My hw is macbook pro M1 (2020) and the most recent update of Sonoma is installed I didn’t find any information about this issue or any solutions, so I’ll be very thankful if you drop me some advice
Thanks for the tutorial. Very easy to set up. Sadly, doesn't work with the older games I want to run (as you explained). The state of Mac gaming on Apple Silicon is depressing, tbh. Anything non-native has so many stipulations, and I don't blame Apple directly for this because these games weren't made for ARM, but I do think seeing as how the M1 chip came out over three years ago, it's annoying that Apple hasn't come up with a streamlined solution (because that's usually what Apple is good at). Linux in 2015 was legitimately in a better place for gaming than Mac is now in 2024.
For me Apple gaming died when they stopped to support x86 apps still in the Intel era… before that, it was super easy to run most part of the games and there were a lot of optimized ports available
i've tried both whiskey and crossover and surprisingly crossover which is paid gives twice the frame rates in every game so i made a decision and bought yearly subscription to crossover and i think it was worth it
I’m glad that there’s more and more support for gaming on Mac OS. But I’ll just stick to always having a custom pc built on the side for gaming purposes. Currently have my m3 pro MacBook 14” for productivity/work and my pc with i7 13700k and 4070 ti super for gaming @1440p
Not really, Code Weavers (makers of crossover) help to make GPTK. Crossover supports, older, direct x and Das has much wider compatibility, and also more configurability even when using the GPTK engine for DX12.
You guys are not totally doomed, I did find out if you use parallels desktop 15 on Big Sur you can in fact run pc games on a windows vm using your dedicated gpu using gpu pass through thanks to parallels desktop.
I didn't even see the menu for Rosetta but maybe that's due to updates to Whiskey not sure though. I am running a M3 Pro with 36gb of ram and currently on the Sequoia BETA 2 so we shall see how this all works but the instructions were super straightforward. So thank you. I am trying FFIIV Intergrade first lol.
I see your point. I’m a Mac user since 2015 but occasionally I want or need an application for work or leisure (game) that is only available for Windows and in those cases I run them through Parallels Desktop, which works just fine in most cases. If one of your main use cases is gaming I would not recommend a Mac before a Windows based system.
@@dmug I have the base model MacBook Air 15in. It has 8gb of ram and 256gb of storage. I paid almost $1400 out the door. I have a gamming laptop that is a beast. High refresh rate display and 16gb of ram. Along with 1tb of storage. I paid $850 for it. It is a no brainer for gaming. MacBooks are ok but for the price point, I don't think so. It is my only and last MacBook I will ever buy. Especially after I see the prices for the MacBook M3's. Those prices are insane.
What if you’re just a casual gamer, maybe you play one or two games, and you play them once in a while, when you have a little free time. Mac users are usually not big gamers, so having an option to play a couple of games that interest you without buying a whole new machine DOES make a lot of sense - Maybe you’re just thinking about it for your POV and no one else’s. If you’re into gaming then yes buy a Windows Gaming PC, but if your not and you like macOS then this is an option.
I can’t stand a laptop that isn’t portable and required plugging into a wall to make it through my day. Also, I only play a few games, Don’t really care about whatever games available on Steam. But just in case if I want to try some windows exclusive games this makes so much sense.
I have both and find it interesting to be able to unlock the potential with the mac laptop on the go. It's got a mini LED 16 inch display with TV level speakers and incredible battery life. Plus it makes little in the way of fan noise under load. Perfect to play a game or two while dealing with down time such as evenings in a hotel. I've got a m1 Max 32 gpu cores with 64gb of ram... should be interesting to see it in action with PC games. On native Apple games, everything flies so curious what I can get performance wise with the ARM Architecture. Hoping the Yakuza series by SEGA is compatible. Yeah, I didn't buy the mac laptop for gaming but if it can play PC games and I find myself twiddling thumbs...right on.
I’m on the last Intel Mac Mini with a decent eGPU so most games work nicely if they support Mac - but had to run Boot Camp Windows (with some tinkering to get the eGPU working) just to play Cities Skylines 2. Parallels was too slow. When I get around to upgrading to Apple Silicon it’s nice to know that there are options.
Don't be fooled. It only emulates windows games and doesn't run them natively. I Cann't even run Palworld on my M2 MacBook Air because of the double layer of translations going on. It will run games Ok if you get a MacBook Pro model but then again you are paying 2000€+ for Laptop that is basically a nice RUclips machine...

Great video! Quick question: does this work with online games or multiplayer co op games? I'd love to be able to play together with my friends who have windows pc's
I am planning on getting a MacBook hopefully in the near future. I’m glad I found this video! I am happy to know I can have the option to play at least some of my Windows-only games on Mac. (Checked the list, none of the games I own are compatible, but still good to know I have a few more options). One question, though: say I were to have both the Mac version of Steam for playing the majority of my games, and the Windows version for playing Windows games, would they conflict with each other in any way?
Only if you try to run them together at the same time as Steam only lets you play one game at a time. GPTK2 will be released with macOS 15 Sequoia which will further expand compatibility. The best option though isn't Whisky, rather Crossover which uses WINE + GPTK (and will use GPTK2) for a much wider range of compatibility. Many online games will not work because of anti-cheat software.
Hi, I have been trying to do this on my mac but whenever I click on “run” and on “steamsetup” nothing works. I’ve checked, my mac is an M2 chip and should be apple silicone. I’ve tried to delete everything and try again but nothing has worked so far. What should I do?
Also in my MAC it doesn't work.....I noticed that when I installed whisky there is no gptx icon but something like whiskywine....don't know how to fix it
Mac Intel users can just use bootcamp. Completely free. And completely supported by Apple. If this is what you need, I highly recommend a used 2020 iMac with i9 and 5700xt with 16gb. It runs Windows flawlessly and plays all games, such as Hogwarts Legacy, beautifully
This is amazing. Although I am trying to play AOE II and it doesnt work great and I want to have my disk space back, where is the game stored so I can uninstall it?
When I was running DMC5 the game crashed and I couldn't force quit so shut down my mac, when I went back on steam DMC5 was deleted but still takes up space on my storage, do you know how to fix that?

It’s an open source project that’s based on Wine that has contributions by Apple and Codeweavers. You can go literally read the source code. It’s as safe as about any software thanks to visibility.
Check the Mac gaming wiki to see if there’s any tweaks and lower the quality settings. Unfortunately, this is about 80% tops of running it on a pc, none of the m series GPUs are exactly powerful compared to the pc side of things
Thanks! I recently watched your video on using whiskey with steam on Mac to play windows only games and everything worked great until I tried to launch Battlefield 5 can you help me at all please?
Oh man, thanks for the super thanks but I’d replied more or less the same. I don’t have that game, the Mac gaming wiki says it’s kinda playable with crossover and does have notes for GPTK specifically but unclear what the user did. www.applegamingwiki.com/wiki/Battlefield_5 Your best bet would honestly be to check on Reddit, or try crossover. It has an unlocked demo for about 2 weeks.
But as an intel 27' iMac user with a i7 and a 5700 pro XT, I can just use bootcamp, reboot to windows in just a minute and still play whatever I want. So in this department, intel mac are still better as long as you have one of the last intel macs.
Is there a way this could run a non gaming application? I've tried installing a software we use in the office, it did install but doesn't run. Any workaround? I'm trying to get off parallels as it eats a lot of disk space. And I juyst need to run that 1 application so installing a whole OS is not what I'm looking for.

Coffee is a driving force for me
Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you for making this video!
Gothic 1 working marvelous. Macbook Air M2. A little heat, but it works suprisingly good for an emulation
this was informative but now I just need a mac
been looking for a way to do this forever. Thank you so much. You earned a sub
Glad I could help, and thanks. I have Mac gaming content coming, it’s a bit more… odd. That’s all I say for now.
@@dmug , hey, small question. Can you only use it for steam, or can you run other windows applications too?
@@bluephoenix6614no, GPTK is for direct x 11and 12 only. Wine and crossover which is an accelerated Wine can run regular windows apps.
What about epic games? Is there a way to instal it? Thanks
i've tried both whiskey and crossover and surprisingly crossover which is paid gives twice the frame rates in every game so i made a decision and bought yearly subscription to crossover and i think it was worth it
Good to know, I may need to do a follow up vid
Thanks for the tip, I am also going to get crossover
I’m glad that there’s more and more support for gaming on Mac OS. But I’ll just stick to always having a custom pc built on the side for gaming purposes. Currently have my m3 pro MacBook 14” for productivity/work and my pc with i7 13700k and 4070 ti super for gaming @1440p
CrossOver's grave
Not really, Code Weavers (makers of crossover) help to make GPTK. Crossover supports, older, direct x and Das has much wider compatibility, and also more configurability even when using the GPTK engine for DX12.
@@dmug Thx now I feel better about my license and money spent with them.
All they need is to add are Direct3D (predecessor of DirectX) translations and all the older titles would be compatible
Intel user, i'm doomed. :(
Am too with my Mac Pro 2019 but at least boot camp is far far better than GPTK.
@@dmugTrue. I'm worried for how long the 2019 Pro is going to last.
Use Crossover
Just use windows?
You guys are not totally doomed, I did find out if you use parallels desktop 15 on Big Sur you can in fact run pc games on a windows vm using your dedicated gpu using gpu pass through thanks to parallels desktop.
I didn't even see the menu for Rosetta but maybe that's due to updates to Whiskey not sure though. I am running a M3 Pro with 36gb of ram and currently on the Sequoia BETA 2 so we shall see how this all works but the instructions were super straightforward. So thank you. I am trying FFIIV Intergrade first lol.
Why do this? Gaming laptops are way cheaper than a Mac will ever be. And the CPUs have gotten faster than a Mac. I see no real reason to do this.

Quick question: does Whisky work with DirectX 9 games?
Anyone reading this, if you can afford your Mac you can afford a Windows PC to run the games natively
Just because someone has a mac doesn't mean they're ballin
If you can afford one computer, you shouldn’t buy two.
@@Zhammon when it they're paying $200 for 8GB of more ram, that's pretty ballin
@@Supadupanerd most people either opt for base models, buying used or refurbished or then there is also the college discount program apple runs
Yeah Parallels never really has been viable for much in the way of games. I’ll be sad when it’s time to give up my Mac Pro 2019.
I have both intel and apple silicon, I just used bootcamp on my intel base mac
No shit
Intel mac was so much better. You could do whatever you wanted with them. Silicon macs just bring more limitations to their computers.
I got an M1 Mac mini 8gb and I like it, but I miss the gaming aspects, I switched because I like ease of use with its software and the user interface
hopefully i can run metin2 (without using parallels), I just ordered a mac mini m4, I will give it a try when i get the unit.
Thanks for sharing. How does one make more space on the Drive C from Wiskey? I'm trying to download a game thats just over 80Gb, and I can't seem to remove any unnecessary files from Wiskey, or change the storage
Gracias a tu video pude jugar a Blood (1997) directamente en mi MacBook Air M1 sin problemas, muchísimas gracias por tu ayuda. Saludos desde Argentina.
you a very clear an complete guide for a workaround that seems like a no brainer thank you for doing this, also do you edit you voice on a software, im curious to know how id you do
Not sure what you mean: like use a voice changer?
Thanks for this. Not sure where I can report games that work but U-BOAT (2024 release, fantastic game) works very well. I have an M2 Max. Had to run it on Retina mode in the bottle config (I have a 5k screen). I found I could run it at 4K UHD with medium - high settings and only has occasional graphical glitches. If anyone sees this please add U-BOAT to the working lists. Thanks again!
I love the finder pillow
Thanks, I got it from Throw Boy
I’ll give this a try later. I wanna try blue stacks.
did it work if so im doing it too
i need help idk what to do.i bought beamng drive and it worked once but never again it just keeps saying error everytime i try to launch it
this is the best video found so far unto date!! trying because I don't want to download eta on my college laptop just my Mac ty ig ill see if this works these instructions I could actually follow
I did it and it work great. The only thing is that when I try to quit the windows steam app, it constantly reopens
Thanks for this. Does Whisky use Apple's new Game Porting Toolkit 2? Have you tried running the automated installer found on that initial wiki page at 0:24?
Thanks for the thanks pic (which i couldn’t get off my iPad and had to close app). I’ll let you know if it copes with Xbox game pass (I collect enough rewards points to pay for game pass ultimate every month and more) - unless you’ve already tried.
I've been really into Sam and Max lately and with the remaster of The Devil's Playhouse coming up, I've been really wanting to play the telltale games but they're only for Windows on Steam. Here's to hoping they work with Whisky!! If I do end up buying them and playing them on Whisky, I will try my best to remember to update this comment to add if they work or not. Thanks for the guide !
Great video! Quick question: does this work with online games or multiplayer co op games? I'd love to be able to play together with my friends who have windows pc's
Hey! Great video! how does this software compare to crossover in terms of performance
That’s a good question, I’ll probably do a follow up video because people keep mentioning crossover
I’ll have to give this a try.
your videos are really great.. i'm looking forward free games that can run natively on apple silicon
JSYK this option isn't very good and a lot of games aren't compatible w/ wine/whisky
PS - m1 macs are are big no! M1 Macbook Air with the upgraded gpu can barely run modern expansions in World of Warcraft
actually sir i have download steam a long time ago so might i have redownload it or can u tell me the process
right...my PC equipped with an RTX and AMD 8c 16th blew the electric bill last moth...the only available laptop i have is Macbook air m2
Good video. Will check it out. Thanks!
thank you so much! it worked. So nice.
Update: I tried to run Commandos : Behind enemy lines and it said "I can't find Direct X 5" and that's all. :(
wow, your mic sounds really good.
helped me out a bunch , thanks!
This is amazing. Although I am trying to play AOE II and it doesnt work great and I want to have my disk space back, where is the game stored so I can uninstall it?
Great video!! Thanks for this but can we use epicgames like steam?
Awesome thank you!
prego
When I was running DMC5 the game crashed and I couldn't force quit so shut down my mac, when I went back on steam DMC5 was deleted but still takes up space on my storage, do you know how to fix that?
thank you i can run windows games in steam in mac now thank thank thank thank thank thank thank thank thank thank thank thank thank you
nice tutorial, i just watched your SL videos and i also really enjoyed them. my M1 mac mini's stuck in recovery mode and EVERY attempt at reviving/restoring with apple configurator just fails, and i don't have applecare. i'm totally SOL.
So you’ve tried using DFU mode and using another Mac to restore it? Mr. McIntosh has a video tutorial on how to do that.
@@dmug ...that's the thing, the light flashes yellow, appears as soon as my mac chimes. i looked it up, and it indicates there may be a hardware issue. i've tried different USB-C cables both reviving and restoring. i can't even do a diagnostics test since it happens as soon as i plug it in. i think my SSD might be faulty, cause i've noticed macOS get slowly more unstable since i installed sonoma, to the point where doing nearly anything froze the whole system. again, i don't have applecare and repairs are probably gonna be more expensive than a steam deck or half of a gaming PC, which is honestly what i want more anyway...
Nice video, a question: can it be done with the Epic Launcher instead of steam?
yes but be aware of the anticheat
you can get banned
it works!! thank you so much. i had used crossover previously, but the price is too much for me. thanks!

Thanks for the helpful video! I installed a Windows game on my Mac using Whisky. Now, I can't find the game files in Finder. I'm new to macOS. Any tips on where Whisky stores these files? I need to transfer them to an SDXC card
During the setup, specify the location to your external drive. Be prepared to have long load times with sdxc
Good looking microphone! 👍🏻
Just the ol’ Sm7b I bought in 2010. Interesting how it’s become a staple of RUclips.
Can be used for more than playing games? Lets say, run originlab?
I use my PC for gaming and my MacBook for everything else, maybe the odd game of Rim World on it
how long is it meant to take to finish loading the bottle after you created one in whisky? Its taking me a while
Thanks bro that was big help
Is there something like this for EA’s games? Like Jedi Survivor?
whisky software is safe means no malware??
It’s an open source project that’s based on Wine that has contributions by Apple and Codeweavers. You can go literally read the source code. It’s as safe as about any software thanks to visibility.
Very informative for Mac Gamers
thanks, got the game i wanted to work! do you know how to fix fps drops and audio stuttering?
Check the Mac gaming wiki to see if there’s any tweaks and lower the quality settings. Unfortunately, this is about 80% tops of running it on a pc, none of the m series GPUs are exactly powerful compared to the pc side of things
Thanks! I recently watched your video on using whiskey with steam on Mac to play windows only games and everything worked great until I tried to launch Battlefield 5 can you help me at all please?
Oh man, thanks for the super thanks but I’d replied more or less the same.
I don’t have that game, the Mac gaming wiki says it’s kinda playable with crossover and does have notes for GPTK specifically but unclear what the user did.
www.applegamingwiki.com/wiki/Battlefield_5
Your best bet would honestly be to check on Reddit, or try crossover.
I am way too curious to see if SteamVR will run under this. That would be absolute madness if I could run an original HTC Vive off my M1 Pro.
Almost certainly won't work because of the device drivers. You could always try....
@@dmug yeah I realized that a minute after I commented lol
great video! thanks , what about Xbox ? and Geforce?
Check the Mac gaming wiki and r/macgaming, doesn’t the GeForce go or whatever it’s called have a Mac native client for streaming?
Is there a way this could run a non gaming application? I've tried installing a software we use in the office, it did install but doesn't run. Any workaround? I'm trying to get off parallels as it eats a lot of disk space. And I juyst need to run that 1 application so installing a whole OS is not what I'm looking for.
Crossover can do it as well as just using wine. GPTK is exclusively for Direct X programs
Thanks this Video was very helpful but one Problem i came across is my Steam isn't going into full Screen even when i pick Big Picture Mode The games are in Window Mode even when i go into Settings in press Full Screen in game so i don't know how to fix this issue
