Seems like a surprised protective sow reacting in a predictable fashion. Since it wasn't made clear in the details, I am wondering if the noise of the river covered up any sound that would have given advanced warning to the bear that humans were nearby. Having bear spray is good, but as in this case, there is not always time to employ it. Same can be said for a firearm. IMO, a must have in the forest is a fixed blade knife, with at least a 5" blade, affixed to your hip. It's the last line of defense in a worst case scenario.

I had a very strange encounter, I was backpacking in the upper peninsula of Michigan, I was alone with a six month old female Irish setter. After setting up my camp, a long comes a pair of bear cubs followed by their mother!
My setter chased the cubs towards me with the mother in hot pursuit, the cubs raced up a very tall pine with the mother croyuched at the base of the tree. My setter would bark and look lunge at the show and the sow would take a swipe at the dog, the dog would pull back just in time. There was no one within twelve miles, this show went on so long, all parties grew tired and eventually the dog backed off, the cubs came down and the bears shuffled off. They did not return during the night,

If you lived alone in the woods in Bear country, without neighbours or 'The Authorities ' to help, and with Bear numbers at pre human influenced levels, im pretty sure you would hunt every last one untill you had a decent buffer, making you the dominant predator. The Bears will know who's on top, and you could perhaps hang your washing on the line and tend the garden, without having an armed escort, safety off, ready to defend. Its no joke, everyone accepting Bear in their community and advocating their free roaming near human habitation, should be sent on a, Catch The Baby Bear Hunt, with a lasoo, arnt they cute.

    Defensive attack.
The attack could not have been avoided, whether they stood or not.
At eight feet away, he would have had to have been Wyatt Earp to draw and fire, and unless he was firing a 12 ga with slugs, he would not have had a chance to stop the bear. Evan, a 12 gauge with slugs, is no assurance of a one-shot kill.
I'm sure they felt safe; however, I'd fault the local ranger for not posting the area.
    Lora's survival:
James yelled at the bear as soon as possible after the first knockdown
James tells Lora to get in the river
James sprints towards Lora after almost growing
James caused the bear to lose interest in Lora and went to find her cubs

    Hi Atticus,
I’m sorry to say but I’m still missing some photos from around the 8th. I tried to go back and pinpoint which video but I can’t.
Can you let me know what I’m doing wrong?

Very true. Also the spray lasts three years so check on the underside of the can. The spray does not diminish but the potency of the irritants does.

While sunbathing, wonder what they were wearing, wonder if bears communicate with sharks. Shark attacks are on the rise, but its been blamed on what ocean swimmers are wearing, overweight tourists in Speedos. The sharks say enough is enough, lookin' like bears saying the same thing.

It definitely was a defensive attack that's just Mom's way of saying don't mess with my cubs that's what makes sow grizzlies so very dangerous they don't give you a chance to hurt their cubs they have two options fight or flight if they smell you or hear you they may choose to avoid you but if they walk up on you or you walk up on them it scares theme and they go into a rage they just want to eliminate the threat. A firearm definitely would have had a different outcome ether the grizzly would have died protecting her cubs or she would have gotten shot and been in even more of a rage and really thought the people was a bigger threat and ripped theme apart. Thank God the people was not really hurt and the bear wasn't killed. When we go into bear county being hurt or killed is the chance we take if it's a mother looking out for her cubs or even a hungry bear that hunts a person down is just part of nature if you don't want to get eaten by a bear don't wonder so far into the forest and if you don't want to get eaten by a shark stay out of the ocean

I have one question? Why do people go into bear country where bears belong and sun bathe on a river bank? Even fishing is questionable enough, you should always be aware and very conscious when top predators’ domain. Do people not respect these top North American predators before they suffer an attack of some level?
This was an ambush because these people were sun bathing like they were poolside. Sun bathing poolside vs in bear country is quite different to me. Sure, I feel pain for the couple.
For example, why do people get into really small kayaks or dinghy like craft while traveling the Zambezi River filled with hippos, large crocodiles and bathing elephants? These dangerous large water animals can easily flip you and have learned human behavior, making them to acclimated and less weary to avoid people. Bears are to acclimated to people now; beware going to bear land with naïve blinders on.

I have responded to many stories like this one and my response is the usually the same. First, the couple was lucky. Two, they should of had a firearm at their sides (both people) at all times plus a hunting knife. I would never be in Grizzly country without a slug gun or a rifle. That rifle would be close to me and my partner would be equally armed at all times. They were are an example how fast the Grizzly bears moves that their bear spray was not effective, The video shows the risks of camping in grizzly country. Ona side note? Is it legal to carry a handgun in Canada when in Grizzly country for protection? I will do some research on the question

The bear spray safety clip should have been checked before leaving and NEVER leave it in your pack.

We cannot carry guns in any of our provincial or national parks. But we can on Crown land. I’ve always carried a rifle on my dogsled trips as well as on canoe trips.

What a strange mentality of the people of the united states that makes them the ones with the largest arsenal of self-defense weapons to protect themselves from other human beings in the world, however when it comes to entering wild territory and even knowing the lethality of their fauna, prefer to go completely unarmed. This behavior is very strange, worthy of a deep psychiatric analysis.
Here are some theories: 1.- Have recent generations been greatly influenced by Disney, making them believe that animals act reasonably?
2.- Is there some type of hidden trauma from living in a system with so much violence that you need to cleanse your conscience by surrendering to the judgment of nature?
3.- Simple ignorance of the real world for believing that everything can be solved by calling 911 and with a checkbook?
4.- Do they have such an exaggerated sense of superiority that it makes them believe they are above nature?
5.- Are their lives so empty that they need an extreme experience to have something interesting to tell their grandchildren?
    6.- All of the above.

Well, I think it’s a combination of those things. As an American myself and gun owner, history has taught us that our own kind will harm us more than anything else.
Being able to defend yourself is your natural born right, whether it was with a club, a spear, a sword and shield, bow or in our case nowadays, a gun.
I also do think people are blind from the dangers animals pose because of Disney, and living in cities their whole lives. I manage a camp in the mountains, you’d be surprised how terrified people are that we have black bears, and have no idea what to do if confronted by one. Especially in California 😅

Im a born and raised Albertan and know my province very well. The eastern edge of the Canadian Rocky's is our home and we share it with a few apex predators including the mighty Grizzly! My buddy just took a photo of a huge sow just standing on the side of the road without a care in the world! She was a beauty but could probably eat your vehicle! lol In the 80's, tourists visiting Banff were getting mauled by bears every year! Bottom line is this, if a Grizzly wants to eat you it will and there's nothing you can do about it! Only luck and an angel on your shoulder will prevent you from being bear food. Timothy Treadwell's girlfriend couldn't stop that Grizzly from eating Timmy for the main and her for desert!

    This attack happened so quickly.
All bear attacks happen so quickly
. Bears can / do move at 40mph ; I know I was driving at 40-45 mph & a black bear was running by my right front fender , I slowed slightly & I crossed in front of me !
Someone said you need a 44mag revolver, sorry a lot people can’t handle the recoil , & second shot recovery is way behind that of an auto loader. Even People who are proficient with revolvers have proven that they can handle a 10mm better , get more shots on target & do it quicker. Hunters in Alaska have switched to the 10.
Shots in rapid succession do not allow recovery time . My cousin , while grouse hunting came on a black bear at 50’ , standing up, it’s back against a tree , & catching some sun rays , he emptied his Mossberg 22 , 16 shot repeater into its chest , it never moved the whole time & then made one jump pilling up dead !
Bears have an incredible sense of smell, she new the people were there before she ever saw them . The problem was the cubs had wondered close, Mom’s always give a sound to their cubs that tells them ,- Get out of here - & momma had to drive away any possible threat

I dont know if its because the state i live in which is Kentucky that its rare to hear of a bear attack even though there's thousands of big black bear here up to five hundred pounds , or maybe its because we can pack heavy ordinance when hiking or hunting , fishing , here its life and property you have the right to kill if need be in a serious or self defense situation, but it absolutely blows my mind people think a can of pepper spray is gonna stop a bear , why why why does humans go in an area knowing there's dangerous or in my words a monster just waiting to kill anything and eat what it comes across , pepper spray is like using salt to spice up food , thats exactly what Pepper spray does it seasons a human being for bear bow come on people wake up , but my father always said there's always somebody who's willing to be long headed meaning ignorance, why why why go camping and hiking without heavy ordinance, and if they don't allow it just don't go its that easy ......
