Some great tips there Loz and a good reminder to all of us who sometimes take these things for granted. Before I got my Stealth I got caught out by a bad forecast on a trip that took me 4.5hrs to paddle back about 3km… was close to exhaustion and had no way to communicate my problem. That was a wake up call to alway have a plan for the risks. Thanks for sharing
Good overview of safety. My strategy is don't go out in the yak if the wind is over 6kts, it limits my windows, especially this season, but it also reduces the dangers.
Excellent vid mate. Thanks for this. I've learned fitness and common sense also plays a big part in being safe out on the kayak. Few years ago I took my kayak out to a small rocky reef off tarakena bay wellington. Only approx 200m offshore, but on my way back in a strong norwester developed and geez it was hardwork to get back. Each time I stopped for a break I was blown back 30-50m. Bloody lucky. Many lessons learned that day. Greater appreciation for the kayak, my limits and the ocean.
Good vid - hope you get lots of views to keep this top of mind. Always prepare for the worst. Conditions can change very quickly and the sea is much stronger than most people are aware.
Another excellent piece lozza. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. You’ve made so many valid points, this video is a great reminder to stay vigilant at all times.
Thanks for the vid and all the life saving tips, Laurie. Regarding the stirrup around the 5:50 mark that you made, what's the orange material around part of the rope, presumably to provide some rigidity to the rope to keep an open loop?

Andy most of my worst experiences were when I started yak fishing, fortunately we survived to learn from it 👍

Great advice, especially from exposed beaches that lack natural shelter from hills 👍

Winny, I think we’ve all done that, especially in our early days of yak fishing 😬
Have you got any surf vids coming up?

Well said mate 👍

Great vid Loz, you are definitely correct about fishing with new Yakers, it puts a lot of responsibility on you as the lead.
100% mate, I’ve heard your tow rope doesn’t gather dust 👍
Great tips Laurie, still learning from ya :) always wondered what you carried in the back seat bag. Thank you for sharing.
Philippa, it’s a great place to put the stuff you hope not to use (first aid kit, toilet paper) 😂
Top vid Laurie - very relevant, well presented. I'll review my long-leash on the paddle tomorrow. Thanks for taking the time to make the vid.
I’m picking identifying risk would have been high priority during your career.
That stirrup is a bloody good idea. I'll make one this weekend, i reckon.
Thanks for this video, its one of the best i have seen very relavant and appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Awesome, glad you liked it 👍
All excellent points. I also carry a small air horn for alerting boat traffic and making emergency signals.
😮 that would work
Some excellent points there.
Cheers Rob 👍

Geoff, it’s spray hose, strong but flexible 👍
Cheers Laurie
