    As an American, I always considered eggs as an ordinary staple in the the kitchen. To hear Yeonmi describe eggs as a luxury food is greatly humbling. I am grateful that you shared your story and helped me see from your perspective. I think, moving forward, I will be more considerate of my blessings.

      In spite of the problems we experience as Americans, much of it is "first world" issues. I was homeless before, but even then I was able to recieve food using my states SNAP system. In fact the amount I recieved each month was too much for me and I always left behind around $50 or more. When I finally was able to get housing, and informed them I didn't need it anymore, they told me to use up what was left behind to fill up my fridge. It wasn't great being homeless, but even so there are people in the world that don't.get the kind of support we have in the US.

      Yes, eggs are a staple food in America. You can be poor and still afford to buy eggs, or raise a chicken for the eggs. When I was growing up, my mother raised a few chickens in the backyard. They gave us enough eggs for the whole family, so we did not have to shop for them every week. This is impossible in a strict communist dictatorship like North Korea, because the people there aren't allowed to own any chickens. All of the good meats for the leaders, and only the wild animals left for the people to eat. I'm thankful we can have our own stuff here.

    "In North Korea you are not as valuable as a cow." Wow that's a powerful statement!

    • @moondog7694
      @moondog7694 4 года назад +8

      It's an inaccurate statement. It's not that North Koreans value cows over humans. It's that they don't want just one person to hoard/hog one cow, preventing other humans from partaking. They want to ration the cows as carefully as possible, making sure that the most valuable members of their society (the high-up officials in the inner circle) get the best nutrition possible. So a more accurate statement would be that North Korea values multiple high-ranking, professionally-employed humans over a single low-skill blue-collar worker. That seems reasonable to me, given the environment they're in.

      @@moondog7694 If they want to have more cows and better nutrition, they should allow cows and bulls to fuck, get a little baby cow, have it grow up and repeat. All the while the previous ones can continue putting out more cows. So can the new ones. In the meantime, they can chomp on the grass on the ground so people don't have to work to keep the grass down. And they don't have to get fed beyond that either. Free labour, free meat, free work done.
      Basics.
      I don't see the problem. I especially don't see anything reasonable about their current practices. If it was about getting the higher ups the best nutrition possible, they wouldn't be limiting the people. That's why it is not about getting the best for the higher ups, it is about keeping the people down. Even if the higher ups also don't get the best.
