Meaning he is making the choice to actively not help himself. Meaning he doesn't want to get off drugs. Thanks for your insights. I quit giving money a few years back. One time I was in Chicago and I had a left over deep dish Pizza and I thought it would be nice to give left overs to a homeless person. He said thank you. About two hours later, I ran into the same guy again and he asked me for money "for food". I said "Didn't I already give you a left over Pizza?" He said, "Yeah but I gave that to my friends'. I have noticed that most homeless people will not take food when you offer it to them, they just want money. Totally not people who are doing everything they can to better themselves. I donate money, but I have found that by giving money to beggars I am just enabling.

A former homeless beggar said she worried about people spitting or worse in the food. Which is why she didn't accept food when her sign read, "will work for food". In the past, I've offered pre-packaged food like homeless advocates suggest, but no one wants that. Had one particularly pestering guy, my boss gave him cash too often, who tried to hit me up as a soft touch too. When I mentioned food kitchens nearby he'd grunt and say he didn't like what they were serving or tell me I should try it out. I felt how ungrateful can a guy be? I'm eating spaghetti and homemade bread tonight so I can stretch my food budget and this guy's trying to pick and chose where to eat.

I've live in the richest area of Tennessee since May 2018, and almost every time I get off interstate 65 on the bypass, I see tge same guy with a sign that says 'Lost job, lost truck, lost home, family needs a miracle'. He is clearly healthy enough to do this. A lady who has lived close to me for 12 years says she seen that same man with the same story for the whole 12 years and doesn't know how many years he has done this. He'll have his dog there and sometimes I see him with expensive shoes. One day he cut me off in a new Dodge Demon that is about $90,000 or maybe more. I couldn't believe the beggar had a car like that. He got mad at me for taking a picture of him and his sign and was really rude to me the next few times I drive through to my hard earned residence. In Mexico there are a lot of homeless people trying to sell stuff like the women and child typically sell handmade bracelets, candies, chips, or some sort of toy. They double the price than from what they brought it. Ex: a small bag of chips that costs $1 and they sell it for $1.50 or $2:00 (well in pesos) And you can see where their little tents are where them and their children sleep.
My parents tell me to not give people holding up a sign begging for help.
The only time my parents gave money to a person holding up a sign was because she was really old and well at her age she should not be even working.
There is another “homeless” guy that holds up a sigh asking for help.
My mother went to the bank he was there.
My mom asked the lady that was helping him and she said “don’t tell anyone but, he has his own good bank account with some good money to pay rent” ( something like that)
So holding up a sign asking for money was his “job”
If anyone read all of that you are a legend!

It’s not whether they’re homeless, it’s the fact that people in general are begging and panhandling. Homelessness is a waaaay larger situation, in comparison to street beggars. Street beggars give homeless people a bad reputation because there are definitely tons of people without homes who are completely clean, good human beings. The problem is that it’s intimidating to be expected to work in order to obtain anything in life. Some people just aren’t made to work, let alone get far in life. I think a solution would be to inform larger masses of people on why we shouldn’t be giving our money away to strangers. It’s never a good idea.

When I was student I was sooo very poor I was nearly homeless but you know a person without friends without anybody is a warning sign and there is reason he is there, alone, begging. Also the psychology of "beggarism" is that people in this case beggers who are given money WILL NEVER stop sitting there! You actually help them maintain this LIFESTYLE.

There is a difference between those who are poor/homeless and those who are just looking for a free handout. Yes Jesus wants us to help those who are weak. But ask yourself is giving money to them helping them? Rather how about you give your money to outreach programs? How about giving your time/energy to giving them a ride to a place they need to travel to? Or what about giving them food/time to listen to them and their problems. Money is not going to solve their problems, its going to make it worse. How would you feel if you gave a homeless person 50 bucks and he went out and got drugs and overdosed? You were the one who enabled that... You didnt help him at all. Be charitable but smart with your money.

I'm currently in an in between spot in life. My entire 20s I was a single mom to a severely disabled child. I was a devout Christian and gave too much. I also took my dad in with no help other than the help I hired so I could continue to work at my sons school. I did my best to stay off the govts dime though there were times when I did need foodstamps for emergencies. But I tried my best. Now my son is with his father and I have two other kids and married to a soldier. Im conflicted on whether I'm too harsh about this principle. Like today, the reason I came to this video was because a single mom with 3 kids went on a buy sell group on fb asking for food for the next 10 days. I asked if shed went to food banks and got emergency food stamps first and she said the food bank didn't give enough and that they would take out what extra they give her in foodstamps from her next payment. I told her yes because it's not supposed to be a handout, just a temporary fix. This prompted backlash from her and another woman calling me judgemental. My thing is, at least exhaust all other resources before you go asking individual strangers if you're truly in need. That's what they're there for

I had my 1st encounter with a supposed panhandler in 2006 who had a fairly decent (groomed with a nice jacket) appearance & I can't decide whether it was right or wrong to give him $5.00 (he claimed he was out of gas).
But I never gave anyone anything since (after my Dad said to me "A lot of these guys are just lowlifes looking for free handouts") + I try not to make eye contact or enter/exit a parking lot where panhandlers with signs are standing.
Twice earlier this year, I encountered a guy in 2 separate towns (& 2 separate counties) who tried asking me for money, but I gave him none.
1st excuse he used was he was homeless & hungry which was during the 1st encounter, but I managed to get away.
The 2nd encounter was when I was leaving the gym in the evening.
That same guy came up to me again, claiming his car ran out of gas in a nearby Dairy Queen parking lot & he asked if I could give him a ride.
I declined to give him a ride since I don't trust strangers (even his claims of being a good honest Christian weren't enough to persuade me), especially people like him (I'll explain why in a bit), but I offered to go to the nearby Wal-Mart & get a gas container & buy him gas at a nearby station (he was to go back to his car to wait for me).
This was a trick my Grandpa once taught to my younger brother & I when he told us that someone came up to him once asking for $0.10 to get a cup of coffee, which my Grandpa offered to buy for him, but the guy wanted money (so obviously, this guy was most likely either a druggie or a boozehound).
But the guy declined & then he asked if I could go to the ATM in the plaza & get some money out for him, which I lied & told him I don't go to that bank, but then he said "You can still take money out".
I told him I was running late for a meeting & he was like "Please, can't you do it?" & after I implied no again, he was like (with more of a tone) "(sigh) PLEASE, can't you do it? Come on, it'll only take you a few minutes. Help me! I'm having a bad day! I have a daughter at home!"
Then I quickly got in my car & then he swore at me, so I thought (pardon my language) "Piss on him. He can go fuck himself" & I drove off.
Anyway, I later found out this guy's an aggressive panhandler who's well known throughout my section of the state I live in who goes from town to town between 2 counties & often manages to avoid police (will hightail it if he knows they're coming), but I heard he has been caught & arrested several times (thanks to the idiotic bail reform, he doesn't stay in lockup).
There's at least 1 whole Facebook page dedicated to this guy (like people post his whereabouts as a warning to others if they encounter him) + some local radio shows have talked about (& people have called in) about the guy which supposedly triggered a relative of the panhandler.
People have shared this relative's post stating that her brother is not only a drug addict, but is also mentally ill + she is pissed that people talk about beating up or even shooting the guy & fears she'll 1 day get a call saying that her brother, the panhandler is dead (OD or murdered most likely).
I'm aware some of these people have tragic pasts, but I still refuse to cater to these sob stories & even so much as give them a penny for their thoughts as I don't know which ones are real needy & which ones are just scam artists looking to pay for their next bottle of booze or bag of marijuana.
I admit, I joked about giving this guy (the local aggressive panhandler) an envelope full of play money (not Monopoly money, but play money you can get at grocery stores, dollar stores or mini marts), but I wouldn't actually do it.
Also, I guess people have suggested he get a job, but he prefers to panhandle, stating he makes more money in a day than some do in a week + he doesn't have to pay taxes.
I donate a dollar when stores run charity donations & I give some small change in the Salvation Army bins, but that's about it.

The only type of homeless ppl I give money to are either extremely old ppl or physically/mentally crippled ppl, who are literally physically/mentally unable to work.
The rest of those homeless ppl who are still very young with perfectly healthy and capable bodies and minds, YES I DO AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY should work towards finding a minimum wage job. Contrary to popular belief, not all companies require you to dress like a millionaire to do well in an interview and land a job.
Companies like goodwill, Amazon, manufacturing companies, warehousing companies. They literally don't care what you wear (as long as you are wearing SOMETHING to cover up your stank-ass body) because physical appearance does not matter as you will never deal with outsiders, they only care if you can do the job.
Besides. Once you get a job and you're first paycheck, you can clean yourself afterwards.
You see, when we keep giving them money, whether they be a disgusting alcoholic or smoker or weeder, when we keep giving money they will think "OH HEY. I DON'T FUCKING NEED A JOB! I LITERALLY GET MONEY FOR FREE FROM DONATIONS EVERYDAY! I'M SET FOR LIFE!"
So SAY NO TO GIVING ABLE-BODIED HOMELESS PPL MONEY! That way, it will FORCE their lazy bitch ass to find work, otherwise they will un-sadly literally starve to death.

Anya Tindall I think that, I KNOW it. Short of severe mental illness a majority of the homeless can’t be bothered to work because it doesn’t fit their lifestyle and I’ve been a addict and
I hung with quite few homeless.
A job doesn’t understand that the local drug dealer just told you he “has fire”(good drugs) so you have to leave.
A job won’t understand you need a beer RIGHT NOW a job isn’t going to understand those things and while these homeless are suffering from mental illness, chemical dependency, and/or other issues .... for most working a honest job isn’t something they have interest in sure they would like to earn the money but for many getting there on time, behaving as expected and just fulfilling the roll needed is something many can’t do and a lot of that comes down to the very reason they’re homeless.
And I’ve known homeless who work but they don’t stay homeless very long , they can stay in shelter because they’re behavior hasn’t got them kicked out ... but the average day after day running the streets and panhandling type of homeless generally have no interest in a job.

Before I was able to use my discernment I would get hustled left and right, by gypsies, so called homeless people and etc.
I know first hand what it’s like being homeless, I was homeless back in 2019. But I never fixed my lips to hold up no sign or go begging anyone for anything. I got up, stood up on my own two feet and made something happen. Now I’ll always give food or buy food and water for anyone that’s law, but giving money, yeah no! Couple minutes later the 2nd and the 3rd person where chatting and scanning all people walking by and it was almost like the 3rd person knew from the 2nd person that there was nothing to gain. The first person did not ask for anything else than cigarettes while he needed the most after hearing the story where he came from and why he in the city where I live. Just now I went for a job interview which went well, extremely well (I just got the job, actually). I stopped in a grocery store for some medium cheddar and a bag of chips for a chicken sandwich with a breast. I've been planning to make today. I picked up 2 for $8, 200g Reese's Pieces With Peanut just because. I love those. Woman sitting at the exit intersection light, looking down, I rolled down the window, said "hey...." and gave her a bag. She went "aww, thank you... :)" which kind of made me feel good tbh. Its not money, it might not even be a big deal as far as nourisment but I made me feel good and probably her too. I've done that with Cliff Bars at a grocery store for a guy standing outside the don't I think I gave him a pack of cigarettes too.

Starting this video I thought there was going to be no way we agree on this topic but after hearing your reasoning, it makes more sense than the other way of Thinking

Well judge sorry my friend. I am a homeless building inspector, not a con, use no drugs and have lost almost everything I have. Because of a work injury I worked 20 years missed 3 days. But I follow the judge not less you be judged. I gave money away to hundreds of people in Mexico and the U.S. I have no regrets. Also when someone offers to buy me something to eat I always except.

Donating to kids in India seems to me also like black hole. I am kind of person who donates to science and believes that if science make progress in society, everyone will get better even the poor ones.
There needs to be balance. Maybe compare Elon Musk. He is pro science and pouring all the money to advance technology. Mark Zuckenberg would rather cure disease in Africa. Both are valid. I prefer Musk way.

In before titles on PC blogs "John Sonmez the hater of fat people, beggars and kittens". All jokes aside, how do you know that your money goes to people in need? Even with research you can't be sure unless you visit those people frequently. Is that system also based on trust or is there some assurance that those people are really getting your money?

I agree with u on thinking twice before approaching a homeless person however what most of us don't know is a homeless person needs your time more than your cash. Yes it's a good idea to giveaway your cash to someone who works his ass off under the sun because as you said they sure can use that money.
Just giving away your money to a homeless person wont help them at all because it is just a quick fix and it might encourage them in a wrong way so next time you approach a homeless person I highly suggest to donate some of your time first, ask him about his story and talk to him and remind him this wont really help him and it will be just a quick fix then go on and donate some cash if you feel like.
By doing this you know that you have done your part and the rest is up to them.

Been struggling with this as well and I know that a lot of the people in my community I live on the border of a really literally great town and then if you go about 2 miles down the road and cross the railroad tracks it’s a really not so great part of town. I happen to work in the hospital and that part of town that’s not so great we see the same people begging on the street corners that we see coming in and out of the emergency rooms in on our hospital drug overdose heroin overdose they might not even have clothes to put on to get home when the clothes are being ripped off by the EMS people because they have overdosed and falling out of the bus stop completely unconscious and unresponsive so will gather up money to get them clothes and then they’ll be back in emergency room that night overdosing on something. So they find money somehow.

Saw a lady with her boyfriend and two kids in the social grant line at the store. On their way out after receiving their grant money, they stopped at the cigarette counter. They barely have two coins to rub together but still smoke. I mean really there are much better things to spend your handout on. Like food. I would say contraceptives as well, but people can get that for Free where I come from. They smoke drink and procreate, but heck, how about some work???

Twenty dollar bill? You sure are steep under the hypothetical circumstance of feeding the homeless. I don't support beggars myself, but I surely would not give more than one buck. Money does not grow on trees nor fall from the sky like rain. Being stingy and miserly is a better course of life.

When you seem like you’re the type of person that works hard and does good for yourself these homeless guys and crackheads going to think you got money, you’re a target. I always tell them no, life isn’t about handouts you gotta work.
