  • A US archaeological team has been scanning the waters for the remains of a pilot whose P-47 fighter aircraft crashed in 1944.
    The French military is helping with the expedition, which began on June 25.
    At 18 meters deep, divers managed to retrieve sediments, which will be analyzed for possible DNA traces at a US laboratory.
    The US Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency has a budget of 154 million US dollars to retrieve remains of 200 missing soldiers worldwide every year.

    OK. Recover them and give them a decent burial, I can see that. The costs seem way too high though.
    Incidentally, which of the two P47D shown had the remains in?. One was a bubble canopy and the other a razorback. Plus the bubble canopy one was only a forward fuselage and center section, the razorback substantially complete considering.

    • @crazybrit-nasafan
      @crazybrit-nasafan 3 года назад +3

      @@MarsFKA I totally agree with you. My referring to the high cost was taken from a logistics point of view. Yes, those men paid the ultimate price, they should be repatriated and have a decent burial for sure. But the budget seem to be much higher than it should be for what is involved. That is all I meant. I know that sometimes it is impossible to bring these heroes home. My great uncle Dryden, killed in Italy WW2. stepped on what was believed to have been an anti tank mine. It went off and all that was found was a small part of one boot. Would it have been worthwhile to hold a funeral for a piece of uniform? I am not too sure but if it were to give a family closure then probably so.

    • @MarsFKA
      @MarsFKA 3 года назад +7

      @@crazybrit-nasafan My father was a tank commander in the 18th Battalion, Armoured Regiment, New Zealand Division in the Italian campaign.
      He said they lost a Sherman and its crew at Casino. The tank brewed up and every round of ammunition inside it exploded - the hatches looked like volcanoes. It was weeks before they could get to the tank - it was on ground exposed to enemy fire - and then they did, all they found of the crew were a few bone fragments.
      They thought it worthwhile giving those few fragments a proper funeral for all five men.
      If you haven't served then do not question the motives, or policies, of those who seek to bring home servicemen and women who died doing their duty.

    • @crazybrit-nasafan
      @crazybrit-nasafan 3 года назад +4

      @@MarsFKA I think you misunderstood me. I am in no way questioning the whys and motivates at all. These Men and Women SHOULD be returned home. Regardless of costs, difficulty and all other considerations. I have the deepest respects for all who have served. And I apologise for the misunderstanding if I did not make myself clear.

    • @bobkozalov8821

      @@MarsFKA Getting near to a million dollars to recover each body. It would be better to give the money out right to family members, some might really need it, or they could take a trip to the area of the final resting place to lay a wreath, say some prayers or toward a memorial. Thousands of men were buried ceremonially at sea or while killed in the line of duty 75 years ago. They should let the fallen be where they lay. Is New Zealand doing anything to repatriate soldier remains from 75 or 105 years ago? There are thousands of marked Zealander graves in Europe, would you like to see those men brought home? I would think that to be the first step, and more worthwhile, in bringing home the fallen than searching for 70 year old DNA in sediment.
