It also pisses me off when you see these cliques out on the water that will make fun of your fishing kayak if it isn't a certain brand. F that bro we're just blessed to be out on the water catching fish
I been there. This year I was going to fish a tournament and They were making fun because I have a HooDoo. and On top of my car. I am on a fixed income so can't but a fancy truck or trailer. I told them with my Kayak I catch lot of fish, I said look at my RUclips channel. Most of the kayaks now look like Jon Boat. Auto Pilot Live scope. I have a motor for mine. I rather paddle.
25 year kayak fisherman here. Totally agree, especially as a minimalist. I started with a T120 hull, fishing pfd, carbon/fiberglass paddle. Stayed with that setup for about 12 years. Only upgrades I went to was a new kayak because of better seats and a quality 5" graph. Bass fishing, I'll primarily use the electronics for bottom/structure and temps. Certain times of the year it's great to mark bait. But if you're a decent fisherman and can read the bank or visible structure, you're going to catch plenty of fish without electronics. I almost never have more than two rods on deck. I still chuckle when I see a fully loaded peddle boat with 12 rods and 100 pounds of gear. I can put in in 5 minutes and be fishing while someone is trying to get into their drysuit and their rig is still car-topped.
Mostly agree. I started with an OK Prowler 13 almost 20 years ago. Loved that boat - it was perfect for a lot of scenarios. Moved up to Hobies and now use a PA 14. I mostly fish inshore so we cover a lot of distance in open water. Stock Hobie paddle works for me. The PA is heavy but once on the water, it is ideal. Most important thing about the PFD is wear it. Always. Not sure why you would want a camo/low vis PFD... Dress for the water temp. Make sure you have ALL of the USCG required safety gear - visual / audio signaling devices, etc. I always carry a handheld marine VHF radio, don't trust your life to a cell phone. Everything else is a nice-to-have.
Great video. I started with a lifetime and now have an Old Town Sportsman 106. I absolutely love it. It’s my 3rd year in this boat and I wouldn’t trade it. I have the same PFD company you do and I never go out without it on me. I also bought a bend and branches paddle and love it. All this was on your recommendation. You’re the man thanks. I love this sport!!!
I completely agree. I bought an Old Town 120 paddle kayak 2years ago. I knew I was putting a motor on it anyway so I didn’t worry about the pedal kayak. I bought the Bending Branches paddle when I bought my kayak. I love my setup. I’m a big guy also , so stability was crucial to me. You helped me choose my kayak. Thank you for all your advice 👍🏾😂
@brnzbk331I'm buying a oldtown sportsman 120 non pdl today, are you able to put a trolling motor on this boat ? I'm very new ,this will be my first kayak? please any info
Very good video, for me I actually love paddling. Yes I’m limited to how far I can go but that’s part of the challenge to me. Just like I love traditional archery over compound
I have had a 300 dollar pelican kayak for eight years and still love it I added a anchor trolley system to it I carry a cooler and two no more than three rods and one 3600 box of lures I catch plenty of redfish trout and flounder I did mount a stadium seat in it for comfort but that's it I use it all the time and love it take it to the beach and flats and river systems around dauphin island Alabama
Awesome video Chad! On your fishing PFD video, make sure folks understand that while pockets are handy, they can flat sure affect reentry if something goes wrong. It was especially an eye opening thing on my latest reentry video with the inflatables! Keep up the great work brother!
I’ve owned a bass boat for 40+ years. I also have a Pelican pontoon bass boat. I recently caught some fish on vacation and my wife really enjoyed it so we bought 2 Kayaks this week. There are a lot of small lakes and rivers in my area and some of them can’t be accessed with either of my boats. Light weight was a big factor for me and I don’t see myself getting a peddle or electric powered kayak since I think my other boats are better fishing platforms where they are useable. I took up fly fishing 2 years ago and it’s not going to replace my other techniques. Sometimes fly fishing is the best way to catch a fish and I’m thinking that sometimes a Kayak is the best boat to fish with.
I'm 100% with you on the paddle. I upgraded to a pro angler carbon. It is life changing for kayak fishing. It doubled the amount of water I could cover in my pursuit. I had the angler classic before and the carbon feels like nothing in comparison but actually has more power in the water. 1,000% worth the money.
Thanks Chad...always helps our sport to go over the basics. All the 'other stuff' I believe causes folks to shy away as the thought is they can't kayak fish without it.
Thank you. As soon as we get back from ICAST next week, we are going to shoot a series of videos that takes us back and covers all of the basics, but in an updated format.
Great video. Fully agree with the simplicity of starting. Anchor Wizard is the one product I wish I got when I first started. Have purchased 3 thus far. Other than that spend the money on fishing tackle and learn your needs for kayaking before dropping money on products you really don’t need. Like most of us in this sport I’m sure you all have products laying around the house that you don’t even use anymore.
Crescent Kayaks make quality fishing kayaks. Tracking and ease of paddling is amazing. I went from a Lifetime 10 foot to a Crescent LiteTackle. I use a kayak leash. You don't want the paddle drifting away if it falls over. My Crescent will most likely be my last kayak, they're that good.
Kayak fishing can be very expensive, but it can be as simple as a kayak, pfd, paddle and a little fishing gear. I have won a couple tournaments this year paddling from a used boat with no extra rigging or sonar. Time on the water is the most important part!
Would I be better suited to mount my anchor wizard on the bow or stern? I usually fish rivers, might take my kayak on some smaller lakes. I usually try and go up stream so I have the current to help me back to the car when I am done fishing/tired. I like to anchor at a spot for a few minutes/break it down and move up.
For PFD, auto inflate vs comfort of the mesh back vs the full back like in the bluestorm. Comfort in the heat as well, I want something that I won't take off because I'm getting too hot or uncomfortable. I know myself, I'll take it off if I get really uncomfortable. Then inevitably I'll take a spill and struggle to get back in my kayak. Also how useful are the pockets and attach points for fishing specifically and how is the zipper quality as we know zippers are a common failure point.
I bought a perception joyride 10 for 309 bucks on amazon, last “used like new” that they had and its brand new. I put some rod holders on it and its got scotty ball bases for my fish finder, everything i need to fish and take it on the river in WV too. Amazing how much some people splurge on a “fishing kayak”
I started with a Tarpon 140, and a pair of Sundolphin Jouney 10SS kayaks 5 years ago. Both kayaks were decent. The Tarpon was only 29 inches wide so it was fast. Tracked well even without the rudder. The Sundolphin was not as unstable as folks made it out to be. Wondering if they were near or over the weight limits. Sold those and got a NuCanoe Flint. That thing was a barge loaded. Sold it and went to a canoe for a while. I still have the 17 ft canoe. Paddles well and I can walk down the center or stand up and paddle. A few weeks ago, I got the Tamarack Pro. So far its pretty good. I can stand up in it. It feels shaky so I don't stand very long. I still use my $20 full size PFD, and my large net I got in case I get a large catfish ,musky, or pike. I went with a 10 ft paddle kayak cause the 17 ft canoe weighs about 85 pounds. The kayak is 57 pounds. Much easier to load on the trailer after a day of paddling. I have a utility trailer so I have to pick up the paddle craft at the beginning and ending of the trip. I do not have a fish finder or anything electronic.
Great video, I'd say the first thing you'd need is a baseline of physical fitness. Aka being able to paddle when you need to. Especially with all of the weight people add on their fishing rig.
Yooo. 100% on the PFD! Hands down get a comfortable and quality PFD. And a compelling case for the quality paddle! I still say if you have a pedal drive or motor, get a cheap paddle 🤷🏽♂️
Another great video Chad. In regards to the PFD, I wear mine all the time, but it is about time for me to replace it. I fish in central Florida, and it gets pretty hot. Do you think there is an advantage from one PDF to another in how well it dissipates body heat? Also, I clean mine by hand from time to time, so one thing you may consider for your video is how easy is it to clean.
It really depends on how big the angler is and how much gear they carry. For me, the Hobie Pro Angler was the fastest with a light load, but started to diminish with a heavy load. The Native was slower with the lighter load, but maintained its speed a little better (or less drop off) with a heavy load. The Old Town Pedal drive seemed to be a great compromise and it performed consistently throughout the performance range.
@@ChadHooverFishing Yeah that makes sense. Thank you for the response. For context, I’m about 200 lbs. And fishing would be secondary to wanting a smooth, comfortable, quick ride. Maximum gear.. a 30 dry bag, 2-3 rods / net, and a crate w/ tackle.
I have a Three Rivers Big Fish 108, Paddle I didn’t know about when I bought the 108, so I bought what the shop keeper recommended, (was about 90.00 three rivers brand) and PFD I got a NRS Chinook, and I got the recommended anchor wizard.
Having bought 3 fishing kayaks in 1 year the Bonafide is definitely worth it. My first was a lifetime Tamarack pro, too wobbly to stand felt real off balance. 2nd was a pelican catchmode 110 and it was like paddling a barge through the water standability was great but construction quality felt lesser than a walmart kayak. Since purchasing a Bonafide SS107 I cant really find anything I dislike about it. I motorized my Bonafide with a newport vessels 36lb thrust and it moves pretty good. Comfy seat plenty of foot room I can stand up and walk to the front of my kayak and fish off the front. Im also pretty small guy. If your upper end of 5ft I would go RS117 or the bigger SS.
10:41 I would like to add, try to buy a kayak and these accessories at your local kayak dealer too! Aside from them sharing expert knowledge about kayaks, they also may have deals in store that aren’t online to get you in the kayak you want. Lastly, most will allow you to demo a kayak too.
Hi Chad. Another great video with lots of great info. Have you looked at the NRS Raku Fishing PFD? I think its a similar idea as the Blue Storm Kinetic. It has floatation along the whole back but its a lot thinner and more spread out than some of the other PFDs they sell for whitewater etc.
Man, I really need to consider an anchor wizard. Been wanting to do some offshore fishing. I’ve always wanted an Xi3 for spotlock but maybe all I need is an anchor wizard.
Most fun I’ve had fishing in a kayak was on a lifetime hydros 85, hooking into a 4lb large mouth and it dragging me in that little kayak halfway across the pond 😂
Great video. I’ve been fishing out of a Moken 12.5 for 3 years. Would I like something a little bigger and better, absolutely! But right now I’m still on the water and catching tanks and being competitive.
You nailed it! I was thinking what are the 3 things I need and it was a Kayak, Paddle, and PFD. Also, sweat dripping down your butt crack was TMI....lol.
Everyone around me talks like you need a boat for fishing but I wanted a kayak because majority of the places around me are small lakes. I can take my kayak to way more places then they can,so no,I dont need a damn boat. Spend the money on the paddles, its worth it. Also if youre smart, wait til fall or winter to get the high dollar ones. I got a nice paddle that was about $120-$140 but was discounted to $60
hey, how does the anchor wizard stop your kayak from turning and spinning in place like you mentioned? do you put the anchor in the water a few feet and that creates enough drag to not spin or do you put it on the front of the kayak and drop it all the way to the bottom of the lake like a normal use of an anchor? cant quite catch what you ment in the video. thanks for the info
Plenty of people talk about them. They are two of the most popular brands in the sport. I’ve done videos on both on this channel so I’m not sure what you are talking about.
Chad I can’t agree with your more on necessity. How ever I do give my buddies crap for having a radio and or AC on their motorcycle. To me that’s not what riding is about, but to each his own.
I always look at the weight of a paddle and how and what it's made of I also look at the weight of the kayak also a lot of places I go you cant carry a 100 + kayak easy even with a cart
Wish I'd seen this before I bought my sit in yak. Paid $500+ and it is heavy to paddle in a river. Lesson learned. But, I don't go out but 2 or 3 times in a year, so I keep it. Would like to stabilize it for lake use as the boat wakes are scary.
maybe i dont get out enough... but my $60 amazon/wontiago carbon paddle is just as nice as the $200 werner tybee i had with my old kayak. either paddle is miles better than the aluminum paddle that came with my boat though.
I added the Wontiago paddle to my cart. I have always used the paddle that comes with the kayak (I have a Vibe Yellowfin 100) but seeing his video and then your comment, I think it's time to get some luxury in moving around. After 6 or so hours on the water, I bet paddling back to the truck isn't as tiring as it is now with my Vibe paddle. Thank you.
Hey Chad how come no one mentions Pelican kayaks for entry level fishing kayaks. I’ve been running a catch 100 for almost 10 years now. From creeks to rivers to lakes and ponds this thing has served me very well. Also I got into this thing for 525 with a Magellan carbon paddle.
@VAFSH4LIF Awesome! I have a the pro version. I have a anchor trolley , Garmin Striker 4plus, Yakattack Norqua 10h battery, standard milk crate with 4 pole holders, and Yakattack Omega rod holder. Just got a Yakattack bunksters cart also.
I so agree! The difference in a Cheapie and a decent Carbon Fiber paddle, is night and day and well worth the added cost!!! Your a fool if you dont have a good PFD and you wear it!
If I recall correctly, Bearded Dad said if you have a pedal kayak you could go with the cheapest paddle but if paddling is all you have go with the best paddle….I’m just saying
Ummm your three recommendations PLUS a Fishing Rod & Reel. I recommend you splurge on your setup with quality lines and hooks. Once you learn to kayak fish AND catch fish then splurge on the rest. But quality fishing gear will help you to catch fish and feel your purchase is worth it. Finally, do NOT leave a fiberglass paddle in the sun for extended periods 🤬 once the sun breaks it down and you start itching from the fiberglass handle resting on your legs, rubbing your arms, and getting in your hands you will understand🤷♂️
ALL that information was very interesting and important..... well, maybe except for the sweat waterfall buttcrack info...lol. Thanks Chad.. good info..!
Kayak PFD questions to address: 1. What should you tether to the PFD versus to a side pouch in the Kayak? 2. Which items kept on the vest versus in the vest pockets?
I just watched the video you talked about before this one and i feel you parially missed what the bearded dude said. He starts with dont start with a 200 to 300 dollar paddle. He recommend stay around 100 but then says he still only has his 20 dollar one. But in the end you guys sound like youre really on the same page.
I didn’t miss it, I was just saying that I don’t think you should skimp on the paddle and he says he still uses one that’s $20. Pretty much what I said.
@@edtroup8606 that's if you go fishing. If fishing, gotta have rod & reel plus baits also. But just out in the kayak to get the feel before fishing, no.
why don't you talk about Native watercraft. It's a great kayak I'm surprised you talk about them. Unless you don't know much about them, then i could understand why.
I did a full walkthrough of their Native Titan X last year. I don’t talk about a lot of “other” kayaks anymore since I did that for a year and now focus on the ones that I use, which is BONAFIDE. Here is my full walkthrough of the Native Titan X. ruclips.net/video/aXWEGGNxuEA/видео.htmlsi=gNkfqoNo_X5UZvin
ps17 more then 3k. export is extremely expensive. a hoboe outback isnt much dearer. can buy locally made kayak with own sold pedal patent with more accessories in the deal for half the price. has a nice cheap drop in electric america is way over priced. china are horrible to paddle
Not sure if it's just me but my experience with bending branches hasn't been that great. Got the angler pro Versa-loc with fiberglass blades and one of the blades has a significant glue squeeze out left behind and the other side looks to have been over ground and has a bright white spot on the other blade. Contacted support and it's coming up on 6 busidays without so much as a peep. Highly disappointed for the price I paid I feel like I got a cosmetic blemish. I'd expect near perfection for the price tag. Thus far I wouldn't reccomend this company to anyone who has ocd or expects a return email in a reasonable time frame.
@@ChadHooverFishing being Canadian and ordering directly from bending branches was unirpnically easier than getting one from a Canadian dealer. I'm still holding out for support to reach out.
I didn’t. It’s assumed that if you are going fishing you need fishing gear. That topic is endless, this is the three things you need to get started doing it from a kayak. Thanks for the comment though.
It’s not too much for him. And how he kayak fishes doesn’t impact how you can kayak fish. Oh yeah, Gene’s kayak is actually probably closer to $15,000😂😂
you also NEED some kind of fishing gear to go fishing, you can't kayak fish without a pole or at least some line and a hook, cmon now, and you don't NEED a pfd
You do need a PFD. And like most people with common sense it is just assumed that if you were going kayaking fishing that you had the fishing stuff. This video didn’t say and wasn’t titled the Only Three Things You Need to go Fishing. But thanks for pointing out the obvious, I keep forgetting what world we live in these days where there are many people who only exist to try and criticize and point out any and every flaw they see in everything. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@ChadHooverFishing been fishing without a pfd for about 28 years, never NEEDED one. But I certainly NEED a fishing rod and reel to go fishing. So... You can say what you like. I do enjoy your channel, but I know a need from a want more than you, somehow, supposedly. Not trying to critisize what you're saying, or I guess actually I am. NEED from WANT or WISH is a thing of the past I guess, we NEED PFDs but don't NEED a fishing rod. I guess I'm the outcast here, lol.
Ha! Thanks. Stating that you fish from a kayak doesn’t make it okay to decide what someone else should do or call it stupid. But thanks for the comment

Yessir, I have a separate video on this coming, but I agree.
Hi Chad. Another great video with lots of great info. Have you looked at the NRS Raku Fishing PFD? I think its a similar idea as the Blue Storm Kinetic. It has floatation along the whole back but its a lot thinner and more spread out than some of the other PFDs they sell for whitewater etc.
I have not, but someone else also suggested it and I’m adding it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion
Man, I really need to consider an anchor wizard. Been wanting to do some offshore fishing. I’ve always wanted an Xi3 for spotlock but maybe all I need is an anchor wizard.
I actually think the Anchor Wizard is the best spot lock there is… 😜
Most fun I’ve had fishing in a kayak was on a lifetime hydros 85, hooking into a 4lb large mouth and it dragging me in that little kayak halfway across the pond 😂
Heck yeah, that’s awesome
Was just fishing in one yesterday! Hooked into a 30 lb stingray on a trout rod. Fun stuff and fits in my station wagon. 😂
@@CevicheTheory that would be a blast
have a boat, want to fish places it cant go. kayaks are amazingly effective. prefer it more the hassles associated with the boat
I agree with everything in your video I am guilty of buying a cheap pfd and paddle and eventually went back and rebought
Ha! You are welcome. (including the visual that you got from the sweating comment) 😂😂😂
great video. your absoulutly right. 👍👍👍👍
Thank you for watching!
Yes, pretty much nailed it
I'm surprised you didn't get a PFD from the US Navy too since you retired from there lol. Navy Vet here too.
Ha! All the ones I used there were for SAR or TACTICAL use
Just let us know when the Anchor wizard is available, been watching for months on it and the Sasquatch bar.
Should be available now
Been trying to find a PFD that doesn't ride up to my neck, I have a big of a belly so its a bit frustrating.
All great points. What mic did you use?
Thanks. It’s the DJI mics. My son Austin did the research on them and we upgraded a few months ago and they have been fantastic.
A paddle with a hook retrieve also makes a huge difference for us that still get snagged on stuff.
Great content Chad!
Great video and advice but question Why doesn’t anyone ever talk about old town kayaks or Hobie kayaks in this sport?
Plenty of people talk about them. They are two of the most popular brands in the sport. I’ve done videos on both on this channel so I’m not sure what you are talking about.
Chad I can’t agree with your more on necessity. How ever I do give my buddies crap for having a radio and or AC on their motorcycle. To me that’s not what riding is about, but to each his own.
Hi everyone, I have read many of your comments with pleasure, it's cool.
Kayaks are not very common in my country. but I’m on my way to my first kayak
Chad, what is the name of the seat cushion for a kayak?
It’s Kayak Kushion. Here is a link to the KBF Edition

@@ChadHooverFishing thank you very much!!!
Also I got into this thing for 525 with a Magellan carbon paddle.
cuase they get paid by big kayak manufactures
Great tips chad
Appreciate you watching Dakota!👊🏽
Awesome video!
Thank you for watching!
@@ChadHooverFishing I'm just getting started and need all the help I can get! All your stuff has been awesome for a kayak beginner.
Spot on advice.
Great informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
Where can i get KBF hats and stickers?
We have some available on our store and will be adding more this fall after the Championships.

getting done!!
That Bending Branches Angler Pro is worth every single dollar.
1. $400 Lifetime Tamarack Pro
2. Angler PFD
3. high end Walmart paddle
4. Yakattack safety flag.
5. 4 month entry to the Knukelhed series
I've been fishing out of my Lifetime Tamarack for 3 years and Love it, have it modded out.
Why no NRS Raku?
I will add it to the list
If I recall correctly, Bearded Dad said if you have a pedal kayak you could go with the cheapest paddle but if paddling is all you have go with the best paddle….I’m just saying
Yeap, he did. But I don’t pay $1100 for my paddle that I can’t use where many of the biggest bass live…. Just saying
Super job! If ya werent sweating it wouldnt be do much fun. Lol
Ha! Thanks
Ha! Thanks
Kayak PFD questions to address:
1. What should you tether to the PFD versus to a side pouch in the Kayak?
2. Which items kept on the vest versus in the vest pockets?
Thanks and we will definitely cover that
I'm forever going to be a banker bass man.. lol can't afford anything at the moment...
Why do kayak fisherman avoid auto pfds? I use it and its perfect.
Anything that is mechanical can fail
So wait the “three things you need” is a good paddle, pfd. Which i agree. And oh wait….
A 1000 dollar plus kayak…….
Hey Chad! I’m trying to sell my kayak, how would you recommend selling it?
Facebook marketplace and Craigslists are very effective and there are a couple of Facebook groups that are dedicated to selling kayaks as well.
@@ChadHooverFishing Thank you!!
@ChadHooverFishing I'm guessing you didn't read my whole comment either but hey, have a good day
I’m not trying to be Mr. Obvious BUT if I’m “kayak fishing” won’t the #1 be a kayak and #2 be the fishing rod and reel?😂😂 great video anyways Chad.
To fish from a kayak “fishing stuff” is a prerequisite, not one of the three things you need to kayak fish. LOL
Geez, why didn’t you make this video 8 months ago and send it to me? 😅 Great info, as usual!
Sorry! I mean, I did make a similar version about two years ago…. LOL
The only 3 things is just that, kayak, paddle, and PFD!!
Yeap
Maybe a license😊
@@edtroup8606 that's if you go fishing. If fishing, gotta have rod & reel plus baits also. But just out in the kayak to get the feel before fishing, no.
I'm getting the Magellan pro angler 600$
We just did a video with Realtree on picking that kayak out at Academy. It should be out very soon
All i need is more time on the water lol
For me:
1. Paddle
2. 2 Fishing poles.
3. Cooler with some drinks and snacks.
Everything else is just clutter.
Don’t forget the PFD! 😜
kayaks are starting to replace small jonboats
I wish the net was also retractable
👍
why don't you talk about Native watercraft.
Here is my full walkthrough of the Native Titan X.

ps17 more then 3k. export is extremely expensive. a hoboe outback isnt much dearer. can buy locally made kayak with own sold pedal patent with more accessories in the deal for half the price. has a nice cheap drop in electric america is way over priced. china are horrible to paddle
Chickens are faster than lizards with potato chips and soda drinking
Best answer to why don’t you buy a boat: Because then other people want to go out with me.
Truth
Did you contact your dealer? That’s where all customers service should start
@@ChadHooverFishing being Canadian and ordering directly from bending branches was unirpnically easier than getting one from a Canadian dealer.
I'm still holding out for support to reach out.
you forgot "fishing pole"
When people decide to kayak fish they've usually already been fishing for a bit so they already have at least a pole.
I didn’t. It’s assumed that if you are going fishing you need fishing gear. That topic is endless, this is the three things you need to get started doing it from a kayak. Thanks for the comment though.
No Gene, fluke master has to much crap on his kayak. He got a $10,000 kayak or more.
When people decide to kayak fish they've usually already been fishing for a bit so they already have at least a pole.
Having multiple graphs and transducers on a kayak is stupid, get a boat !!! And I fish from a kayak
Ha! Thanks. Stating that you fish from a kayak doesn’t make it okay to decide what someone else should do or call it stupid. But thanks for the comment
!.- Permission from your wife to go fishing...2.- A body of water to be fishing...and 3.- PATIENCE

Thanks and I’m glad I’ve been able to help
I bought a Cresent CK1. 11ft sit on top 60lbs 400lb weight capacity.
