    Today I’m going to compare two fantastic budget mirrorless cameras, the Sony a6100 and the Canon M50. We’re going to take a deep look and compare them for both photography and video. These are two of the most popular beginner mirrorless cameras from Sony and Canon and they offer great value.
    There are some similarities and some very significant differences, so I will cover the strengths and weaknesses of the #a6100 and the #m50 and compare them in a way that relates to real life use. We’ll talk about body design, framerate and resolution, autofocus, lens options, audio features, and ergonomics.
    I will also look at the #sony a6100 and the Canon M50 in terms of battery life, timelapse, viewfinder, live streaming options and recording limit.
    Finally I’ll tell you which option I think is best for different uses.

    I can't believe I just watched 28 minutes long video without a pause! You make it so interesting. You must be spending a lot of time learning all the features of each camera. I own the Sony a6100 and did not know a lot of about it until I watched this video. Probably there is more on your dedicated video. I need to find and watch it. By the way, you missed one important feature on the a6100. 100% silent shooting. For me, that the #1. I love my a6100. I get much sharper images from it than my Canon 80D while using with the Sigma 150-600mm (with MC-11). Not very comfortable combo, but images are superior. Anyway, you are doing awesome job! We are greatful to have you one of the RUclipsrs!

      Hy, I'm using canon 1200d with 55-250mm kit lens and now I want to shift to something better. I would love to know your thoughts on which camera should I get. I'm confused between a 6100 and a 6400. Also you mentioned that you use it with sigma 600mm is it directly compatible with the camera body or I need to get an adapter. I would love to know your thoughts. Also my instagram I'd is @bunchofpixls for portrait and @iamthenegitive for birds.

    OMG! I am super glad I watched this video (again) because I've been saving for a canon m50 since everyone in youtube including veteran youtubers are highly and consistently recommending canon m50 as the best. But after listening to you attentively and taking notes of everything I'm starting to realize that sony a6100 is way far the better choice for an all-around purpose camera. again... i am super glad. great help.

    As someone who has always relied on my phone's camera, I finally broke and bought the Canon M50 last September. Since then, I have watched all your videos on it, and after months of daily use I finally feel like I'm starting to get the hang of both photography and video in manual modes.
    There are some things in retrospect I wish I would've gotten the Sony for, primarily the 1080p 120fps mode for shooting slo-mo B roll, but overall Canon's super easy interface, fully articulating screen, and web cam software were all big selling points that helped me as a newbie to quickly pick up and play with decent results both with shooting photo/video and live streaming.
    I just recently bought the Sigma F1.4 16mm and 30mm lenses (in part thanks to your review) and have been absolutely SHOCKED as how they have transformed my little M50. While the kit lens was great to get started, I'm just constantly blown away by both the photo and video performance of the Sigma lenses. I am a little sad thinking about how I'm now 100% locked into the EF-M world, but overall I'm super happy with my purchase. The M50 has literally changed my life!
    Your channel absolutely sets the bar in terms of production quality and depth of information. You have become my go-to source before making any A/V equipment purchase. I'm currently looking at the DJI Ronin-SC gimbal (deeply discounted atm) and your video on it really taught me a lot. Would love to see your take on the newer Ronin RSC2!
    Thanks for the great content!

    I've never owned a DSLR camera and the last digital camera I bought was a cheap Panasonic Lumix in 2011. Since then, I've been using my phone to take photos. After doing a bunch of research on decent budget cameras, I've whittled it down to the M50 and A6100. It's a hard choice, but your video has mentioned so many things I hadn't known about either camera. I'm now leaning towards the A6100, as it seems to offer a lot more for a nominally higher cost.

    I am a classical pianist and I‘m looking a camera for good video quality but what‘s important for me is that it can be connected with external microphones to record higher quality. I think a lot of musicians would be interested on hearing your opinion on that and if you also have other suggestions for cameras.

    Here in 2022... If you're deciding between these two, there's no competition really. It's the A6100 all day, every day.
    I've owned a Canon M100, M3, M50, 5DIII, and a Sony A7III, A6000 and A6100. The A6100 is the only one I still own.
    I don't have a professional need to own a full-frame anymore (if I did, it'd probs still be an A7III to be honest - if I needed more punch, I'd rent it) - but all joking aside, there's a LOT of pro scenarios an A6100 will handle just fine with good glass attached. The M50 can't really handle any.
    Photog wise, the A6100's AF functionality kicks the M50 into the corner. It's still phenomenal in 2022. Image quality is probably the area the pair are most evenly matched for the price bracket.
    In video? Ermagerd.
    The M50 can do 4k 24fps at a hefty crop, with no dual pixel AF. It can do 120fps, at 720p only with no audio. That's the end of the upsides. That's the sum-total of its high end capabilities.
    The A6100 can shoot 4k at 24fps with full AF and no crop, and 30fps with full AF and a minor crop; it can also shoot 120fps at full HD with full AF, and audio, as well as S&Q modes for in-camera slo-mo / effective timelapse, plus it has built-in intervalometer, and no recording limit. It can do clean HDMI out, plus record 4.2.2 on an external source.
    The price difference for that functionality is negligible this far from release, and E mount is far more supported than EF-M mount; any form factor grudges can be negated with a cage from Amazon, and the viewfinders / screens are the same in practise. The only real advantage the M50 retains in 2022 on the A6100 is an articulating screen. This genuinely can be a deal-breaker, but if it is, you should look elsewhere entirely - the M50 just isn't worth it nowadays simply for an artic screen.
    The M50 is a high-end/expensive "fun" APS-C camera; the A6100 is a mid-range/cheap "pro" APS-C camera. It is insane what they packed into that body and how well it stands up against pro-kit, for the price, a few years after its release. The M50 by contrast could never be used, reliably, in a pro situation beyond fairly basic photog.
    Spend the extra dollar, and the extra time watching tutorials (such as @Tech Gear Talk of course!) on how to get the most out of your camera body - the A6100 will serve you for a lifetime, both personally and for a surprising portion of pro work. The M50 will satisfy you fine if you're just doing family photog and have money to burn, but if you're looking for more from your camera, it will frustrate you until you decide to spend the extra on a better body.

    We are a greek RUclips channel but we also started the last year with shooting weddings, advertises etc . Although we shoot with Sony and Canon ecosystems from the higher end models.... I really wanted to thank you since your videos helped out a ton as we grow our channel but also our understanding about cameras and the way they work...and I mean it . Understanding and shooting with lower end models helps you to make better videos with your high end equipment . Also since I watched almost every video of your channel and as a owner of the m50 as my fourth camera I really would like to see a video with this little beast and the speedbooster . You already made a video with the speedbooster but I realized that many didn't understand that if you don't have a full frame lens it wouldn't work as expected and I think you have got a lot of room to show different lens options..... Greetings from Greece and THANK YOU for your videos. PS .... SONY IS ALMOST PERFECT, but CANON RULES .....

    Great video, the sony seems like the better option. I've been heavily into looking at cameras the last few weeks trying to understand what is the best first camera for me because I've always wanted to get into photography. Out of interest, what camera would you recommend? Doesn't have to be either of these if you can think of a different camera, but I'd be using it for travel and landscape photography mainly and I'm not really bothered about video performance. Looking to spend up to £700 ($1000). Thanks :)

    Love the content you make! I feel like there is a camera that you are potentially missing out on for "budget streaming", the canon m200. It has clean hdmi for streaming and is the same image quality as a canon m50. It is basically the same camera as a m50 just no viewfinder, and no audio jack but it has clean hdmi.

    I am a wedding videographer and i tested using sony and canon, and there is a hug difference if we talk about using both cameras in kit lenses. The sony is good, but i don't like the color, it requires color grading a lot to get the right skin tone and lastly the auto-focus of the sony sometimes gives me back focus, but slowmo and 4k sony is great. For M50 color is great, auto-focus is really amazing and it's easy to control the cam, especially if you use it with gimbal

It’s my first camera and I’ve heard the M50 is much easier for beginners, but I’m planning on keeping this camera for a long time so I could learn both the same one day. Great video! • @CourtneyVisser
    @CourtneyVisser 4 года назад +3

    This video was fantastic - appreciated every minute. Only thing I wish it had was direct comparisons - your photography and videography is beautiful, but it's also good to see the same image side by side or one after the other per camera, as well as without post-production. I'm a musician and streamer looking to invest in time (gotta save up), and so far the M50 has been my top choice, but the lack of clean HDMI is a real bummer, especially because I move a fair amount when I play so disabling autofocus to get clean HDMI likely isn't feasible. I know the Canon software is still in beta but it doesn't seem great, and I'm on Mac which isn't compatible. With kit lenses the Sony is quite a bit more expensive here in the UK (£650 vs £750), and I really prefer the articulating screen in the Canon, but perhaps it'd be a better option to work towards. The other thing that seemed to stand out in your video was that Canon's images look a tad oversaturated compared to the Sony, but I can't tell if this is just because of the choice of photos put into the video, because many of the Sony ones are more industrial and low-light type photos. Any thoughts? Thanks again so much!

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  4 года назад +1

      Hi Courtney - a few things. First, don't worry about the Canon color being saturated, that would be my editing. If you're going to stream and are wanting that awesome Canon color, look at this: ruclips.net/video/Nir8pfvfdFI/видео.html
      I don't know how long your streams are, but the Sony can be powered via USB while running which is amazing for long streams. With the M50, there is a solution that uses a coupler: ruclips.net/video/TOpsG_jlEbU/видео.html
      The streaming software is available for Mac now - it is a lower resolution though.
      I hope this helps.

There was a steep learning curve with my A6000 but it was worth it in the long run. Given the a6100 features that beat the M50, it will be interesting to see how Canon comes back at that with the M50 mk2. Really hope the 4K DPAF issue and higher frame rates are the top items for Canon to resolve. If they do, and can do something on low light performance I think they'll be back on top. Hey there, I got my M50 in the last week and I love it. It's perfect for my needs, but I have one huge complaint. As you know the battery life isn't the best and when I have to change it out when recording video, the battery door that's on the bottom is too wide to be able to pop it open and swap batteries when the quick release plate is mounted on the tripod, so I have to remove the camera from the tripod and then remove the quick release plate to swap batteries or change out the memory card. It's terrible. But, thanks to you, I learned of the DC power plug to shoot continuously and now I don't have to open the door to remove the battery while recording... It's such a great tip, much appreciated!!

      Your right but I got a solution for you as I was also having the same issue. And it only cost me $3, just buy a metal extension tube with the female to female threats. This has solve the issue as now I can keep my camera on the tripod and have enough room to remove the battery. Plus have that additional metal extension has allow me to now hold my camera much better as it acts as a nice grip holder. Email me and I can send you a pick so you know how it looks like. The metal extension I picked it up a my local camera store.

      The settings for color, sharpness, etc. are adjustable on any camera. Just tweak down the setting on the Canon is it is too punchy, or something. As for lenses, you may try Sigma for Sony, unless doing up the scale from Sony kit lenses, to get better results. Sony kits are known to be as good as there menu system -- not so great. The Sony auto focus is great. Sony has improved their color science, which is a good thing. A better comparison to the Sony in the Canon line is the Canon M6 mark II. The whole kit, with viewer should be around $1K, but look for discounts to come. By Christmas, depending on the dollar value, I am predicting up to $300 discounts on the whole kit. Of course Sony will discount as well.

      Yeah, why did these cameras go up so much?!

    • @bulcub
      @bulcub 3 года назад +1

      Covid bro! plus supply and demand! so folks who have these cameras are overpricing so that they can upgrade to something better! there are enough people who will pay the outrageous prices! It took me 4 tries just to get my a5100 for $300.00 on ebay because I stuck with my budget for the REAL COST and added a kit 50mm for about $80.00.

    I'm a RUclips singer and have been using a Canon Rebel T3i for years now and in desperate need of an upgrade. Any recommendations for a more professional-looking indoor (mainly) video shoots in a room with LED lights? Thanks for this amazing review!

      If you’re lighting is good, you’re way ahead of the game. Do you need to record for more than 30 minutes at a time? If not, check out the M50 or M50mkii, otherwise the a6100 is a good option.

      @@TechGearTalk thank you so much!! I do record about 5-10 mins at a time for my music but after some research I’m gearing towards a cam with a flipscreen and more recent since I’ll be using it for many years to come. I was thinking of the a6400 or a AC7 ff cam (which I know is not relevant to this video). Do you think that’s overkill for just shooting good quality indoor music videos? Thanks again!!

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  3 года назад +9

      It’s not overkill, but u less you’re grading footage shot in slog2/3 or hlg, you can save money and get the a6100 ruclips.net/video/TrAe8XaYwwY/видео.html

    I’ve been watching all your videos while quarantined here in nyc and your attention to detail on every video is incredible. I knew nothing about filmmaking and feel like I’ve had a free film school. I’m a stand up comedian and I’m going to get an M50 to film my sets when comedy is up and running again. I just wanted to thank you for making the information easily understandable and entertaining!
