Massive thanks for this guys…. BMW quoted £1700 for this job, but thanks to your video and my son’s help, we did it for just the cost of the gasket set from BMW.. £40! Took us 2 afternoons work. I did buy the full set of parts from BMW that their job sheet suggests, which includes all the strut bolts, but didn’t seem necessary to replace these end, so will try to get money back on those. Thanks again. 👍👍
Thanks alot for your feedback, we're really pleased you was able to use our video and save yourself a small fortune by fixing your car yourself. We'll done lads 👍
Only 8 mins in, and this is a cracking video lads. Just picked up a 2018 f82 comp, and recently noticed that im having some oily burning smell occasionally coming through the cabin air vents. No fault codes, or noticeable oil level droppage, however i have quite a strong vacuum when opening oil filler cap when car is running. The only logical conclusion is that it is VCG, but even then, when i look where you guys looked for oil residue, theres not really anything noticeable. With that being said though, that smell isnt coming out of thin air, and so ive probably just caught it early. I plan on changing my charge pipes to better aftermarket ones, so i might as well crack out as many jobs as i can whilst im in that deep. Probs will change spark plugs and coil packs too. This video doesnt skip any of the finer details that couldve otherwise led to ambiguity for some viewers. Thanks again Rick... and rick.
No problem thank you for the feedback, just read this together and Rick believes your problem could be the PCV valve as the vacuum from the intake pulls in oil vapour from the rocker cover, let us know how you get on 👍
That was a great show, Camara work was of high quality. Very informative. Music went so well with the show. If you need any improvement’s on my car please let me know. Well done.Ric/Ric.
@@MECHANRICKS yeah was quoted 500 quid from local dealer , so spent 50 on parts and did it myself in 3/4 hours 👌🏻 would have took far bit longer if I didn’t have ur video tho
Great job folks! An M2 Competition owner here from the USA. Do you recommend upgrading to an aluminum valve cover as well? Some folks have reported issues with cracks in the OEM valve cover.
I have seen of other people having issues with the valve cover cracking, it is a good upgrade solution, that been said if only the gasket is at fault repairing the gasket only as we did here is all that is necessary 👍
Really depends on what your asking. Do you intend to buy the parts and do it yourself, Are you asking what we would charge to do the job including supplying the parts or finally a rough guide as to what a garage might charge compared to a dealership?
awesome video, very detailed. I've seen a couple where they replace the whole cover. how can you verify that the cover hasn't been damaged. what is the solution your spraying on the sides ? thank you for posting this video
Thank you for the comment, we identified the leak to be just the gasket in this occasion by thorough inspection, the cover can warp & crack but we determined that the cover was good on this occasion and the car is Ricks personal car so had we got it wrong we would of done the job again by replacing the cover. Its a tough call to make with a paying customer as if you change it all at the time its a guaranteed fix. Hopefully though with the help of this video some DIY'ers will be able to do the job themselves and save a lot of money. The solution being spayed is brake & clutch cleaner. Thanks again for your support 👍
Another great video guys. Really enjoyed watching! I hope you remembered to take that rag out 😂 Is there a need for there to be so many different bolt sizes and types? It seems so unnecessary! Out of curiosity, what would that fix roughly cost at a garage?
Thanks mate, happy to hear you enjoyed it. Yes we removed the rag, but brownie points to you for noticing 😂 As for cost of the repair I estimate around £300
I did this and caused overpressurised crank because pcv was full of oil. Blew my turbos within a week lol i always recommended new valve cover or atleast test diaphragm
@PALPABLEemotions changing just the gasket caused crank to over pressurise. Pcv was clogged full of oil carbon , no where to release pressure. Blew turbo seals and leaking rear main seal. New valve cover done the job though. No more problem touch wood
First of all thanks again for this video as iv just changed mine today! However now iv got a drivetrain fault and if I sit still it runs lumpy then cunts out. 😢 I did break the air intake breaker pipe and tapped it back up do you think this could be the cause? Cheers Awaiting someone to read the codes just now 😢😢
Hello, great video very informative loved seeing a close up of all the bolts. How long would you recommend to put aside to complete this job? 1 person diy 👍
If the breather pipe split, will it make the car run loss of power/ stutter? I have split mine and ducked taped temporary and my car now is stuttering at the moment. Ordering a new pipe now....
@@MECHANRICKS Bad news, 2 days ago I changed to a new pipe and the fault is still there :( It only stutter around 2.5k+/- rpm feeling like the fuel is not reaching the engine. Car is vibrating at that point. Prior to that - A few weeks ago I even replaced the sparkplugs at the same time when I changed the rocker cover. What else can it be? I'll have to try a live data log next I guess.?!
Try get some data from the ECU fault codes etc. And ensure the fuel injectors are connected and sealed properly. If the problem wasn't there before changing the cover/gasket it shouldn't be too difficult to find the fault

Yeah always best to check if your aware of what your doing, the problem on this M4 was literally gasket failure only 👍
What do you mean? DOING this job caused you more problems?
Anyway, how did you get on, and what was the final result (if youve cracked on with it lol)

Thanks, definitely get your breather pipe replaced and hopefully will cure running issues if you have any fault codes after that let us know 👍

Yes it will as un metered air is getting into the engine, a new pipe should fix your problem 👍
