@@kktan3153 in Ross defense, this is not the first time that they are going out to a restaurant and I'm kinda sure from Ross' character that at the first and second time he'd be the one to ask whether everyone's fine with splitting the bill and the others probably shrugged it off and said "yeah its fine"
Therefore for him saying that he thought its not an issue: he cant read minds, the others didnt say anything
Yes they are good friends and Ross should have noticed that they were uncomfortable with it: some just dont notice that due to circumstances. And you cant say that Ross isnt caring, he definitely is.

because a lot of time in restaurant people will get their meal plus alcohol (bottle of wine, aperitive, digestive, etc.). instead of just paying exactly what you order people often just divide equally since usually the difference between what you have to pay and the mean isn't that big. It's also easier for the waiter/waitress. Normally, people ask at the end of the meal: "should we split equally?" And if someone doesn't want to it's no big deal.

Because it is easier. Normally speaking, if you go out with your friend, you all pick a place where everyone can reasonably afford, so the bill can be split and everyone is okay paying their share.

It doesn't matter what you think you're worth, you're gonna be paid less than that and you have to accept it or starve. Everyone in this show work for their money, not just Chandler, and Rachel shouldn't pay $33 for a salad. The other three were inconsiderate. You're naive.

@Gaming with Ag and Ac So, you just don't know what you're talking about, then? This is early in the series. Rachel hasn't been working for years, Joey hasn't gotten on his soap opera yet, and you are conflating the seasons. What happens later has no bearing on this scene.

So the total bill is $168, and if I had to guess what everyone owes (considering Ross, Monica and Chandler also appear to have wine and the rest have water):
    Ross: $48
    Monica: $48
    Chandler: $38
    Rachel: $8
    Phoebe: $10
    Joey: $16
So for the original proposition of $28 each, Ross and Monica are probably saving at least $20 each, Chandler is probably saving about $10, and the rest owe two to three times as much for their food is worth. The very first day they all went to the grocery store and bought tons of crap that I had no intention of eating. it was hundreds of dollars and they expected everyone to chip in and I had not budgeted for that. I paid a minimal amount and made sure i ate none of it. Last day $14 left - just enough for a $7 Moracan ring souvounier from Epcot's Moraco and a hot dog. Both my sisters show up and each want to bite of my hotdog. I bought the hot dog because we were meeting for lunch at a restaurant I couldn't afford so I was trying to eat ahead of time. I hated to say no so i let them each have a bite. they didn't understand I was out of money and that was my only food for the day. I ate the hotdog as we were waiting in line and when it we went inside I told him I would pass on any more to eat because I had already eaten the hotdog. So they ordered lunch and my little sister said to me that she thought it would be nice if I paid for my older sisters lunch since she had paid for something for the whole group to enjoy earlier. I don't understand how they didn't get that I had almost no money that whole trip and at this point maybe have one or two dollars left. Every time they stopped for ice cream or a snowcone or a snack, my son and I would split a Coke. It was so obvious I was on a budget. People with money just really don't understand what it feels like to not have money. To really and truly not have money. Or they simply don't notice.

Well it is awkward when half your group can afford anything they want to do, and the other half of your group is struggling to make ends meet. The rich half wants to do things that cost a lot of money, thinking nothing of it, while the broke half hesitates and struggles to speak up about it. Yes, pay for what you consume of course. But it is probably best to pick activities within everyone's means.

    • @henrypeters5291
      @henrypeters5291 6 лет назад +8

Yeah but it shouldn't be something that is just brought up randomly at the end of a dinner. There are nice places to go to eat that don't cost $160 for six people. Just say, "Don't you think that's expensive?" and that's it.

I say in advance if I can't afford. There's nothing uncomfortable about money. If you can't afford to go somewhere, tell that person in private that your financial situation is not as good as theirs and you can't afford to go. If they want to meet for a drink or two before or after, you're free for that. I even do this with other things: like the movies. One time a friend wanted to go to the movies to see a movie that I wouldn't even watch for free. I never go to the movies unless it's one that I REALLYYYYY wanted to see. I told her I was not going to come cause I don't want to spend money on something that I don't care about (I didn't say exactly that way but this was the idea). She was mad but she was not the one paying my bills, rents and groceries. Sometimes you have to be pratical.

I always found it kind of hilarious that Ross was portrayed as having at least a moderate amount of money at this point. Anyone who works in academia knows that a newly minted doctorate holder like him, even if he wasn't drowning in student debt, would be making almost nothing - ESPECIALLY in a field like paleontology. Joey would probably be making more than him as a struggling bit actor.

People saying " they eat at Monica all the time though"...Okay, but the restaurant they imply they go to is more expensive in the end than the grocery you will pay, even for the exact same food.
And Monica would be super sad or go ballistic if anyone else even try to be the one who provide food. There are multiple episodes that hints on it, and a whole episode that is centered about how she is sad to not be the hostess of the group and try hard to be again. Monica LOVES to make food. Even for neighbours she doesn't know. I garantee you, even if any of the other 5 wanted to instead make food regularly to make up for it,or whatever, she will NOT be grateful at all. She will just be stressed and disappointed. She doesn't want people to make it, nor to pay for it either when its at her home. She just want to be known as a great provider and cook ( see the neighbour episode with the candies)

Probably because the richer ones had already bought tickets to Hootie and the Blowfish and planned a dinner. It would end up being a bit of a disappointment.

We went out for our neighbours birthday, that was hosted by her friend. We were invited last minute and didn’t really like Japanese food and it was in a complex of other little eateries so we bought our food from elsewhere and we ate in the outside garden area with everyone else. Anyway bill comes and it’s massive. She tells Birthday girl and her boyfriend/daughter that we will pay for them. They’d dunk bottle after bottle of wine, while we drank water and bought food there when we hadn’t. She was a real bully about it too. My husband didn’t know what to do and paid it. Luckily our neighbours gave us some money when we got home.
It was so awkward, our neighbours are like no we will pay our bill and she’s like don’t be silly it’s your birthday ....., blah blah blah.
No every time they ask us out I ask if xxxx is going to be there.
