The truth is, as dominant as the Chinese players look on this chart, China is even more dominant if you consider that international tournaments only have a limited number of spots per country. China only gives the opportunity to travel to their top 2-3 players (Ma Long, Zhang Jike, etc.), but there are many, many other players in China that play near that top level.
If all Chinese players are allowed to enter international tournaments, they will probably get 14 out of the top 16 spots every time. It's a known fact that the singles gold at the Chinese National Games is the most difficult title in TT. Zhang Jike, one of the most decorated players on international level, never managed to get in top 4 in men's single his four or five attempts at the Chinese National Games. There are just so many player at the similar level. That's also why Ma Long is the GOAT with his two wins in men's single in Chinese Games. Only player in the history of China to ever do so.
The coach of the Chinese team once said that compared with the Olympic Games and the International Open, the training of the Chinese team is more competitive. Participating in the Olympics is more like relaxing the mood of the players and relieving the pressure.

you need to know the rank of table tennis means nothing compare to tennis or other major sport. China has huge amounts of top level players in reserve, who have very little chance to play in the big events (due to the limitation of number of player single country can send), hence they don't have high ranks.
The reason why Timo can be the champion at 2018because ITTF don’t want Chinese player dominate the ranking and set limitation to them . And at the same time , the Chinese player dissatisfied the demotion of liu guo lian and quit the match
@@Alnivol666 Yeah but only a limited amount of players from same country can play in a tournament, so all Chinese players cannot compete to leave place to europeans and else
@@milkeyekokuto8820 That's a good argument for olympic participation where only two per nation can play in single tournament. But have you seen how much chinese players can play in the same ITTF tournament? For example: 15 Chinese male players participated in the recent ITTF Challenge Plus, Portugal Open. After the round of 16, only 5 Chinese players were left, and only in one match, two chinese played in the same match against each other. So Chinese players are in fact not able to dominate the ranking completely, because they have not enough top tier players. It is as easy as it is.
Timo Boll looking like the greatest of all time here. At least as far as longevity. Ma Lin and Ma Long probably were the most dominant. Harimoto is the future, though.
Moah Moulin That seems inaccurate considering Wang Liqin, Ma Lin, Timo Boll, Vladimir Samsanov, Chuang Chih-Yuang and Joo Se Hyuk were all consistently ranked in the top 10 into their 30s, let alone past 28.

Damn Ma Lin was such a god back in the early 2000's, it's a shame that the PH grip isn't as popular now, and less experimentation and improvements are being made on it. China seems to have moved on fully to the shake hand, mostly because of Ma Long's domination against the other Chinese players. Xu Xin has seemed like the closest to getting anywhere near Wang Hao or Ma Lin's levels but he's just not consistent enough. Really hoping for a talented Japanese or S Korean PH grip player to make top 3 in the coming years, and maybe revitalise the PH grip scene.
Xu Xin is more than capable at 1st ranking but he has too much fun with points that winning isnt everything to him anymore. He had a ridiculously good career why go all out when you can have fun? FZD may be top rank but he also sometimes gets angry (with the floor mostly), I don't think I have ever seen Xu Xin angry, dominance isn't everything, but it sure is a lot.

towards the end you can see the very beginning of fan zhendongs dominance to the rankings. What we have seen so far of FZD being top is the tip of the iceberg to later years based on his improvement and age so far!
you need to know the rank of table tennis means nothing compare to tennis or other major sport. China has huge amounts of top level players in reserve, who have very little chance to play in the big events (due to the limitation of number of player single country can send), hence they don't have high ranks.
I’m just curious about how these beautiful infographics animations are made.
great work!
I love ma lin's playstyle so much
me too.
Really well done
The reason why Timo can be the champion at 2018because ITTF don’t want Chinese player dominate the ranking and set limitation to them . And at the same time , the Chinese player dissatisfied the demotion of liu guo lian and quit the match
But I still think timo is strong
What limitations? They want to be in the ITTF rankings, they have to play ITTF tournaments. That is how it works in every sport.
@@Alnivol666 Yeah but only a limited amount of players from same country can play in a tournament, so all Chinese players cannot compete to leave place to europeans and else
The new ranking system is bullshit.
Fantastic video, I could watch this all day.
Timo Boll looking like the greatest of all time here. At least as far as longevity. Ma Lin and Ma Long probably were the most dominant. Harimoto is the future, though.
Just amazing that Ma is back on top!
non-Chinese players: why do I hear boss music?
Nice video!
no data before 2000...
but still amazing work
Loved this!
Timo Boll holding it down for the rest of the world lmao
whats the yoyo guy doin here??
@@limegagliano Serously wtf
I don't really know much about table tennis. I just follow tennis and I'm curios, when do table tennis players start to decline and retire?
28 years old plus are rare among the top 10 but some like Timo Boll or Vladimir Samsonov are keeping it up
The top 10 has players from 15 to 43 years old. Mostly retire in their mid 30s
R u that dumb. Who doesn't know that u attention seeking piece of junk
Its basically the same as tennis.
Respect to my European players, giving some diversity to the table tennis tournaments
Do you really think there are only 4 Chinese players in the top 10 if every Chinese player get the same opportunity to attend international tournaments.?
The moment when you need 2 glorious player to play duo championship, but you have 4 😔
Wow, great. You did an Awesome Job.
Do one on "Is China's Dominance in Olympic Weightlifting Real?"
Hey guys,
which tool do u use to make this type of videos?
I would like to know
Ma long is the best of the history
¿Jan Ove Waldener?
@@arielpena9109 sry, but its true. Waldner is the first but not the best.
What about zhang jike
Jan Ove Waldner: "Am I a joke to you?"
Yes, I love this guy, watching his match always make me comfortable :)
I don't know much about table tennis, although I'm from china and i like it. I just knew the Players Deng Yaping, Ma Long, kong linghui, Zhang Jike, Liu Guoliang, Boll. I respect Boll. As we all know, there are the best atmosphere for the table tennis Players in china. Under this background he could be no.1, furthermore as "an old man" he can play so well, he is respectful.
波尔老妖,越老越妖。希望他还能再坚持两届奥运会,续写自己的传奇
Short answer: yes
4:30 even the music matched with Zhang Jike's vanish
This is a great overview! I really enjoyed it watching :D
What do you use for data visualization?
this doesn't actually reflect real strength because the ittf rankings take too many other things into consideration. lots of players in china would actually have made that list if they had the chance to compete on the international stage.
Xu Xin ❤️❤️❤️
Hi,I love your video. Can you tell me how to make this video? What software you used? Many thanks
There was era when big four of table tennis are all chinese. Lol
The era we Chinese called "2 Wang(Wang Liqin, Wang Hao) and 1 Ma(Ma Lin)"
There was a era where 7 out of 10 where chinese...
No one else really plays the game. Not a real surprise
@JimboParadox it's funny how they've gravitated to this game in particular. I suppose it doesn't require a lot of space for one
@@markharrison6498 Nobody else playing? Then why are you here? Lol there are other sports where china dominates too, but it doesn't matter if I mention those sports cause you're gonna say "nobody else plays the game". Excuses excuses excuses
People come and go, but Boll and Samsonov stay 😘😘
The rankings only go back to 2001. Wang Liqin was winning international titles from 1998, and probably would have been number 1, definitely in the top 10 international, by the time Boll won his first German championship.
Thank you. It's a fantastic infography!
