One thing I've noticed after owning the same board model twice, same year, and everything, it still doesn't guarantee it'll ride the same as the last one did. Each board is built slightly different from one another because all the wood and material used in it is slightly different. So if you can it's good to hand pick boards in a store instead of buying online so you can flex test them, etc.
That’s a good point. You can’t tell that doing what we were doing at the demo, but something handmade of wood and glue pressed together has a tendency towards some variation.
Agreed! And it's under the radar. Very easy for manufacturers to construct a jig to test the four important parameters to up the quality control. Nose flex tail flex mid flex and torsional... as usual the consumer is snookered. PIG IN A POKE MY GRANDPA USED TO SAY.
If you live in Central CO then Christys Sports does an industry day at Loveland that is open to everyone. It is a good deal cuz u get a lift ticket and a beer included.

I Like your comment about the pro Modell Boards. I wanted to get the Standard uninc so Bad,and then went with the regular Standard. Hope that is the Right decison. Didn’t get to ride it yet.
I am riding Alchemist 159W 5'11, 144 lbs. size 9.5 My first impression was just like you. What the F is this overly stiff plank? However, after I gave it more time (5-10days on it), it magically soften(torsionally) a bit. And now it becomes one of my favs for steep/ big drop/ morning corduroy. Still, for hard bumpy ride, Excavator or Passport would be a much better choice. I found myself swapped to passport/ amplid surfari if the condition is nasty for the day.
Totally agree with No.4. Got Capita Mega Merc & Weston Japow(after watching your video) this season, Chose Mega Merc because of Arthur Longo is my favorite snowboarder, I would say this is definitely a great board, fast, poppy, and good for all conditions, but I know I only used 30% of it's potential. It's built for people like AL that can hit bir airs in the moutain.
The Alchemist at 160cm is best in the 2001 version (black green white). A little cost savings detected in my new 2023 Alchemist but it's the 163 length so maybe that's it - update - the 163 broke in and now I love it ! just so much more work for me at 5'10" 188lbs. boot 10.5 (former hardbooter). Don't say the Alchemist is so far beyond you... it's an easy board to ride - keep it sharp, find your stance and binding positioning. Get the correct size.
Ya. A couple weeks later I told the k2 board engineer, Justin Clark, about my experience and he said I would’ve been happy on a 159w. Wish I would’ve take a chance to ride it in another size and get that experience but all good! Thanks for weighing in.
Yes... same exact experience with a Bataleon Camel Two / Gimbal God board. I can tell it will be good in soft, deep snow. But at a resort, on hard pack or groomers... it was terrifying. Absolutely zero edge hold or control. It was so incredibly squirrely. It just felt so foreign to me compared to the direction cam/rock boards I usually ride that are great at a resort but also great in deep pow. Trying to lay a trench with this board was like going back to learning how to snowboard for the first time.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I really like Bataleon boards and some of them hold a good edge. But yes in general the worse the snow gets, the less beneficial 3BT becomes.
Interesting video. I think that buying a snowboard is like buying a camera/lens combo. There are some good all rounders and there are some that excell for certain things and arent so good for others. What you are using them for, as well as your own preferences and skill levels, as well as your budget, means that what might be best for one person will not be right for another. Every board has its strengths and weaknesses. You didn't mention aesthetics, but the topsheet design of a board, whilst not impacting its performance at all, can still be an important part of chosing a board, especially if you intend to keep it for a while. Might as well like what you are riding. 🙂 I liked your last point about all boards being fun. 👍 🏂
Yep I think you nailed it. I agree about the aesthetics too. I vowed a couple years ago to not buy boards unless I liked how they look, no matter how much I liked the shape. :)
Did you get any laps on a Salomon highpath? I have read different reviews about that board but I like that it seems to be a freeride shape with a forgiving flex.
As someone who hasn't been riding as long as some others I find that the big brands make awesome stuff, the Burton Namedropper is the board I learned on and my park board is a Salomon Craft which I love (especially since I sized down a bit so its a bit more flexy). However I find that I would rather get a board from the smaller brands normally, Public makes some super cool park decks that I want to ride and Cardiff, Surfcraft make some sweet powder rippers that I would love to ride as well. I have a Sims Solo and I love that board, its more responsive than a 16.2m side cut would sound, and it rides great even on groomers. I mean nothing against the big brands but I think the smaller brands are willing to get more experimental at times and often just as good if not better quality. That being said there are plenty of Capita, Salomon, Ride, or Burton boards I would gladly ride, but smaller brands have a charm and since they are often more specialized I feel they are more interesting in their catagory.

Great to see your DRIFT channel & review! You look like a bigger guy. Im an Aussie (52) living now here in SLC, so maxing the snow when possible. Im 6'3-'4 (193cm), 205lbs & US 13 boot. Riding a 162W Nitro Slash in Pow which i love, but just got a NS Proto FR Drag Free, so super wide in 160cm , im struggling to get comfy as youve really got to drive it hard, maybe too advanced. What does going longer do, for a taller guy, make it more stable or not? Hard when i never get to demo, just have to guess & buy. Cheers
What’s the width on that one? I wonder if it’s almost too wide. For a tall rider, going longer definitely helps with float and overall stability. You have lot more leverage over the tip of a board than a much shorter rider, even if you’re the same weight.
Which is now the frontier right? I’ve come supper close to getting one but haven’t yet. Probably perfect for someone like me who likes bigger dimensions in a softer board.
Dude I wish there were demo days. It seems like all the mountains I am working at don't do anything like this. I don't get it. I remember back in the day they were lots of demo days. Like you said in the beginning i'd like to sample a variety of boards to see the difference. Otherwise I got to choose by specs.
For sure it would be amazing if you could try everything before you buy but like I said, you can often get a pretty good idea by looking at specs once you have a good feel for what's out there.
@@Drift-Products Think the shape matters? I am mostly into twin freestyle boards. I tend to prefer boards with round spoon like noses but sometimes look at other boards. I figure it probably doesn't matter at all but it does somewhat in my mind so then maybe it does matter on a psycho level.
I think when it comes to tip shape (and sometimes tail) that is not in contact with snow, it’s mostly in our heads. Pointy or blunt, round or funky angles… it just doesn’t seem to make a huge difference most of the time. Maybe a bit in powder depending on what it is. I go back and forth over the years, sometimes I prefer classic round tips and tails, other times I’ve preferred funkier new school shapes. Right now it seems like the classic round is coming back and is more popular.
Of the boards I've ridden, the Aviator 2.0. Best board I've ever ridden in crappy snow. Maybe the Standard Uninc or Surfari. The Freecarver is pretty sweet too, as long as you want to be on edge all the time. @JohnPhillips-qw4db

Nice! Very similar. I’d say the excavator is a touch more aggressive in flex and on edge and the Hybrid is a little more relaxed. But it’s close. For me, I’d take the Excavator but I always felt like the Hybrid wasn’t quite big enough for me.
Where do you ride? I didn’t think the deep thinker was that bad on a groomer, but it didn’t blow my mind either. I just thought over all it felt really good. Perfect flex pattern for me.
Reminds me of the Standard Uninc but a bit stiffer and more aggressive. Seems like something for stomping backcountry booters where you need float, power, and stability.

I’m currently thinking about the jones flagship but is there anything you would say is better ? Off the top of my head, the Yes Pick Your Line or PYL Uninc are both awesome and hold a good edge, the Flagship is solid, maybe something from Mervin (the new Steely D floats, bombs, and holds an edge). The Rome Ravine Select, Cardiff Powgoda, Burton Deep Thinker come to mind as boards that can charge and float.

I mean for ice and charging I’d go aviator 2.0 but it won’t be quite as good in pow. It charges as hard or harder than the flagship and is even better on ice.
Sorry to weigh in... In March the snowpack is shrinking (usually) and the ice emerges from under the groom. Yesterday I hit an unseen ice horn at speed on a toe side carve and it really tweaked my longitudinal arch and Achilles tendon front foot. I had a light snappy Ride board. If I would have had my 163 K2 Alchemist under me that bump would have gone unnoticed. If you are looking for a hard charging board for ice, I would try to be sure it is engineered for blocking or at least dissipating unwanted energy transmission, but without the loss of board feel. Look for dissimilar materials in its construction to eliminate resonance and a light weight nose (un sprung weight - same reason you buy aluminum wheels for your Porsche). Riding fast with comfort and control requires dampness.
158. It was great, no complaints at all. Stiffer than I was expecting but really good at powder and carving. Didn’t really get to test it in nasty snow.
@Drift-Products okay cool. I'm similar specs to you, 6'2 220 with an 11 boot and just picked up a 158 2023 for 350 to replace my 156 orca. Been wanting a volume shift with camber.

Well, I haven’t ridden it a lot either so I’m not quite ready to review but if you’ve watched my reviews you know I like bigger boards but they often end up stiffer than I want. The flex on the powgoda 162, for me, was as perfect as I’ve ever experienced. Holds a solid edge, not to aggressive but you can ride it hard, solid float, it’s legit.
@@Drift-Products I was a little concerned with the sizing, width wise due to the taper, but I see we have the same boot size 11.5. Im a little taller and heavier though so still wish they had a 164 or something.
Been on them for 3-4 years, they have changed a bit, but man, all of them are so stable. 100% recommend to anyone interested in directional free ride, whether riding aggressive or relaxed.

I think some brands/factories are actually pretty dialed in this regard. But not all, that’s for sure.

I got on that board and sold it was a stiff plank..I heard they have factory issues.
Depends on the board. They changed factories so the boards are different even if the shapes are the same. Some I like better, others worse.

I really want to try the high path but I tried the new Assassin shape instead.

Gotta recommend the Jones Explorer. Basically the perfect all mountain board unless ur launching 100 foot booters.

I have a 2021 Burton Deep Thinker. It is, frankly, garbage on groomers or hard pack. But man, in pow or tracked up, uneven conditions it is amazing.

even just changing to a different factory will change the same board from year to year.
For sure. I noticed those changes with Bataleon, who changed for this season to a new factory.

Yes, Dave rode it. Very similar but a little better on a groomer with a bit of backseat camber under the back foot.

Gotta try a deep thinker
I almost bought one a few weeks back when they were doing their big sale but I didn’t. Big mistake!
Been on them for 3-4 years, they have changed a bit, but man, all of them are so stable. 100% recommend to anyone interested in directional free ride, whether riding aggressive or relaxed.

I like the last couple graphics better. IfI remember right it’s black with a couple rainbows in between the bindings?
