on both groups grew apart and lost contact. A couple were truckers so they always had stories. Most were farmers and liked guns but as I recall they were more concerned about rattlesnakes. Beautiful scenery with the mountains as a backdrop.

Addicus, in your outro you say,
“Be careful out there, especially in Bear Country!” Reminds me of my time as a cop with El Paso PD. In my patrol district in NE El Paso, there were many topless bars, right outside the boundaries of Fort Bliss. The lonely, horny young GIs, awash in beer, fueled by hormones, were frequently involved in bar fights, desperately seeking attention from the nearly-naked girls, pole-dancers each and every one. So, I would caution our gentle readers to “be careful out there, especially in…Bare Country!”

After this encounter he still wants to go back; dont understand why some people wouldn't learned. They go into bear territory, and in some incidence get injured or killer, and cause these bear to be put down.

Does anyone think that the population of grizzlies has recovered enough that there may be an overpopulation now? I mean the numbers are very high and you would never catch me anywhere near bear country but I just hope there aren't any bears in Ohio.

    • @jameshickok2349
      @jameshickok2349 10 месяцев назад

Yes. Add wolves and coyotes to the over-population list. We've been increasing in cougar sighting and contacts the past 25 years. A couple towns south of us along the Missouri River had cougars come into residential areas and didn't seem eager to leave so they were shot. Trail cameras and household security cameras are really waking people up to what's going on around their homes or farms.
Until last week I thought the nearest deer from my house was 1 mile. Then my wife showed me camera footage of the deer parade walking past our front door and one deer in a next door neighbor's yard. They seem to go by around 0500 to 0530 hrs just before the area wakes up. My only concern is coyotes and cougars being drawn into the neighborhood.

Black bears in Ohio were considered extirpated in the mid 1800's, from habitat loss & unregulated hunting, but are making a come back, particularly in the wooded areas of the east and southeast. They disperse from & wander into Ohio from PA, WV and KY. Sightings are increasing every year.
There's not many places, if any in the lower 48 & Alaska that are 100% free from black bears. They don't look at maps, and when a neighboring state has a large population, often young males will wander into areas with less black bears to establish their own territories. They also wander far and wide in search of food. I wouldn't assume any suitably wooded area with resources they need, is black bear free. No matter what others might say.
You can always look it up with the Dept of Natural resources or your state game commission for more information. Black bears can be anywhere their nose leads them. It pays to be prepared in black bear country.
That said, there's no reason to freak out and live in fear. They've been sighted for years now in Ohio. I would've said they were there before I looked it up just because I know neighboring states have them, why wouldn't they be there ?
I've lived most of my 60 years alongside wooded areas and prime black bear country in PA. I'm alert and carry when I leave the house, but I don't waste any time worrying about what could happen. Every time we get into a car, could be our last time. More ppl are killed by dogs, horses and cows than any wild animals. When your time is up, it's up. I want to live my life living, not worrying when my last day will be.
I prefer rural areas any day over a city. It's peaceful, beautiful and for the most part animals make better neighbors than people do. Animals do what they do to survive and pass on their genes, protect their young and keep the species going.
It's never too late to learn how to handle tools needed to defend yourseIves. 2 legged predators concern me a lot more than 4 legged ones, tbh.

I don't understand why he didn't back away slowly. Mom's with her cubs, then they spot each other suddenly. Instead of raising his arms and making loud noises, which would put any mother bear in the defence to offense to protect her cubs. I really believe she would have allowed him to back away from her and her family.

Very sad that the sow had to die, and the Cubs probably got killed by another bear. What an unfortunate event. I'm sorry, I don't feel too much empathy for people out there killing things. Unless it's absolutely necessary for survival for them. I'm not saying I wish that Chris had been killed by the bear. I just wish he had been more careful in taking bear spray and possibly would have avoided having to kill the mother bear.

How many people lack the intelligence to compute going into bear country with anything less than a boom stick is a bad idea before people learn their lesson ? A lot more it seems

Chris wasn’t “lucky” in dealing those knife wounds to the bear. He was blessed by God and guardian angels were present for everything to fall into place as it did. I don’t believe in coincidence. Coincidences start happening when we start praying

My problem is that you showed Chris with his bow while out scouting! But then you stated he only had his hunting knife as a weapon, which made the story confusing! Just saying! Still, I love your real life telling of events! 🤔😵👍

Why would you go hunting knowing there’s brown bears and grizzly bears in the vicinity and not take bear spray or a powerful rifle. Bear spray could have prevented the attack and she could’ve raised her cubs. Why do people do things like this? I agree with him defending himself, but he could’ve brought a gun and bear spray and maybe the bear spray would’ve prevented her death.

There have been lonely people that are lonely, children grown up and gone etc. They are obviously not using any logic when allowing bears to feed from their trees, or actually feeding them regularly! The law warns them, sends them tickets etc. and by hesitating to arrest them, make them go before a Judge because they are elderly, they don't get warned firmly, and therefore are brutally killed! Why is this allowed? I don't care how old I get,if predators come around me,or mine, that bear is going to get shot off my porch,no hesitation. I've read, and heard enough. Bears are not magnificent, they are brutal, and nothing more than a big wild dog to me. As many have said, once they lose fear of humans, they become even more bold! We have to make them fear us,whatever it takes! They aren't capable of compassion, do not ever feel sorry for them. They roam around attacking whatever they want, would the Feds investigate if humans are killed? Not in most circumstances! They are protected, doesn't look like they are endangered to me. Apparently there are too many encroaching on our land, homes, etc. They are killing machines, and they eat you alive , we're hearing about more maulings, and horrific deaths more often! I say "Eat more Bear meat!" I personally would love to shoot one that was stalking me! These attacks must be stopped! Do whatever you have to, to stop them from preying on people. Dawn from Michigan

I always feel so bad and such pain for people who go through these attacks but at the same time the more of them I hear about were the bear is also injured or killed I feel so horrible for the animal too for just doing what it's supposed to do. Human and bear interactions in the wild really need to be minimized because all this death is pointless. Nobody eats the bear that's killed and very seldomly just a bear eat the person that's killed, it's just a waste.

If the mama bear had only turned around and walked away, she and her cubs would have been safe. She chose to charge, giving Chris no option but to defend himself. Maybe Chris should not have yelled and waved his hands in the air-could this have been interpreted as a threat to the bear?

What a ridiculous comment. The bear attacked him first. Self defense is always righteous, and bear spray is nowhere close to 100% effective against a charging brown bear.

Have bear spray anytime you are in bear country. Firearms also should be a given part of your gear. And why do so many people go alone when doing this kind of stuff in dangerous territory. You all have family to think about too, so if you won’t protect yourself for yourself, do it for your family. Just imagine the suffering that you being eaten by a bear or other predator will instill in your family, your wife, your children.
