  • @Urgelt
    @Urgelt 2 года назад +83

    Well. The Reachmen in Skyrim, the Forlorn, are said to be descended from Bretons, not so? *They're* pretty darned weird. Consorting with hagravens, taming trolls, turning their heroes into undead briarhearted warriors, slurping down human remains for breakfast... pretty over-the-top, they are. Their idea of decoration is skulls and heads taken from spriggans. They wear feathers and face paint and are hostile to just about anyone and anything that wanders into their claimed territories.
    My point is not that the Forlorn are typical Bretons. No. Clearly they are not; they've got their own identity. But what does the emergence of such strangeness suggest about the other Bretons? We ought to expect a hell of a lot of variety. And conflict spawned by that variety.
    High Rock was easily conquered by Tiber Septem because they were so divided, and divided we should expect them to be. Noble knights and heroes, dangerous wizards, foul and bizarre sects, obscure gods, greedy merchants, lots of stranger suspicion and insularity, lots of small-scale wars, alliances and betrayals, vendettas, various avatars of god-beings wandering about, monsters and villains. An adventurer making his or her way through such a tangled land of plots, hostility and magic should expect a rough reception almost everywhere. The descendants of mixed elves and humans, half-breeds, will not be happy to embrace other races with open arms. Or even each other.
    Medieval Briton does offer a useful template, with oft-warring Anglo-Saxons, Britons, Celts, Norsemen and descendants of Rome all struggling to carve out their own kingdoms at the others' expense. The Arthurian legends add strange magics to the mix, very satisfying! Bethesda could do worse than to take their cues from the swirling myths that come out of that period.
    I like your suggestions - strange costumes. Sharpening of Breton facial features, more height, slender hands. Fairies in the forests, some evil, some mischievous. High Rock should be a land of strangeness and variety which resisted the Empire's cultural impulses even as it succumbed to political domination.
    I have to advocate for settlement-building! I know you and your friends disliked settlement building in Fallout 4 and are skeptical of settlement building to come in Starfield. For me, Fallout 4 was *entirely* about building and populating settlements. My gripes are all about the execution, not the concept - especially the lackluster, interchangeable and anonymous nature of the NPCs in settlements. Ugh. I still put more time into settlements in that game than questing, and enjoyed myself thoroughly. Imperfect, but fun.
    Carving out a kingdom, building it up, recruiting NPCs, defending it, going to war... oh, man, sign me up!

      Agree.
      I'd love for someone to point out in a vid for the markarth incident. About ulfrics (supposed) mistreatment of the barbarous reachman. The imperialism book bear of markarth is suspect at best and lies at worst.
      The story about the jarl killing the man's unwed child couldn't have been ulfric. The girl would have been 2.
      They say he killed women and children.
      But well... you go into a forsworn camp there actual civilization are all violent towards you and had the game aloud the killing of children I'm sure there would be children in those camps... people don't contextualize that

    • @Urgelt
      @Urgelt 2 года назад +2

      @@r.a.panimefan2109 I actually have a mod which places children in many places throughout the world - including Forsworn camps. They wear child-sized Forsworn costumes, nicely done - and they're hostile unless they don't see you fighting the adults. If you can avoid fighting, as with an illusion spell, you can even adopt those kids.
      The kids from the mod are killable, but the mod doesn't mess with vanilla kids.
      I wouldn't adopt one. I want nothing to do with Forsworn living in my house!

      I hope they do as well. Maybe have a compromise where the common Breton looks more human, but the nobility has more elven traits. Such as being slightly taller than your average Breton. A sharper jawline, a slight point to their ears. Give them eyes that seem more elvish, but all proportioned to a humans face. Could have this translate to gameplay by allowing the player to access these features in character creation. Role-playing some descendant of royalty, or the bastard of some lecherous king.
      As far as lore goes, Todd Howard's BGS has never been ultra consistent on the lore. From Morrowind to Skyrim, the lore, landscape and races, Elves especially, have always drastically changed with each new entry.
      Point is, if BGS wants to, they can make the Bretons look as Elvish as they want and it wouldn't matter to most players.

I know part of the appeal to the Iliac bay would be seeing what happens to the Adamantine tower and all, but I feel like a more mundane political struggle between kingdoms would be really cool-- like if the civil war had been the main thrust of Skyrim instead of a side story. It would require more variety than the pocket guide suggests, though (probably a good thing).

    Being my favorite race, I'd love for the Bretons to be more fleshed out. Not much has to be added though. Maybe the city folk and common society leans in to the fact that Bretons don't really have a culture identity themselves but rather adopted one from the elves. The city caste could lean really really hard into that, following traditions even more so then elves, leading to extremely simple and conservative ways of dress, architecture, and behavior . This might be a reason that more liberal magic users would leave the cities, venturing into the mystical forests of high rock. Witches and druids would obviously scoff at such restrictive traditions that aren't even Breton made, but barrowed. It'd also be cool to side with darker magic users in ES6 or fight them as a sort of Witcher style guild. Also since High Rock and Hammer fell are so close I'd love to see redguard mage outcast mingle with Breton witches making a kind of elder scrolls voodoo magic. There's so many things to do with Bretons even with the little lore that exists contrasted to the other more fleshed out races.

    On the topic of giving the Bretons more meric features in their appearance, I've been toying with this idea for Breton character creation that I call the "Manmeri Scale".
    Basically, it's a sliding scale that appears when picking a Breton character that determines the amount of elven ancestry that character has. The farther the slider is on the "mer" end of the scale, the more elven they appear and have higher magicka and magic skill points at the start, while the "man" scale of course makes the character look more like a bog-standard Imperial with bonuses to warrior and thief skills. Besides the customization benefits, I think this would also have some roleplaying applications in-game as well, as I imagine the more ancient houses of High Rock would boast of their descent from one of the Direnni concubines, while the peasantry or even the Reachmen would find their more Nedic kin more relatable.
    Of course, ES6 would probably be too far into development for such a measure, but it would go a long way towards making the Bretons a more dynamic race in future games.

    I would love for Elder Scrolls Bretons to take more inspiration from real life Breton culture, folklore, and language. Whenever I make a Breton character in Skyrim I use the mod RaceMenu to make them look a bit more Elven, like giving then slightly pointed ears, higher cheekbones, and pointer chins. On top of that I always name them the Breton version of English names, like Arzhur instead of Arthur. Like their ears...you could make a different sort of ear style without making it distinctly elven or human. They do have Dragonskin, which lets you block magic damage for a time, but that's pretty much as far as it goes. Summon Familiar is...not a great spell, even for a beginner spell, though it does make them a bit unique.

    Bretons do really need a unique identity than just "generic British medieval fantasy". They should be one of the most artistic, pompous and aesthetic races, valuing beauty, royalty, chivalry and magic. Would love to see the elven influence in their culture with pompous snobbishness and a love for intricate, ornate decoration and magic in the higher classes. Magic should be embraced and common place in their culture and society, with most Bretons being capable of magic in some capacity, making studies of magic and enchanting common along with knighthood and chivalry. The Knights of High Rock should be like spell-swords knowing a bit of magic along with their weapon skills. Being so magically inclined it would also make druids, witches, warloks, necromancers, daedra worshipers and possibly even vampires common as well in their lands. High Rock should be a region steeped in magic and mystery. If High Rock is the location for ES6 I really hope the magic systems and gameplay get a good overhaul because magic should be more of a focus for this region.

I'd also love to reverse that description in the pocket guide and use the sort of "generic Western European Fantasy" thing to give various regions their own identity. So, for instance, Camelorn is the most purely Celtic region, Daggerfall adds in more of the French influence, Wayrest being nearest the Isle of Balfour has a more post Norman Conquest England vibe, Northpoint takes on a more Scottish identity, Shornhelm the more Renassance Italy elements that show up in Breton lore, Jehanna more Anglo-Saxon what with Skyrim being right there, and Evermore dipping into some Iberian bits. All with those Welsh/Breton elements to tie them together. A land that's both divided into distinct factions, yet clearly with some commonalities that unite them. Mongrels AND Paragons.

I'd rather them tackle one province at a time, than treat Highrock as an afterthought. If it's two provinces, make the full game about three times the size of Skyrim with Hammerfell being the larger of the two, Highrock being about the same size of Skyrim. Even then, I feel like both cultures would be watered down compared to if they focused on just one.

      You could visit every province in Arena, and a good chunk of both High Rock and Hammerfell in Daggerfall. It’s been done before.
      Personally I think they’ll do both. The only question is will both be showcased in full, or will we get one full province with a good portion of the other. I would expect the latter unless they finally create a new engine. Since Creation 2.0 is coming with Starfield, I think we can still expect limited world space.
      I like the idea of High Rock in full with the Iliac Bay and parts of Northern Hammerfell like Skaven, Sentinel, etc. The Alik’r Desert and Dragonstar Mountains can act as the “you can’t go this way” for the world border. That way the Adamantine Tower is in the center of the map, and Beth can use the new ship mechanics/designer from Starfield for boats in the Iliac Bay. Also, on that note: we know Settlements are coming in TES6. They’re outposts in Starfield, and have evolved to basically be Sim Settlements. By the time of TES6, I don’t think it’s crazy to imagine they could reasonably simulate a player-run kingdom. What better province to have a game that pushes building your own kingdom from scratch than High Rock?

      @baird5682 2 года назад

      @@sporeerops1 I also had that thought where they will most likely go with "King of the Hill" questline for settlement building, either as main part or a side activity. Fallout 4 was where there played with that idea after doing single modular houses in Hearthfire. Fallout 4 system wasn't bad, only downside was working gravity in workshop mode, in my opinion. From what I glipsed, they solved that in Starfield by allowing FreeCam in building mode. I'm excited to see that in TES 6 in some way, would be great in building a high tower for a wizard character. I wouldn't also be angry at the return of class system, with option custom class option, allowing to create player preset(s).
      Sim settlement isn't that farfetched, considered they are leading in radiant AI. If they only could solve the issue of NPC dying on a road while going to/from settlements like it happend in Fallout 4, possibly by making them essential in the caravan, that would be great.

    I agree that they should enhance the elven features a lot more. Assuming the game takes place soon after Skyrim, I’d love for there to be a conflict among the bretons about whether to embrace their more elven side and lean more towards the Aldmeri Dominion in terms of support and worldview, or to embrace their more human side and support the empire/kingdoms of men and their ideology.

I just found out about your going solo from Fudgemuppet since I've been on an Elder Scrolls break for some (maybe 4 ish) months now, letting my TES batteries recharge and enjoying a few other games while they do, including the PC version of Fallout 4 for the first time this year, which has been awesome, and such a privilege finally being able to not only run it, but run it magnificently.
    But yeah, man, I wanted to pop in down here really quick after coming to subscribe to say hey (hey lol ✌️😎), to say that I'm beyond down to come along with you on this next step of your content creating journey, and to have your back however I can & to whatever extent that I can through this new endeavor (and while I've neither played Elden Ring, *nor* seen literally _any_ gameplay footage from the game, or read _any_ articles written about it somehow lmao, if anyone's going to be able to get me interested in it, you'd almost definitely have the highest chance of pulling it off, so I'm definitely looking forward to hearing...well, anything at all about it).
    And then lastly, I just want to wish you the best of luck, Drew, and I hope that you continue finding enjoyment in *whatever* you decide to do.

    My real hope for Elder Scrolls 6 is that High Rock has had societal degradation where the knightly values of the past are often spoken about, but rarely practiced by the leaders. With the weakened Empire unable to mediate between city states, the city states create machiavellian plots against one another.
    The hero will often have to choose between acting like a heroic knight or pleasing the corrupt nobles to achieve their goal.

As far as ESO is concerned, I think the culture and aesthetic of High Rock is absolutely superb. I love how dreary the weather and overall atmosphere is as well. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in Tamriel were I given a choice, personally. Does every race need to be so fantastical and alien in order to suffice? I could definitely imagine Bethesda doing what they did with Markarth and making one of the major cities of Highrock an ancient Direnni city.
    Imagine the architecture we got to see in the Forgotten Vale with the Temple of Auriel in Skyrim, but on a citywide scale. Maybe even have royalty of the Kingdom retain some of those elven traits we hear about in lore. This city is heavily influenced by their Elven roots, taking on a more Direnni/Ayleid culture and atmosphere. With magicka and magical theory taking front and center, amongst the everyday life of the Bretons who call this place home. From magic being used to solve even the simplest of tasks, such as cooking and cleaning to serious magical study in the local mage faction. The air here would thick and heavy with the arts of the arcane. It could still have that Knightly order vibe as well, but even they ooze magic by comparison.

    Bethesda hasn't had an actual writer on staff since Elder Scrolls 3, and it shows. Morrowind was the last creatively unique setting in any game they've made. And considering they've had successful game releases without putting in the effort, I don't see that changing.
    An Elder Scrolls game set in High Rock will be as generic as Oblivion and as shallow as Skyrim.
    Maybe when/if Starfield sucks and Bethesda will have had two consecutive failed games they'll realize their formula isn't working anymore and start trying again, but that's probably asking for too much.

    My take on it is in every game, there has to the default "Vanilla Human" with boring lore and quite down to earth, since it is then up to people and role players to expand on these characters how they see fit. Why does every race need to center around one concept and/or ideology? This is the problem with Elder Scroll races, there is too much effort on distinction, and in ESO only One Tamriel made it so races could play and roleplay with the other races and provinces. I've always taken a race and put my own spin on it, and expanded on it which may be different from the default lore behind them....a magical wielding Redguard for example. I think have three types of Bretons, lore-wise, moving forward. One group the default city dwelling Breton that embrace their "Human" side more. Another group the Druids. The last group, the ones who will strive to embrace their more elven side more. Keep up the good work Drew!!
