Lancashire & Yorkshire Memories Part 6 - Manchester to Bury A film of the steam age in the late 1960's around the ex-Lancashire and Yorkshire's Manchester Victoria station. The climb of Miles Platting bank at the time when steam worked out of the Bury platforms and where the trams now reign. There also is coverage of the LNWR's Exchange station. Shed visits to Patricroft, and Newton Heath with an extensive footage of locomotives working there in 1965 such as Britannias, Ivatt 2-6-01s, 2-6-4T's, and visiting B1 and A2 amongst the resident Stanier types. The line to Bury is followed including a railtour which brought a pair of Jinty's to Bolton Street and a 2-6-4T to Bacup. Various industrial locations are also visited including Trafford Park, Manchester Ship Canal Railway at Mode Wheel, Heap Bridge and the ICI Blackley Works. Even Manchester and Stalybridge trolley buses put in an appearance in this film of the steam railway scene as it was in the 1960's.

I've watched one or two of these film and found them very interesting. I'd have been about 8 when these were filmed so just recal the end of steam. I lived in the south east so it was all electric commuter lines where I lived but my Grandma lived right opposite Carlisle Upperby sheds. When visiting her I loved watching proper trains rather than boring EMU's with proper signals. I'd get a platform ticket for Carlisle Citadel station and pass and hour or two, but was never a hardcore number taker. I had an uncle who was a driver at Etterby diesel depot (now DRS) and would get shown round class 25, 40, 47 etc. and heretical as it may seem I preferred diesels and still do. I was fond of D400's double headed on Glasgow London expresses which made the window ratlle in my gran's house. A few years later when about 14 I;d moved back to Carlisle but it was all electified and the D400's had gone, so I lost interest or gained interest in other things.

Great video even though the quality is not at today's standard. I have an old Street plan of Manchester & Salford showing all of the extensive dock & freight lines serving the area so it was interesting to see the industrial locos working these lines. Thanks very much.

My dad used to work on these lines back then. He's no longer with us but he told me plenty of stories including the runaway train you mention in the video. I wonder if he was o on the footplate of any of the locos shown in the film. I like to think so. Nice upload 👍

Very interesting and brought back lots of memories as I lived in North Cheshire until 1985. One correction, Tudor Minstrel was not the only A2 to visit Newton Heath mpd. On 19/20 August 1966, Blue Peter visited to have the fire brick arch rebuilt. I have the pictures taken on a sunny Satturday, 20 August 1966. The following day it worked the Holyhead & Brymbo Tour from , and back to, Manchester Central station. I was on that tour.

Many of these locos would be sent to Cashmores, Great Bridge, or Drapers in Hull for scrapping. Most of them sound and look as though they are ready for that!

some great shots / just a pity most of this 19SIXTIES Film was shot on 8 mm format , instead of 16mm which was somewhat dearer but gave sharper resulyts / nevertheless some fascinating records of the Manchester area. eg Street road traffic scenes / and the INdustrial works and sidings . Also liked the 47 Diesel on the 90 Ton Oil tankers getting banked up the Viciously graded Miles platting by the Black 5
