  • Here's how to make food for a baby opossum:
In a blender, mix 1/4 cup moistened dog or cat food, 1/2 cup mixed vegetables, a small amount of kale, 1 container of Yoplait plain or French Vanilla yogurt, 1/8 apple peeled and chopped, and 1/8 banana.
In a bowl, mix 1/4 cup Esbilac with 3/4 cups water, stir and then add to the blender.
To the blender, add 1/8 cup caned fish with 1 hard boiled egg, chopped.
Blend until smooth and then store in a mason jar in the fridge. You can make more than this and freeze it. This will last a baby opossum several days to a week.

Thank you for this recipe, a baby boy about 6 1/2 weeks old now had shown up in the yard one morning about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Wouldn't take a tube, and stupid fussy eater. Found this recipe, made it just now and he went right to it. Thank you again, amazing opossum slurry. Abundant love and light to you and all.

Thank you very much for this video. I didn't know what to feed my little one, I found him in my backyard and I'm determined to do my best to care for him until I find a good wildlife center to take him in :)

Update: we've released him, he got big enough to be released. He was eager to go and explore, we would take him out from time to time and he loved it. We miss him but we are happy he got big and strong :)

Thanks for the valuable information. I appreciate
your compassion and interest in north America's most interesting animal. I'm a possum lover too. I have an orphaned juvenile that is exhibiting coprophagy. I'm having trouble finding information on the eating of feces and pee of the Virginia Opossum. Lately I noticed both practices right after waking. I understand that can be normal for the young of many species, but didn't notice it in the previous rescues. That's something the mother normally takes care of in cleaning the young. I just never noticed before on their own. Do you find that to be the case with those you have raised? I'm just a little concerned about deficiencies.
The only thing I can think of is that B vitamins, etc are produced and absorption may be inadequate with their short intestine.
I'm trying to find a quality multiple vitamin minerals supplement in case it's deficient in something. Do you have any recommendations that work for yours?

People need to truly do their homework on possum diet because they are sensitive and get mbd easily..I was watching utube thinking its easy...its not easy yet worth it for their health..this diet seems okay yet the balance has to be exact ...peters food diet plus a side of organic vegan diet has worked for mine...

Thank you for this video! I live in foothills and get visits from skunks, raccoons, the occasional bobcat and of course coyotes... AND opposums. A few nights ago one of the opposums' belly was dragging on the ground and squirming like crazy leading me to think she has a pouch full of babies. Been giving her wet and dry cat food and various foods, tonight I've boiled a couple of eggs, with a sliced up banana. I understand these guys can suffer from calcium deficiency, I am also wondering if lysine gel/powder is something that would be good for their immune systems... (researching that now.) Thank again! I will try this recipe out as soon as I've got some money...

Is dry cat food a little better for the opossum or is the dog food better or is it the same? I just heard 30% protein no more than that is good.

No milk. It's really bad for possums. They can have a milk replacement formula she shows in this video.
