Any chance you can compare M2 Max vs M3 Max?
So refreshing to listen to someone who's head doesn't bounce around the room with jumpy video cuts. Thank you.
“But we’re still getting 230fps which is not too bad” lmfao I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone describe anything as over 100fps as not too bad 😂 I like his videos but this guy must be unbearable to game with “it’s only running 60 fps! I’m outta here!”
He literally says 60fps is alright for him.
I mean my whole i was playing at less than 60fps 😅. I feel the same as ive buyed the m3mAx 16inch for programming purpose but it feela good to know that i could game as much will mostly wow. And wouldve love to see the test on it but since iys native i think it will run smoothly
He doesn’t care, but if 60fps isn’t your 1% minimum or less, it’s not worth it.
Dude, shut up.
I guess he’s saying that cuz we’re getting this on a 1000 dollar plus macbook so yeah
Geekerwan tested M3 Max against some windows laptops and got these results.
1080p Baldur’s Gate III
i7 13700H and RTX 4060: 67 FPS
M2 Ultra: 83 FPS
M2 Max: 85 FPS
i9 13900HX and RTX 4080: 86 FPS
M3 Max: 101 FPS
Baldur’s Gate III 1440p
i7 13700H and RTX 4060: 56 FPS
M2 Max: 58 FPS
M2 Ultra: 63 FPS
M3 Max: 77 FPS
i9 13900HX and RTX 4080: 78 FPS
Baldur’s Gate III 4K
M2 Max: 30 FPS

M3 Max: 40 FPS
M2 Ultra: 54 FPS
i9 13900HX and RTX 4080: 71 FPS
Cyberpunk 2077 4K DLSS/FSR (not native on Mac)
M2: 4 FPS
M3: 5 FPS
M2 Max: 14 FPS
M3 Max: 19 FPS
i7 13700H and RTX 4060: 20 FPS
M2 Ultra: 25 FPS
i9 13900HX and RTX 4080: 36 FPS
interesting, thanks for putting it all together
So, pretty damn decent then for a Mac!
That's pretty interesting. For CPU bound cases (e.g. BG3 at 1080p) the M3 Max is the fastest tested system. For GPU bound cases, the RTX 4080 is ~50% faster.
@@pynchon9 Another interesting thing is that M2 Ultra despite having double the CPU and GPU cores of M2 Max is not really performing any better than M2 Max at 1080p and 1440p
@@Jamieibrahimm Yes, that is very interesting.
And 4 FPS is very cuute.
The video I’ve waited to see and it didn’t disappoint, apart from the fact we don’t have many mac games to test in the first place. Would have been nice to see more emulation performance in the video though but still, 10/10 man - thanks so much. I hope RUclips is paying you well and YES I am a RUclips premium member.
All Emulator works greats already on my M2 Max 38 cores i had, But i had a good opportunity to return it when the M3 max was released, and so i can say , there is a difference, for example some games like the Motorstorm ones had some issue with just playing smoothly the intro FMV on the M2 max, but on the M3 Max 40 cores, no issue, smooth as butter, you can play any Older games, like Jet set radio future on xbox , dreamcast, to switch and PS3 .. PS4 starts to have some emulators on mac like Spine, but not a lot of games works cos it is still a beta. but for emulation and not Triple A gaming for the future , you can buy a refurb M2 max and be okay for a long time , even with current Triple A , but the M3 Max is way more into GPU power ...
its fake video, im have M3 Max 128 gig with crossover and have only. 50% of his fps
@@JunkyVR are you sure you are using the same setting as he does ? goes he often plays at 1440p not native resolution ... like a ton of Pc gamers. and to get the best results be sure to get the latest rev. of Crossover who uses Ray tracing and Mesh shading and other tools from Apple Game porting toolkit.
Been waiting for this one, thanks so much Andrew!
I am always excited to see you post a mac gaming related video. Its exciting to see us get a little closer to a reality of native mac gaming!
its fake video becpouse im have more poferfull mac and have much less fps in evry game
@@JunkyVR this is the M3 max with 40 cores, at the time of writing this, it is the most powerful apple chip in existence. So, you don't have a "more powerful mac".
good that you mentioned Most powerful "Apple chip" or somebody wouldve been triggered. @@tony_0088
@@JunkyVR lmao you got absolutely rekt
@@tony_0088 you are retard right? CPU cores for games?
What a video. THANK YOU and Happy New Year Andrew.. May 2024 bring you continued good health and only joy. Cheers!
I respect you for doing that pc segment
You should add SnowRunner to the list of games tested on macOS now that it has been released for this system; it is really graphically impressive. I also think Tropico 6 and Cities: Skylines would be great games to test.
SnowRunner is dope
Been a while since ive heard someone mention Tropico 6 online... My favourite video game series of all time
Impressed by all the native games, everything seems to be above 60fps which is fine for me. No complaints with the performance, just wish there were more native games
Over the next decade I have no doubt that will happen, I think Apple very much do intend on breaking into the gaming market, I think they are just going to do it slowly so they get everything right
If there were more popular games ported to Apple SoC, i would seriously consider getting a M3 Max Studio when it arrives. The amount of time i spend in city building games and RPG games would justify the cost. Its such a capable SoC when games are optimised for it.
If you get the latest crossover with the latest cxpatcher while running through steam can be a capable gaming machine.
Playing Resident evil 2-3 remake like a dream.
Thx for the video
Well with CP77 at the medium preset stock as is, at 1440P and both DLSS and FSR disabled, I get between 130 - 150 FPS running the game's own benchmark on a 4090m.
So I get 35% better performance average than a Mac going through 4 translation layers LOL. And just my GPU is using double the power of the MacBook's entire power output. That's a ROFL for that one. This is absolute proof that ARM, watt for watt, is way more powerful than X86.
People, if game devs can get behind them, MacBooks are the future of portable gaming. See the thing is, the battery life and performance ON battery and the overall noise levels and power consumption even when plugged in and at 100% load are outstanding. My MSI laptop sounds like a Concorde jet at full tilt... I bet you if CP77 was fully ARM native it would be very close to the 4090m if not just as good.. in a laptop where the total power output combined is less than HALF of *just* the mobile Nvidia 4090. My laptop pushes close to 300W lol with CPU and GPU maxed.
I am actually more and more shocked the more I test, I expected at least 2-3x the FPS. I have to hand it to Apple, I am a bit floored. This is coming from someone who left the Apple Ecosystem in March 2020 after being exclusively Apple from 2005-2020, my main reason being I wanted to do some serious gaming and before I was only using the Mac for my music studio. If somehow, in a year or two from now, translation layers improve to the point where I will be able to play my entire library including my old games, I WOULD switch back. I'd be crazy not to, and go back to Logic Pro instead of Cubase which I more or less don't enjoy much on Windows.
Very nice. Might get me one of these. It does better than my gaming laptop I currently have. I need a laptop for work and some gaming and this looks like it will do nicely.
Can you do a video where you crank up all the graphic settings, playing at native resolution with upscaling off
Great! I thought Snowrunner would be included as well though.
Andrew I think it would be really good to also do some testing at max native resolution.
have you had a chance to check same CPU/GPU configuration but in 14"?
I'm curious how the weaker thermals will affect performance (not just short term peak load, but a usual game session)
actively running fan gives almost same performance
Running Cyberpunk 2077 with around 40fps on a M1 Pro and 32 GB in the 14'' layout. Fan runs but no as heavy as with other games and the game itself planes very well on medium presets
can you do a 4k benchmark for these games?
Andrew, I have the same mbp that you showed in the video (48gb/40 gpu cores), but I am not seeing the option for 1440 wide (the closet res is 1728:1117), any idea why? Also, the Metal Performanc Hud indicates 0.4 not 1.1, how do I force GPTK 1.1 when I launch Baldur's Gate 3? Thanks in advance for you recommendations.
Is there any particular reason you didn't test our Ultra-Quality FSR for most games, and no benchmarks for Native resolution or 4K gaming? Most of these games feel pointless testing Quality vs Balanced FSR in 1440p when you are already getting more frames than you would need for the majority of gamers.
What was the noise level like? On my M1 Max, when gaming the fans would be audiable but very low. How do fans levels sound when gaming on the M3 Max?
It would be great to test both Metro Exodus and Fort Solis which have been specifically optimized for Mac. They are excellent games with stunning visuals. They run beautifully on my M2 Pro on 1440p high settings.
have you had the ray traycing on in cyberpunk and have you been running the expansion?
can you A/B FSR off and on with all other variables equal? i think many would want to see how macs perform without ai upscaling
I imagine M4 Max creepily staring into the window as he did these benchmarks thinking..."Soon"...
Hi Andrew. Thanks for your awesome videos. Are you able to test "RUST" on the latest M3 Max?
What’s the performance without FSR? FSR makes things look terrible.
Hello, nice video. Witch software did he use to see fps, ram used etc on top right ?
I would like to ask you to make the following video on how to set up and play Minecraft and Minecraft-RTX on MacBooks with M1 L2 and L3 processors
That was a fast one. Great video, keep it up 👍
Can u try these games with the m1 also? I want to see how it plays on the “low end” macs
Could you do a new tour video of how to open hud to show frame rate, because now most of the games are playing through d3dmetal, not dxvk, I couldn’t use the same way in the tutorial to open hud, which is really struggle for me😢
I'm picking up mine with the 14 core cpu 30 core gpu.. The feels lol
Do you know when Baldur's Gate 3 will be available in the APP store? Thanks!
Been done already . Cheers
Hey there
Could you run probably NX or solid works for big assemblys? The graphics should me more than good enough now
amazing, really cool to see macbooks being able to play AAA games in this age
Mac Gaming Looks Promising. Hope it get into the crowd soon.
Hi Andrew, can you try running guild wars 2 again please on m3 max and m3 pro on world vs world where there are zerg fighting another zerg? I used to have an m1 pro base model before and running in code weavers it was really good in non-wvw maps, but during zerg vs zerg it will drop to 8-15fps and basically unplayable...now curious with the higher single core score and how this performs wit the gpk/code weavers. Willing to go back to mac if they have optimised it for wvw.
Wish someone made a test of the 16" M3 Pro as every video I find is the 14" model
What are the fan speeds and temperatures for the setup? I have a 14" non-decked out max and the fans goes to 5k rpm always
Do you have an answer for your question? Maybe from other people…? Thank you
Well I can't match CP77 settings to compare since you have the statistics display covering all the RT info on the right. Was RT on or OFF?
I have planned to buy the smaller M3Max with 14CPU and 30GPU Cores as 14“ - do you think this one is much slower then the big one?
I wonder how does the M1 Max / Pro fair today? Most of the benchmarks I’m finding was tested 2 years ago upon release. But if there has been optimizations over time especially with CrossOver, how does it perform today in games?
my m1 max plays everything on ultra.
@@MA-ik7ysBetter than M2 pro+M3 pro?
Please try Ray tracing in cyberpunk. How does it perform ?
Like everything else, that is not a 4090 gpu like crap.
1440p in bg3 why u didn’t test full resolution? On my m2 pro base model 1440p got 60fps all time. I would like to see full resolution on ultra :(
we really care about OverWatch 2 hopes you will always included in the games tests. I really appreciate your work. Thank You.
I did Overwatch 2 on the M3 Pro video, works great!
😂😂😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂😂
Does ray tracing not work in games like Cyberpunk?
Can you try 4k gaming?
I feel like the really important games would be the multiplayer titles rather than single player as that would reach the largest audience, I do enjoy a good solo title but I much more frequent games like, league of legends, WoW, Naraka bladepoint Fortnite, Cod. If the silicon does these well then i think they may be more appealing
Give video on parallels desktop gaming too
Could you test native or Rosetta games with Low Power mode for performance and how much battery you would get? (or just what the total system draw is, you can kinda extrapolate from that)
Alternatively, you could run games at maybe Medium ~800p with a frame cap of 60 (or Vsync, but it would go to 120Hz on non 13" MBPs unless you adjust it down)?
Just wondering how good gaming on battery is, wondering if Macbooks can do a better job than handhelds (if you get good battery you could increase the brightness to make it somewhat usable outdoors, certainly with forced HDR brightness, at the cost of battery)?
Could you try world of warcraft in Raid? Or do anyone know someone already done that?
Could someone tell me on the 30 core version of the gpu on m3 max how much the difference on the fps is in cyberpunk 2077 vs the 40 core gpu? Thanks!
What’s the best controller setup for windows?
5:50 sildurs is one of the least demanding shaders :D
try continuum High/Ultra preset
Does anyone know whether the Steam version of Diablo IV works with crossover as well?
With Crossover 24 can I install Cyberpunk 2077 without having to mess wirh installing GPTK?
7:13, the scene looks weirdly old gen less polygons.
can you make a comparison between parallels and crossover?
do you know mac gaming / crossover performance has been fixed on m1/m2 ULTRA? was always worse than MAX in the past?...
Thank you so much for testing Minecraft. I’ve only had a Windows computer, but I’ve wanted to switch to Mac. I don’t play many games except for Minecraft. The exact spec you have is what I was looking into as I also need to run a server while I play and this looks perfect. Thank you!
Should I enable ESync or MSync in Crossover 23.6? With CXPatcher?
Interesting!!
I have problems running games via crossover om my m3 Max. It stutters and the Sound has this wobbly effect. Can someone help :)
Can you try some simulation games like beam ng with ultra graphics settings on m3 max based model
So I currently have m2 air and looking to upgrade to macbook pro due to my workload - web development with webstorm and docker - this requires a lot of ram which my current system does not have. I do wanna play games time to time but cant decide between m3 pro(higher variant) or m3 max base variant
Of course M3 Max!
how can I start a game over through crossover?
Will the M3 max be able to handle Roblox on maxed out settings or should I wait for the M3 ultra?
where are these games? because there are no normal games in the app store
hitting 240fps isn’t pointless though, as it can output that onto 240hz external screen
Did you test on 30 gpu core or 40 gpu core version?
how can I setup these games on my M3 Pro
World of Warcraft Retail? I'm waiting for the Mac Studio M3 Max or maybe even the Ultra. I believe that the Max maxed out it's enough and for less than $2600 it's a no brainer.
Man it's damn shame you didn't cover ryujinx on the m3 max...
grid legends for m chip Macs got realse date got announced for December 12
Can you test NCAA FOOTBALL 14 on RPCS3?
How does this compare not to a pc gaming desktop but to an unplugged pc gaming laptop? just to compare apples to apples
did u use crossover to play diablo 4?
Please test BG3 again, apparently Patch 5 improved stuff a ton
How long can this game until it runs out of battery?
wish we could see how the m3 max cpu did with a 4090 gpu
A macbook playing Cyberpunk? Unbelievable! Can you tell me how much the fans are getting loud and if the game throttles?
hell yea
60FPS is all you need. So you can game on a Mac. Fuck buying a separate gaming PC.
60 fps it's bullsgit
Nah man, can't go back to 60fps after experiencing 120.
I tried a 14/30 M3 Max 16 and was disappointed with the amount of fan noise when doing intensive tasks. I’m OK with trading performance for the M3 Pro’s quieter acoustics.
Very interesting. You would think the 16" could handle the base Max without being too noisy. Sad to hear it can't!
Is there an example of what intensive tasks you where doing? Still never going to buy an M3 Max but still curious :)
Recommend engaging low power mode, it may not 100% solve the issue but in theory less power -> less thermals.
@@IFone456 Cinebench, large-scale Adobe Photoshop and XD work, and gaming using the Rosetta 2 version of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. All of these tasks go more slowly on a 12 CPU/18 GPU/18 GB memory M3 Pro 14, but the laptop is substantially quieter.
@@Crazyblox Recommend you stop and think about the implications of spending $3500 on a laptop just to break its kneecaps by artificially limiting its performance.
This will make for an interesting topic when the M3 Max Mac Studio arrives whether it would be worth it to get a Studio over a a similarly specced gaming PC for productivity (and even games somewhat since GPT has made running Windows games incredibly easy) as I did a build comparison and the similarly specced PC was only cheaper by a hundred dollars
Probably depends on what you're doing. 3D work? The Mac won't come close to the PC because of the RTX 4090. Engineering? PC. Video editing? Mac. Unless it is extremely heavy 8K R3D, in which case I don't know. Software development? Mac. ML model training? PC.
@@_shreyash_anand running local llms ? Macs really does the job so good
Even if it were incredibly easy to run Windows games through GPT, they won't run incredibly well. Game on a Mac if you've got it, but I wouldn't buy one with the idea you'll have a comparable gaming experience to Windows.
@@teh_hunterer You sure about that because Cyberpunk and the PlayStation games ran perfectly through GPT
@@DrAnimePhD no games run perfectly through multiple translation layers
Can we expect a M1 Max vs M2 Max vs M3 Max video from you?
Curious of the difference in performance between the 30 core version M3 max
Yes, me too. How much less fps we get?
Have 2022 MacBook Air M2 with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage - any chance I can play CyberPunk 2077 or Diablo 4? Resident Evil: Village plays great on it!
Diablo 4 via CrossOver. For Cyberpunk 2077 has the M2 not enough performance
This isn't just impressive this is fucking insane performance for a mac, I genuinely didn't know it was this powerful, god damn apple has a chance of monopolizing gaming in the future
Seems on par or slightly above a RTX 3070 (the native ports). Impressive for an APU, but less impressive when you factor the disgusting prices of upgrading components with Apple.
I guess it´s a good time to look for M1 Max second hand as many people will be ditching those now and I could use a laptop like that, for gaming my RTX 4080 rig does the job.
It’s a laptop 😂 not a desktop pc
@@RunForPeace-hk1cu man I'm glad you told me. I wouldn't have guessed otherwise.
On some games and depending if natively run it's almost a 4080 mobile or a tad slower. I know the mobile is slower than a desktop equivalent but we have to remember it's comparing to it's windows counterpart. I'd say very damn impressive for an APU regardless of their pricing models. I think they should made the gpu 48 cores and that would've made it above a 4080 mobile and inbetween a 4090-4080 mobile. If apple at least didn't solder the SSD's on it would benefit them so much and the customer.
An argument can be made for RAM being part of the SOC unified architecture with some positives.
@@denisruskin348 well you did try to compare a 4080 desktop to a laptop 💻 😂😂😂
@@GlobalWave1 you just want to buy a cheap ssd and upgrade it yourself .
Not because Apple soldered the ssd 😂
I’ve never had a ssd failed on me unless you try and use the ssd like a server workload
If you really want to upgrade your laptop, just sell your old one and buy another one
M1max to M3Max
Problem solved and you get a nice speed increase .
Hey Andrew. Love your videos. Very well put together. Curious if you found a setting that consistently deals with the black screen bug you mentioned here in Cyberpunk 2077. I have an almost maxed out M3 Max (64GB Ram) and I'm running into that same black screen bug myself. I've tinkered with various graphics settings and can't seem to fix it. I'm running MSYNC and D3DMetal, all medium settings (many of which I've tried switching to low to fix the problem). High or low resolution mode doesn't seem to make a difference. Perhaps it's a translation issue? Any tips?
It’s a bug with FSR.
Thank for the response@@Andytizer. Another question if you don't mind. You seem to always have an FPS counter on screen no matter what game it is you're playing (and therefore what architecture it's built on). Are you using a universal monitoring software that works with any active application? Or perhaps you're using different ones depending on the game. Can you point me in the right direction?
@@seamus_o_ra I can help you. It's native. Just open terminal before launching any game on Mac OS and type /bin/launchctl setenv MTL_HUD_ENABLED 1
Thank you @@arfmf
set "color precision" option i Cyberpunk 2077 to Medium, rest you can leave as you want. This will make "black screen" appears less frequently and game is playable (it's still there, of course)
Andrew is this the 14 or 16 inch? I am just wondering if the 14", if the 16" might have better thermal headroom.
The 14 inch overheats.
This is what I mean, he wasn't showing us temps@@makandalp
I'm furious, I have an Intel MacBook Pro which I love relaxing with and doing creative work using software not available on Windows and a custom build gaming PC from 2020 which I love sitting at my desk and gaming on but No Mans Sky on the M3 Max literally looks smoother and snappier than it does on my PC 😭😂 RIP my bank, I'm gonna collide my worlds when more games eventually come to Mac
Andrew play try out black desert online. Hope it can run with mac. 😭
Better than most PC(s)
So let me get this clear. You said crossover is still in beta does that mean more games are going to come?
yes, Apple Gaming Toolkit also
