    Interesting to see how this is a big deal in other countries. Can't speak for all of europe, but in Germany it's pretty common for the waiter/waitress to ask groups of people if they want to split the bill, which they will do no problem, because this tends to earn them a bigger tip in the end.
    Each person pays his stuff and pays his own small tip, it tends to add up quickly for them and everyone is happy.

      When I worked as a waiter I would automatically split everybody's bill for that reason. I would always do better with tips and wouldn't have to deal with people shorting me. That and if the party was really large I would do cash bar. But that was 20 years ago when everybody carried cash.

      Mairve is right. In Canada (and other countries), we have many industries go so far as to re-classify certain costs as after-the-fact add-ons. Like plane tickets. The fuel surcharges and taxes can sometimes DOUBLE the final price compared to the advertised fare. It's pretty nuts.

    • @irek1394
      @irek1394 8 лет назад +3

      It should be mandatory to put the end price of the product too. Im living in europe and when i hear about how many problems you have with something thats totally pointless I start to think you are masochists... Most people care only about the end price so why is that bulshit system you have in place?

    • @alexc7367
      @alexc7367 8 лет назад

      because Americans value transparicy and freedom when making purchases. they care what the product itself is worth and then like to see what the tax boils down to, this is why they aren't taxed out the ass like us europeans, because they have to calculate the amount of tax they are paying on every product and determine weather it is fair or not while us europeans(coming from a super taxed eu country) don't even realise how much tax we are really paying day to day. at the end of the month the gouvernment in my EU country makes 3 times the amount i make off of my back in VAT, wage taxes, road taxes, property taxes. Everything is taxed and people don't even realise what a huge chunk of your income that comes out to be at the end of the month because they are too lazy to press keys on a percentage calculator to see the truth yet spend 4 hours on facebook every day. Where does that 75% of my production go you might ask? well you know that new bench in the park? it costed 8 times it's real market value, but people don't know that, because they would rather not tire their head with senseless things like math and tax calculations

    If no app I prefer to get separated bills, because in my personal experience, we use to just split between all of us eating but wasn’t always fair because the ones eating way less ended up paying more for what they got. Some also use to like drinking wine while eating. Wine in restaurants is expensive (less expensive bottle was 65$ with average meal prices of 18$), so when we are 8, and only 3 out of the 8 end up drinking 2 bottles, it’s not fair for the rest to also pay for it. Now unless everybody agree to it and nobody mind paying that way then I guess it’s ok, but it could bring tensions sometimes, specially when the groupe gets bigger

    or you can ask the waiter or waitress to have the bill split, usually they can do that fairly easily. better yet ask to have separate bills from the very start and order in a circular motion with a clear start and end point to make it easy to remember each order taken.

    This reminds me of an uncle who ALWAYS had to go wash his hands after we all decide it's time to head out. He would conveniently disappear for 10 minutes
    It's always a tough choice unless you're very close friends or immediate family where it doesn't matter. I've personally been in 4 scenarios that really burned my ass, but what can you do.
    The first is going out where there is a couple that will count the two of them as 1 portion of the bill since "she didn't eat much" or whatever.
    The second situation is going out with a married couple where i get it this time, they get it next time. ...well, if everyone orders the same thing, THEY account for 2/3 of the cost every time and only pay back for 1/3 of the bill the next time.
    The third situation is another -you get it this time, we'll get it next time. Well, the time you are paying, they decide to eat out at a nice restaurant that puts you out $300 or $400. When it's their turn to pay, they invite your family over to their place where they picked up 2 grocery store deli chickens and other things for a total cost of $50 or less. rinse and repeat.
    The last situation, and this one was pretty specific, but it still burns my ass thinking about it. A bunch of us were over at someone's place after being out somewhere. I would guess there were 10 of us there and someone asked if anyone wants to order a pizza. 3 of us wanted it, and the rest said they weren't interested. The 3 of us ordered and paid $45 for 2 pizzas. You know what happens when they arrived...the rest of the herd suddenly changed their mind about not being hungry. I ended up with 1 slice of pizza that cost me $15 because some of the non-payers took more than 1 slice on their first go at it.

    • @majiccouly
      @majiccouly 3 года назад +1

      The pizza part... it wasn’t exactly the same but it’s about pizza. I am from a French Caribbean island, I went to Quebec for studying and we use to do pizza night from time to time. I use to be vegetarian at that time and the only one in a group of 6. We always took 4 giant 18 inches pizza. With taxes and tips it went up to 90-95$, so when you split equally it’s around 15-16$ each. What was the problem then? I’m the bigger guy and at that time I could easily eat half of an 18 inch pizza on my own, specially the veggie one with no meat, felt easier to eat for me. Doesn’t sound that bad hey? Here is the thing that bordered me, they always ask me with surprised faces how I could be so big and not eat meat at all, or I could, enjoy food with no meet. But then I never knew why but when they saw me eating the vege pizza, they all felt like they had to try it. In the end I ended up with one slice for 16$ andthe worst part for me was that they never finished the ones with meat because of the vege pizza (couldn’t finish them myself cause when eating meat I use to get sick and hard stomach aches for days). So one day I told them to stop doing that because and it wasn’t fair (had to sit for 15 min with bills details and explanation for them to fully understand, I was the first full vegetarian person they ever met, specially on daily basis) , and we continue the pizza nights with 3 18 inches pizza for them that they split and one 14 inch for me that I paid alone...

    I won't lie this makes me very happy (borderline a tad smug) to live in the UK - while splitting the bill does often end up with these issues. Since we don't need to take into account for tax (and often tip depending on the place you go to - or at least that tip being rounded to a nice easy number that can be split separately) I've noticed it's a lot harder to make mistake on bills - after visiting for 3 months in the US I swear I think I spent more on overpaying my meal-bills (due to my very obvious inexperience with the ever fluctuating tip/tax system) than I did on some flights between states!
    Honestly, the only times I see bills not split reasonably fairly is when people over here are just too socially awkward to correct that one person who made a mistake.

  • @exterminar
    @exterminar 8 лет назад +3

    I really liked this video except you could have expanded it by going into how to calculate what the tax rate is (many cities in the US have varying rates) which in turn could be used by every individual to add to their bill plus the rate that they would want to use for a tip, unless the tip is already included (sometimes large parties already include the 18% tip).

  • @heirkraft
    @heirkraft 8 лет назад +1

    Servers use seat numbers. We ring in items and then we associate everything with where you are. Makes everything easier to split. Best thing you can do in a large party is don't play musical chairs

  • @littlegoobie
    @littlegoobie 4 года назад +2

    in my experience, this doesn't happen if they're good friends. most of them will over contribute plus their own tip, the final credit card payer can come close to paying nothing or even make money. They don't make money though because they'll pay their own fair amount also and the bulk of the extra goes to tip, where it should be.

  • @Chrisopia
    @Chrisopia 8 лет назад +1

    Firstly, we dont have to worry about the tax because it's already included... and we normally ask for separate bills if there are more than 5 of us. Some places, we are able to go to the till with the waitress / cashier and pick which items we bought off the list and pay for them individually.
    Sometimes, if we're in a hurry, just split the bill equally, unless someone got something extra expensive...

  • @rozwynn2349
    @rozwynn2349 2 года назад +2

    I know for me asking for separate checks works best. When I go out to eat I generally just drink water and don't get alcoholic beverages so equally spending a check would out me in the loosing seat everytime. 😂

  • @RamaSivamani
    @RamaSivamani 5 лет назад +1

    If your splitting the bill equally that should only happen if it is willingly suggested by the person most disadvantaged. In the example you gave where one of the people only ordered a salad and water for $12 and an even split would have come to 34 then if the person who ordered the salad is the one to willingly be the one at the table to suggest splitting the bill evenly because he doesn't mind paying extra than that's fine.

    When everyone pays the bill separately it really hurts the servers. It takes longer to collect payment and it hurts the restaurants service, especially if it's really busy. If the restaurant isn't busy I suppose this would be fine. If you are going to pay the bill yourself just take the hit once in a while.

    • @mjs28s
      @mjs28s 8 лет назад +5

      "If you are going to pay the bill yourself just take the hit once in a while."
      Nope. Just bring enough cash with you when you dine with the ass wipes that want to split the ticket. Make sure that the cash includes five $1 bills, several $5 bills, maybe a $10 bill or two and a $20 bill. Have a little more on the side for enough to cover your tip. That way you can just put your own food cost down and let everyone else "split" the rest. After they are all done figuring everything out then drop your own tip on the table.
      Cash is king when you have those that think my lower cost meat should subsidize their higher cost experience.

      Couple of things: if you have a closer friend in the group, chat with them ahead of time. They may know how this particular place works. Also: take a look at tables around you, particularly ones that look closer to being done (i.e. dessert is on the table, or empty plates) and see what they do. You'll almost always see someone paying every few minutes. If they go up somewhere, or if someone comes to their table, you should be able to see it fairly easily. Failing all that, before everyone orders, you can go to the restroom and on your way there ask a server or bartender. They'll be happy to let you know. Good luck!

    How about communicating ahead of time about if you're splitting the bill or paying the full amount to avoid confusion. I mean simple as that. I personally don't mind paying for the full tab when I am financially able to do so. But the bill would be the same regardless if it is split or not correct?

  • @RamaSivamani
    @RamaSivamani 7 лет назад

    If you are going to split the amount of a bill evenly then it should be the person who is the most disadvantaged that makes that decision. For example let's say I go out to dinner with two friends and my meal is roughly 15 dollars and my other two friends meals are roughly 25 dollars each. This comes out to a total of 65 which is just over 21 dollars each. In this case if I am the one to suggest splitting the bill evenly because I am willing to be a little generous then cool no worries because I am the most disadvantaged in this situation by splitting the bill evenly. If I am not okay with splitting the bill evenly then we each should pay our fair share for what we ate.

    Splitting equally is the most equitable, as it is a better approximation of the benefits received by each person. You are going out to eat with a group for the benefits you receive from group company.
    Also, this addresses the challenge that many have with calculating tips, or the moral opposition.
    Asking for separate checks risks getting poor service.

    Lol how's that.... Are you ... "FORCED" to give tips everywhere every single time you consume something in any shop?? Or how does it work??
    Here on Spain (and I believe most of the world) tipping is something the customer decides if his attendant has deserved during his experience, if he does nothing special for you...if you don't see him/her very nice person and dedicated to help and make every single customer a bit more confortable and happy....why the hell would do you have to give ANY tip to him/her???
    And the tip is a fixed % over your consumption?
    God If some day on the future I visit any place in north america I'll definitely plan very well my daily schedule I wouldn't be willing to spend 1 month randomly gifting my money to (probably) at least 50% of useless, careless, unprofessional workers who already have their pay per hour and do NOTHING to deserve any extra reward for their work time.

      Same in Germany and France, service is included. I think it also lifts off some weight of the waitors' shoulders, because they don't need to be extra nice or fake nice to get tipped better, which is like minimalist prostitution. And they also don't bring you the bill 30 seconds after you finished your meal, making you leave and leave the table to new customers (I know that this is not a waitor thing but asked by the restaurant, but it's a very unpleasent way of having lunch or dinner, dear Americans.).

      Canadian here. I don't know if it's the case in Europe, but here wages are lower for waiters and waitresses. I live in Quebec, and the minimum wage for waiters is 9,45$ while the general minimum wage is 11,25$; I do think it would be better if everyone was given its fair share

      Tipping is 15% of what you ordered before taxe... but since everyone carries CC ou debit card, you end up paying a little more because the machine does it on the price with taxes.

    I just use straight up math with a calculator. Everybody sits and talks for at least 10 minutes after we get the bill anyways, so there's plenty of time for me to do my thing. I add up the costs of what each person ordered, to get everybody's subtotal. Divide those into the total subtotal to get te percentage of the total bill each person owes. Now I just take the total bill after tax and tip with each person's percentage and boom, everyone's total. Simple enough.

    Simple rule:
    Everybody orders the same dish (like going for a pizza) = everybody pays the same = split the bill equally
    Everybody orders different stuff = either get separate bills or pay for your own + little tax to not be pennyhoarder.*
    *this requires to live in country which includes tax in bill.

      rarely works because on person will be ordering pitchers of beer, while another drinks water or tea.

    Tips is a barbaric way to make the people in the restaurant business accept working for a lower pay. In many countries tip is not customary, and is often just given to particularly friendly or skilled waiters. Neither is tax excluded, it's often included in every part of the order. It's far more common with a customer having to pay tax than not, and by simply using the tax rate written on the bill, you can easily deduct the amount if appropriate. Why is the US so set on excluding tax from their list prices, and why are the people in the restaurant business accepting slaving for an unreliable income?
    This makes splitting a bill far less prone to underestimates since the whole price is right there, black on white on the bill.

    An option often used when going out with friends is similar to option 2. Except when the bill comes we all agree upon a % amount for time. Then add the tip amount plus tax amount, then divide by the number of people. Afterwards everyone goes and calculates their portion of dinner and adds the predetermined amount to cover tax and tip. That one one one ends up paying less than what the should.

    my friends always divide the tax equally after everyone paid their meal price.
    Of course they used calculator but apparently meal price*service%*gst% is abit too hard :S

      its 8% tax here in southern california. 15-22% gratuity is normal. You don't go out to eat everyday, It should be a good experience and your server should be knowledgeable and attentive. If not, then 10% is a way of showing a very bad job.

    A Third option that works well for small groups of people that are somewhat close (hence eat together from time to time), is agreeing that the bill will be split in equal parts at the beginning of the meal. Saver everyone 5 minutes of deliberation and stress and tends to be balanced out over time.
