F80 M3 700 hp E85 best car I've ever owned put 40k miles modded ran hard flawless maintenance now has 88k miles runs like the day I bought it. Gorgeous car to look at and feels exciting. Very pleased.
I'm at mid-60 K on my 2018 F80. It's a beast of an engine. I keep up on all the maintenance oil changes roughly every 2000 mi. Running it on flex-fuel stage 2 tune this thing is a blast to drive. I put it through hell daily driving it taking it to the drift track and the road course track and it just keeps on going, bro. There are people at this point running this engine up to 200,000 mi with maybe 1 or two of the issues you mentioned like PCV valve etc. which is really better than a lot of other commuter cars out there which is surprising considering all the abuse these cars can handle and keep running fine. Hats off to BMW on the S55.
I've been running an F82 S55 primarily as a track car for about 6 years, estimate it's covered around 15k track miles. BMW did an amazing job with the cooling, oil surge protection and general track readiness of these cars. I used to log everything but no longer bother as it works so well. I've never known a car to be so stable on track with cooling and I've tracked so many cars. The only problem I've had was a coil (replaced all 6). Remember watching a video with one of the engineers responsible for building the F8X. He said the brief was to build a car that could take sustained track use without overheating, my experience says they did exactly this. The road cars run the same cooling as the GT4 cars, same engine and gearbox too afaik.
This is great info! Plan to go to an F8X platform after my N54 powered track car meets its end, but 5k+ track miles and just regular maintenance so far! 22 oil changes and counting
I can confirm! I was on a number of trackdays with pretty hot weather and the oil temps are constantly around 110°C. And as the turbos are water cooled with an electrical waterpump you are pretty safe here, too. Regular oil changes and maintanance and you are good to go :)
Really nice comprehensive video! I’ve had my 2016 F82 Competition for 6 trouble-free years. I’m at 54000 miles and I change my oil at around 5000 miles (plus other maintenance ahead of schedule). Love the car and I still get a big smile every time the garage door goes up. I know there will be some maintenance expenses soon but it’s worth it, in my opinion. I plan on keeping this car for many years since it is simply the best car I’ve ever owned! Still turns heads and super fun to drive! 👍🏁😊

Hello so I can see from this video that you know what you’re talking about as far as the S55 motors. So I have a question for you. I have a stage 1 2015 M4 with 77K miles. I did the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing do to a leak and replace the motor mounts and spark plugs at 50K. I also did the belts and tensioners so what other maintenance do I need to do before I hit 80K or 100K miles?
These cars are fairly reliable when it comes to high performance BMWs. 3+ years with about 50K miles done on mine with stock hub with a good mix up hard track driving too. The key is to keep it as stock as possible when it comes to tuning, and preventively upgrade the weak points with better than OEM parts such as the Wagner intercooler. Many aftermarket parts, whether suspension, cooling, etc honestly make the car worse but keep on top of maintenance and take care of the key items such as plastic chargepipes etc and you’re golden.
Cheap quality aftermarket parts make the car worse. High quality aftermarket parts will improve on the car. I have bilstein b16 damptronic coilovers, spl full rear arms, SPL front upper and lower control arms on my f82 and the handling and steering response on it is the same as a 991.1 gt3 rs.
been running flex fuel stage 2 tune with a hub for years now and i put it through hell and it keeps running great. I do oil changes every 2k on account of the ethanol.
Would it be a good idea to periodically check the torque on the crank hub bolt to make sure that it is torqued down and tight? I have a 2018 M4 currently with 32000 miles on it. I am the second owner. Other than oil changes, l haven’t had any issues with the car, but that crank hub scares me. Thanks.
About the crank hub and it seeming to affect DCT cars more: I've seen surveys that do seem to indicate that DCT cars are affected by that part slipping about twice as often as manual cars. BUT! BMW sold 4 times as many DCT cars as manual. With that in mind it would seem to indicate that the DCT cars are actually half as likely to have this issue. While the DCT is capable of super fast shifts, it's also not going to have a clumsy/aggressive driver dumping the clutch on upshifts or ever having a non rev-matched downshift like you can with a manual. Just food for thought...
I'm going to do my best to spend money with you guys... just picked up a 12k mi F87 M2C to replace my aging 1M. Thanks for the video! I would love to see videos on how to lighten the car as well.
M engine for me would have to be the S58, without question. Most potent engine. Unmatched tuning potential. The B58 has done well also if you are including cars like the M240i
Any possibility you guys will be turning this into a series where you'll have follow up DIY videos on how to replace the items you mentioned, at least for the most common ones? That would be so awesome for your customers who buy parts from you.

It is a very good engine, once the flaws are fixed. I don't think it is 'the best' M engine though, as the newer S58 engine is a more developed, better, more modern engine. I had the B58 in my previous car, an M140i. This was a fantastic engine, and after I tuned it to 455bhp/634nm, it was just a beast. My current car is the OG M2, and has the N55 engine, which is just not quite as good in any area.
you should make a series all about german vehicle maintenance intervals and what needs to be done or modified to make sure your vehicle reliable in the long term. I find there isn't any materials or documentation for people out there
I would love to have a bmw m4 or m3 but I’ve seen too many bimmers broken down and the ones that are on the road are constantly getting work done … sooooooo expensive to keep them running cherry.

I'm at 110k miles, Iv replaced a leaking valve cover, leaking air charge cooler, and some accelerator sensors, aside from that everything has been very reliable I do keep up with all the basic maintenance and don't drive the car very hard to be honest.
@tjackman Thanks man, I'm very grateful I get to own one. In my opinion, it's one of the best values on the second-hand market. They've come down in price compared to last year, and when you look at that price segment it's hard to beat. It's ultra low mile at under 8k, so fingers crossed I get to enjoy it worry free for years to come. Keep working at it, I never thought I'd get this, and if I can, you or anyone else surely can.
Love performance but this is planned obsolescence, which is found pretty much every where now. 8 years ago I spoked to some Germans who worked on the automotive industry and also an American engineer who was based in Germany. They all told me that German cars are really built for 70 to 80k miles. That's crazy considering the price tag on these things
Why do 40i guys always try to use the word S58 in same sentence nobody says n55 s55. Your b58 shares literally nothing except for the shell of the short block only it's got nothing in common with S58 😂 nothing swaps overs nothing fits. You guys really need to stop mentioning m motors with your b58 truck engine. It's strong it's cool it's not an M engine.
Damm bro did you get gapped by a b58 bruv 😂! You sound hurt. But I get it bro. Those are the two motors I like bro. I love the S68 as well. Maybe the M60i vs the V8 from the 2011 M3 would be a dope video.
Non-related. I have a 2015 M235i N55 era model. Car is a tank and reliable with proper maintenance. Replace wear items and change your fluids and your car can have160k miles as I do

I am the second owner. Other than oil changes, l haven’t had any issues with the car, but that crank hub scares me. Thanks.
Amazing knowledge 👍
About the crank hub and it seeming to affect DCT cars more: I've seen surveys that do seem to indicate that DCT cars are affected by that part slipping about twice as often as manual cars. BUT! BMW sold 4 times as many DCT cars as manual. With that in mind it would seem to indicate that the DCT cars are actually half as likely to have this issue. While the DCT is capable of super fast shifts, it's also not going to have a clumsy/aggressive driver dumping the clutch on upshifts or ever having a non rev-matched downshift like you can with a manual. Just food for thought...
It affects dct cars more because many more dct gearboxes were made. If you break down the #'s it's 4x more likely to have ch failure in a 6mt than dct
I want my old E30 M3 back after watching this.
Great stuff as always
Thanks Pete!
Really really great video. Well done and thank you.
The B58 has done well also if you are including cars like the M240i
Love my f80 been my dream car for years, glad it lived up to the hype for how excited I was to get one
Any possibility you guys will be turning this into a series where you'll have follow up DIY videos on how to replace the items you mentioned, at least for the most common ones? That would be so awesome for your customers who buy parts from you.
Youre a few weeks ahead haha - we have started publishing the DIYs for this platform on our other FCP Euro DIY Channel - all of which we shot while making a build series on the car/platform here on this channel!
Great car. I have a 2017 F80 M3. I wish I would have watched a video like this earlier in my ownership. I've already spent $ on items I probably should have sought an aftermarket option for (A2W intercooler, J-pipe, etc). Thanks for making this video.
Hi Gareth, you look good man, love your DIY videos, i just did my first $500 purchased, good luck to you man.
Great video like always, main take away from this video is to “change your oil” lol
When in doubt.... change your oil. 🤣
Need to do one the 2018 and up S4 80, to 100 thousand miles.
Super interesting stuff, and kiiiiind of getting nervous about my 125.000 mile S55 engine now 😂
Sell it lol
Did I miss it or did you not mention the charge pipes? Those are usually the first component to fail.
Great review. Many thanks
Only 60k views..unreal..the detail in this video is much appreciated..to be honest with you, I kinda got scared of M3s now 😂
Dont be scared, just have to embrace the little bit of potential pain haha. Lets hope the video finds more people that need it!
@@fcpeuro-media haha..yeah..I've always dreamed with a luxury car with 350+HP..no way I'm passing on the M3..If I heard correctly, it seems that timely oil changes can help avoid many issues! 👍🏽
@@cayetano6547 Preventative maintenance and upkeep is the key to any car having its best life!
Great Video, I own an F82 M4 for a few months now and I love it, only 40.000 km, so hopefully not much maintenance in the near future, Request: could you do video on how to replace the rear bearings for this car, I have search a lot, but I cannot find any videoa on this anywhere, E46, E9x, but not for the F8x.
thank you. that's really good info
what a great video, i could listen to you talk for hours
Wow great video! So far the only things that have gone bad on mine are the PCV valve and the rear wheel bearings. I'm at 65k
Do you have a video on the s63?
It is a very good engine, once the flaws are fixed.
I don't think it is 'the best' M engine though, as the newer S58 engine is a more developed, better, more modern engine.
I had the B58 in my previous car, an M140i. This was a fantastic engine, and after I tuned it to 455bhp/634nm, it was just a beast.
My current car is the OG M2, and has the N55 engine, which is just not quite as good in any area.
you guys should do a similar video for S58
you should make a series all about german vehicle maintenance intervals and what needs to be done or modified to make sure your vehicle reliable in the long term. I find there isn't any materials or documentation for people out there
I would love to have a bmw m4 or m3 but I’ve seen too many bimmers broken down and the ones that are on the road are constantly getting work done … sooooooo expensive to keep them running cherry.
Have to pay play buddy. You shouldn't be looking at any performance car if you don't have the money or hand-skill. You see a lot of BMWs in general because they are the #1 selling luxury car in the world by volume.
Good video, nice explanation. Having second thoughts on buying an M3
Very informative video. Thanks 👍🏼😎
Which important maintenance service would you recommend based on the millage for this S55 engine? and when these are done which" OTHER" services/parts would you do or replaced while doing this?
Thanks again!!
You guys should do this for the B48
On it.
Yes, I have a 2018 f80 M3 6-speed manual and I just completed all of the full bolts Ons one piece Crankhub and MHD stage 2+ on 93 only. That really car up and I love it! Mine has 82k on the clock.
Do you have a similar video on M57 engine?
Can u do one of these for a s63
Sure can!
I love these videos
We love that you love these videos Josh!
I replaced my plastic German made valve cover gasket with a Chinese made aluminum one. Best decision ever.
curious on what the s58 ends up needing 2-3 years from now.
I'm at 110k miles, Iv replaced a leaking valve cover, leaking air charge cooler, and some accelerator sensors, aside from that everything has been very reliable I do keep up with all the basic maintenance and don't drive the car very hard to be honest.
This is very informative
Great Video!
good job on the weight loss
Where can I find the e85 specific spark plugs?
differential bushing is another factory issue but fixed after 2018
Dang, if you want to go broke, you know what to do. Thansk for the info
Hi Im have 2016 bmw m4 f82 dct tranmision have code 40f201 gearshift rod 6-4 what that mean can you let me know what insure thank you verry much.
Please do f10 m5 or m6 s63tu
Do a video for the S65! I'm sure the table will be twice as large with issues. Jokes aside it would be useful.
We're gunna need a bigger table 😄
Great video, thank you guys
So is the S55 best ///M engine? I'm a bit lost as you talk a lot about maintenance for about 19 mins
Thank God I'm a mechanic 😊.
That'll help!
This video stressed me out as a soon to be M2C owner this coming tuesday....
I just test drove an M2 comp, what a gorgeous car and boy does it drive well. You're living my dream!
They are nice, but this is not an acceptable amount of GAURANTEED to fail critical parts.
Can you do this for the B58 and S58?
Replace wear items and change your fluids and your car can have160k miles as I do
Well n55 and s55 are closely related, sold my n55 at 132k car took a lot of abuse from me and kept pushing lol
Do the s58!
Great video for making you scared of BMWs.
All BMW’s from the last 25 years leak oil from the same 3 things- oil pan gasket, valve cover & filter housing seal. It almost seems intentional
reliable for how many km?
Very reliable engine…except for these 50 potential problems. After watching this, I would never buy one. As for the aluminum oil cooler guard, with those huge openings, it sure doesn’t look like it would prevent road debris from hitting the oil cooler.
All engines have issues.
i've had no major issues for 70 k. I drive the piss out of it.
Love the video. I’d like to see one for the M177 c63
