- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- Oxygen sensors are one of the largest contributing sensors to your vehicle's fuel trims. A malfunctioning sensor can cause all kinds of havoc on your engine. In this live webcast we are here to talk about not only how an oxygen sensor works, but also how to test and verify its functionality. We will also be talking about the problems that can cause oxygen sensor failures as well as the problems you can run into when once one has failed.

When people say "look it up on RUclips" they're talking about finding guys like this.
A
C is correct
For sure! This is great!
Him or scannerdanner very good teachers
💯, not everything on YT is cats, or adult children opening toys
For a younger man you are extremely well spoken and fully educated on you source material.
Great Job! Your parents should be so proud of how intelligent you have become
Thanks for watching!
Woaw , Real professional schooling here , the best 1 hour on this subject , I enjoyed the way the information is being conveyed, attitude and dynamics are superb , Thank you Mr. Becker and Fritz !! 👏👏
Hey Ernest, thanks so much! Glad to hear you've enjoyed the video :)
~Mike
I want to thank you for releasing these videos. Yes they're long, but it's an education on how these things work. Not some quick fix. Very, very valuable information.
Hey Pear CD, thanks for watching! Yes, they do get pretty lengthy, but good training can not be done quickly all the time. My goal is to simulate a technician training class with these presentations.
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
ike's confidence and knowledge and preparedness comes through in his presentation. In spades. This all is critical to the viewer/student: if the instructor is "um"ing and "uh"ing, it results in losing the attention of the student.
I've signed up for class notification due to Mike's presentation. He's a class 1 pro!
Sign me "one who used to do training"; it's not easy.
Hey Daveccc0000 thanks!!! I really appreciate the kind words :)
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Dude you miss your calling as a teacher you're absolutely amazing thank you so much you saved me a lot of money and frustration
I'm five years late to the party here but, brilliant and informative video. Cheers!
Hi Alickskid,
Thanks for the kind words and checking out the video!
~Ryan
has anyone ever taken the time to tell you how valuable your videos are for us
Wow, thank you! That means a lot to us! Glad we can help :)
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
This is the best video I have seen on O2 (Lambda) sensors. I taught F.A.S.T.(Factory Authorized Suzuki Training) at MM I(Motorcycle Mechanics Institute) 2006~2011.
Even though some of the info is simplified it makes it easier to understand. I would not have been allowed to explain anything that was not approved curriculum but a few students were always interested in how and why things work. The information was much more difficult to find back then (except in technical terms majority wouldn't understand) I'm going to link this on Facebook as several of my former students stay in touch and are still interested in learning 'more'
Hey Peter, thanks! That means a lot to us! Thanks for linking it man. I hope your former students enjoy it as well. Encourage comments if there's any questions. I answer them all myself.
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services Instructor
I'm not a professional tech, but the nerd in me loves info videos like this, and this one was excellent!! Will definitely be checking out other videos. Thanks!
Thanks for watching David! I hope you like our other videos as well. If you have any questions don't hesitate to leave a comment!

1st time watching just did my senior on my 1999 searra truck.
You are teaching me so much.
Hey Iasalle, thanks for watching! :)
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
I count this video among a very short list of highly informative auto tech 'know how 'youtube videos. You guys are awesome for making this public!
Thanks Markus Roby! We really strive to be a part of that "short list." There is too much information out there that isn't trustworthy. Our goal is to put out great tech info that everyone can trust and use in their job everyday!
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Best diagnosis videos out there..Thanks for spending the time and providing knowledge....
Thanks man! Just wish mine had more humor like Eric O's haha
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Not a technician and only really looking at this stuff for an hour or so, and I STILL knew the answer to that O2 sensor trivia question. LOL
Hey Frank, cool! Thanks for watching!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Just changed my upstream O2 sensor on my 1999 Saturn SL. Yes, it’s still running great. I cleaned throttle body, changed plugs and wires, cleaned and re-oiled my K&N air filter plus other parts. The car ran great until it warmed up. Finally my service engine light came on. Took it to Advance Auto and they said O2 sensor code came up. That was actually what i was suspecting. I didn’t have the understanding on how it worked or just how important it is for engine performance. So with a new O2 sensor it runs like a top. I won’t be convinced that everything is working until i take a longer drive and I’ll know. I was wondering why my damn fuel economy went to hell. I was always getting 38mpg on average. This is highway/city average. Highway normally 40+ mpg! I love my old Saturn and will drive it until it dies. Thanks for your informative video!
Finally a video which mentioned Titania sensors! Thanks a lot!
Here's another intelligent question. With an 02 sensor adapter how is it able to trick the PCM to think you still have one??
One of the best videos ever of eletronic fuel systems
Thank you very much Fernando!
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
great video
Hey Mark, thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
You explain things so well. Thank you from South Africa.
Thank you very much Shakari51!
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Use Propane instead of Brake Cleaner. Much safer and doesn't damage your rubber hoses.
Great tip Gary!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
First time @ your video, and love learning about the systems and fixes. At this time was researching sensors because of a "lean code" due to acceleration issue. Knowledge is power. Thank you!
Do I need to disconnect the negative on my battery before changing my up stream Bank 2 sensor 1? This is a 2014 Yukon XL 5.3L V8 SLT.
Hey Chris, naw, it won't matter as long as the ignition is turned off.
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
@@GoTechTraining thanks!
This is what you tube is for in my books. People like this man are awesome, he has a great teaching style. Good job on your course. Looking forward to many more. Subbed
Is this an add for not getting a modern Car.My everyday driver is 60 years old and has one screw to adjust the fuel mix.I don't need to pay two computer mechanics plus parts two day's not to fix it. My car gets 37 mpg.
What kind of car?
That's awesome Jonathan! Killer fuel eco!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Outstanding job guys, I just learned all there is to know about HO2 sensors and fuel trim. Thanks for the lesson. If only i could catch your live broadcast so i could get me one of those awesome t-shirts, too busy during the day. Can't wait for the next broadcast. Thanks again.
Thanks Rags2Wrenchs! I don't think this video has everything you need to know...but it's a good start. So, you mention that you want to watch live. If we were to stream a live broadcast in the evening, say like 7pm central time. Is that something you would watch? We are always searching for new ways to be able to get you guys to watch live! Thanks again!
MIke Becker, Technical Services Instructor
You betcha, I get settled down around 7pm cst so that would be perfect.
We'll see what happens moving forward. If and when it happens to change times I'll inform everyone at least a month ahead of time. Thanks for the info!

1 hr 11 min 'basics'!
I can't imagine what an advanced level EVAP video would be like. At least 8 hours I would guess
I hate evap circuits!
I have learned a lot from this RUclips channel, more than a lot of the other frivolous RUclips videos
I thank u
Thank you very much!

Like Pine Hollow.
Neither A or B
That's correct, well done!
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Awesome clear lecture. Very good and clear illustrations. Thank you!
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the class!
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Neither of the techs are correct. The second sensor is after the 🐈
Why would that prevent it from failing? Disconnect a o2 sensor and tell me you don’t get a constant voltage
This Is a great video class. I’ve paid for classes that are similar in richness of information for different subjects.
D
Hey Saul, that's right. Thanks for watching!
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Greatest indepth on sensors ive ever seen. Thanks a lot. This really helps a lot.
Thanks Lex! Glad you enjoyed the class!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
You're a great teacher, thank you very much! I have a much better understanding of o2 sensors now.
Great video!!! amazing information... I love the fact that it's really specific. I have a degrees in electronics and I'm eager to learn new skills... mostly because I'm broke I can't pay a mechanic to fix my truck...hahaha!!! But at some level I'm glad that my truck it's giving me problem because I really enjoyed to learn all this stuff today...👍👍👍👍
Hey Ed, thanks man! Hope you pick up a bunch of things from the channel. Appreciate the comment!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
1st time viewer right here!! And All I can say is thank you for ALL the info on 02 sensors!👍 Great job now i gotta go work on my car again! Lol.

Thanks PopLaCork!
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Excellent information and presentation, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
D neither.. Very nice video nicely done, nice sound absorbing materials also.. Easily one of the best detailed videos I’ve seen on the subject. Dabbled into this sort of thing way back in late 80,s had my first snap-on scanner early 90,s. I loved and welcomed the multi-port shift away from carbs... However I Leaned more towards the 12volt accessories and such hehe... happy good times.
Hey, that's right! Nice! Thanks for watching!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services Instructor
cool stuff. Very appreciated. I thought a tiny oil leak was innocuous. Just so happened to drip on an o2 sensor . Rear / back . now I understand what my vehicle has been doing for years.. with a half bad / basically slowly failing o2 sensor.
Hey Alex, glad the video helped!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Just found your channel today, love these fuel trim videos! Solid info and very well presented... I'm going to say it, best O2 sensor video ever. Cheers guys.
Hey Scott, first off thanks for watching! That's a great compliment. I'm glad you've found our channel. Let me know what you think of some of our other videos. You should join us for our next live training. We go live July 13th at 11am and 2pm central time. Hope to see you there!
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Thank you for some reasons I need a refresher on o2 sensor as well as other sensors from time to time.
This is so great, to learn here what I would have to pay thousands from a tech school. I know that I need to continue watching more of your tutorials. I am expecting some parts for my 2009 Nissan Rogue S, it has the check engine "nightmare" light very steady I thought I had everything packed down to work on my car, but I will continue your tutorials, so that I can get straight to the problem and not go guessing. Thanks. And the first Q's answer is B.
Thanks for the very kind words Miguel! I am glad you are going to watch more! I must say though, tech school is a great start. No matter how good these classes I make are, they don't beat hands on learning like a tech school can provide.
As for you Nissan, what code are you getting? I'd be happy to help! Test don't guess right?
Thanks for commenting! Actually technician B is not correct. The rear O2 sensor commonly will not switch, it should remain much more steady. The correct answer was Neither tech.
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
The white heater sensor wires can go either way, i missed your live demo as I'm in the UK, but correctly correctly answered to the quiz, would love a t shirt, have now learned how to read long term and short term fuel trims. Regards Pete
Thank you for your time.
Good explanation of O2 sensors... will get back for the rest.. LONG VIDEO!!
Thanks Ron! Yeh, the class is a long one...I had soooo much info I wanted to teach! Hope you enjoy the rest of it. If you have any questions don't hesitate.
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Great Video, Great Presentation, Learned a whole lot !!!!
Thanks Robert! Glad I could help!
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Robert, that is an interesting viewpoint. I agree, if you understand the basics it makes the more complex newer stuff easier. You have to build that foundation. Feedback carbs are an ancient system, and to be completely honest with you, I know very little about them. When I was in Tech school years ago they didn't really even teach carbs at all. Everything driveability started with early fuel injection for me. I guess everyone starts learning at different points, but as long as the basic system knowledge is there we can all learn the new stuff together!
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
SUPER EXPLANATION. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Thanks a ton Ivan!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
You are a fantastic instructor.
Hey Richard, thanks!
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

Hey Javier, thanks for watching! Glad you learned a lot!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
This class is awesome, thank you
Awesome video, thanks so much. When I saw how long it was going to be, I thought I'd skip through it, but ended up watching it from start to finish, sometimes going back a bit to check again! One question: Does the heater stay on or does the ECU know when it's hot enough from exhaust gases and turn off the heater current?
Hey Vincent, thanks for watching! That all depends on the strategy of the computer. Many will keep it on, just at a lower current draw.
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Awesome content! I'm great a changing parts but know nothing about using scopes and multimeters in car even though I have a low voltage background. I definitely learned a lot from this video. Can I buy you guys a beer or something?
Very good video! Very thorough!
Thanks Curlyq1269!!!

Thanks for the info... Great Video.
Thanks for watching Terry!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Very nice commentary Mike in your discussion of narrow band O2 sensors. And with the O2 waveforms being shown on the two vehicles, ties it all together. On the second vehicle, it's obvious that it needs an O2 sensor and a fix of the oil leak. Is there any chance there will be a follow-up on the GTO to see what the actual problem is with it? Thanks again Mike and say hello to your co-worker also.
Hey Stuzman, yes we are going to get to actually fixing the GTO, probably in the class following widebands. I am planning to get into diagnosing specific lean or rich conditions. Different test procedures to look for vacuum leaks, or fuel issues, or whatever, but we will be fixing the GTO! :)
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
I Love that. Understood everything. !
Thanks for watching!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
WOW i am blown away by the fact that you can destroy an oxygen sensor by applying dialectric grease to the connector. I think back to all the years Ive replaced oxy sensors that malfunctioned a few months after, I so thoughtfully greased the connector. I just spent 100 bucks replacing a NEW upstream oxy sensor TWICE cause my so called mechanic friend told me "be sure to apply dialectric grease to keep water out and stop the corrosion. two months later that new oxy sensor was unresponsive!
Hey Jim! Sounds like you've learned something :) Thanks for watching!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Nice video, I have all 02 sensors that are inactive, what are the steps or how do I test this on a 2005 Kia Amanti?? Can you make a video on this?
awesome course.... thank you. structured very well
Thanks Aaron, glad you enjoyed the class. First time watching some of our stuff?
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
yes, first time! I am only deeply satisfied when I know how and why things work and this demystified O2 sensor and fuel trim !
Two failures P0141 and P0161 on 2002 ws6 transam. Could it be the sensors are fine but the catalytic converter has failed. Thanks for the great instructional video.
Hey JD Kaz, these codes are for both post cat sensors. What's the likelihood that both cats failed at the same time? All 4 sensors share a power and a ground. Also, these are heater circuit failures, so it's not a cat issue. I would investigate both heaters and see if they are open.
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Thanks for the quick reply. I just swapped out the intake manifold. I wonder if the gasget sealant is leaking. Also I have turned off the engine light and it hasn't yet returned. The webcast was very helpful. Keep up the good work!!!!
Thank u so much for the information g
Greatly appreciate learning
Thanks for watching!!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Both are correct
Great video and explanation my answer was D.
This is fantastic, thank you
Thanks Kellyn!!!

Thanks for watching Mohammed!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
very educative. thank you.
I think it would be D..I been watching a lot of videos because i'm trying to get my truck fixed.Hope i have won a t-shirt.Thanks
Thanks for watching Joyce. Sorry the shirts are only given out during the live broadcast. But D was the correct answer. Well done!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services Instructor
Thanks for this video, it's always good to review and continue understanding, also what was missed as a DONT DO is after a bong adapter is installed and oxygen sensor is also installed, exhaust leaks are present on the bong and then WELDED while sensor is still on
Hey Will, thanks for watching!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Excellent video dude!
Thanks MrJoeyB!!!
Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Awesome class
I to am looking forward to the wideband session. I am not a mechanic by trade but I'm learning these tests and their importance. Can you really clean if thats the case sensors?
Hey David, thanks for watching! The wide band class is already out. Be sure to check it out. Typically these sensors can not be cleared. Once contaminated it is a good idea to replace them for best performance of the sensor.
