I was traveling from Italy to Slovakia last summer as a member of the U.S. Junior National Team in canoe slalom with a Slovak coach who was coaching Team Kazakhstan. The Kazakhs were borrowing the coach's black Mercedes van and needed it to drive their boats and luggage to Milan airport, so I had to ride with them to Milan. Riding around Italy in a black Mercedes van with a bunch of Kazakhs who (mostly) couldn't speak English seemed really sketchy at the time. Now that Peter has documented how people will hitch rides with strangers everywhere across Almaty without second thought, I completely understand why the Kazakh team was willing to let some American stranger hitch a ride with them on his way to Slovakia. We even swapped Team USA and Team Kazakhstan shirts as a mark of mutual respect. I fail to recall meeting a friendlier group of people than the Kazakhs, and they are a significant reason why I now want to travel to Kazakhstan in the near future.
Since I live in Sweden, I usually go by car to Ukraine for vacation. Last year, however, I was looking for cheap flights to Kyiv and "discovered" that hey - Almaty looks affordable. A city I mainly remembered from watching ice skating on TV as a child. So I went. And apart from getting ripped off in a classic tourist taxi scam, I can corroborate what Peter says here about Almaty. I felt pretty safe, and Almaty is a nice city to stroll around in. And even go up as high as 3200+ meters above sea level nearby. If I go again, I'll probably rent a car to go outside the city. Let's just hope for a democratic development in this beautiful country some day in the future.
Frank, there are many beautiful places like mountain lakes, for example Qolsay and Koyandy lakes, also Charyn river and the big Charyn canyon, waterfalls, apple and apricot trees which smell so amazing when they ripen, not so far from Almaty. Depends from the season, at the spring or early summer flowers are blossoming like at the Alpine meadows. As Peter said the country is huge, it means many different climate zones, different landscapes, so the idea to rent a car is very good to explore the most beautiful places of the country.

I was trying to find some info about interesting places and facts about Kazakhstan as I wanna go for a car trip on vacation. A lot of my colleagues say don't go there. But what do they understand?! I spent 6 months studying abroad in Kazakhstan. I took a year of Russian before going although a large percentage of people (especially younger people) spoke english. It was in many ways very different from the USA but I also found that people are similar everywhere. I loved my time there and hope to return one day. KZ is a very unique country that is mostly unknown in the US.
😂 most countries are unknown to Americans! Joking! Sorry!😄 and by Americans I only mean from the USA, because yes, you do not have the monopoly of America. 😉

It's so funny that some people would think and believe that Kazakhstan is what was shown in Borat movie (there is so much information about any country around the web). I have watched the movie several times and find it hilarious. I definitely wouldn't recommend to watch the movie in any other language than original as one might get the wrong idea. Hi Peter, thanks for your video. I lived in Almaty for a couple of years and I can verify all you say is true. Thanks for letting people know. Almaty really is a great, quite modern city and the people are very friendly and open. The highlight for me is the spectacularly beautiful big mountains (up to 5000 metres high) so close by with skiing, climbing, hiking etc. The city itself can be a bit hot in the middle of summer (and a bit polluted in winter with all the coal fired central heating plants) but beautiful parks and fountains everywhere. Highly recommended!

Great video, absolutely love it! Borat has definitely had a negative impact on how the country is viewed and many people in Kazakhstan really dislike it for that. I’m pretty sure it was actually banned in Kazakhstan for a certain period of time! Personally, I dislike it, but it is after all just a comedic movie that isn’t supposed to be taken seriously, only ever meant to point out the fact that Westerners are willing to believe anything at this point. Pity the movie had to prove that point through Kazakhstan, though. On the topic of ‘stan’ I find it hilarious and sad at the same time that it is grouped with Afghanistan and other such places. Someone once asked me where I’m from and upon responding “Kazakhstan” they immediately say “oh I’m so sorry for what’s happening in your country”. Please, we aren’t Afghanistan!
The Romanians in the village where he filmed weren't very impressed either. They tried to take legal action against him too. Mr Cohen likes to push his humour to the limits. He was nearly lynched in the US.

I did that sort of hitchiking in Kyiv some 10 years ago, it was quite common actually. I guess uber and the likes sort of made that practise less common.

well you could use Yandex and Uber so problem with a rip off is solved. And those taxi drivers are usually immigrants from neighboring countries.

The highlight for me is the spectacularly beautiful big mountains (up to 5000 metres high) so close by with skiing, climbing, hiking etc. The city itself can be a bit hot in the middle of summer (and a bit polluted in winter with all the coal fired central heating plants) but beautiful parks and fountains everywhere. Highly recommended!

Great video, absolutely love it! Borat has definitely had a negative impact on how the country is viewed and many people in Kazakhstan really dislike it for that. I’m pretty sure it was actually banned in Kazakhstan for a certain period of time! Personally, I dislike it, but it is after all just a comedic movie that isn’t supposed to be taken seriously, only ever meant to point out the fact that Westerners are willing to believe anything at this point. Pity the movie had to prove that point through Kazakhstan, though.
On the topic of ‘stan’ I find it hilarious and sad at the same time that it is grouped with Afghanistan and other such places. Someone once asked me where I’m from and upon responding “Kazakhstan” they immediately say “oh I’m so sorry for what’s happening in your country”. Please, we aren’t Afghanistan!
The Romanians in the village where he filmed weren't very impressed either. They tried to take legal action against him too.
Mr Cohen likes to push his humour to the limits. He was nearly lynched in the US.
