Me and my friend are convinced that Umbra’s true power is utter replacement. The ability to completely take over it’s weilder, and the uncanny disappearance of its wielders mentions in history, make me think it literally replaces you, physically, metaphysically, and everything in between. So in my opinion Umbra is a sentient Soul Gem
I look at it more like demonic possession how the sword works in its method.. it's like a demon possessing an item then coming in contact with a suitable host
Why don't you just git gud and stop being a Daedric Princes bitch? That's why the Dwemer disappeared. They were like 'fuck this, this is stupid. We're all going to invent our own pocket dimension where we can focus on nuclear bombs and actual technology that these elder scroll bad guys have no clue what to do with. They were like the anti-"fantasy forever" race. "You dumb peasant farmer bastards keep dying of old age at 20, we're going to go invent the internet."
I totally get what you mean, ive been playing the same dark elf as my main character for years in all elderscrolls games and would love to make content from his perspective
@@thalmoragent9344 not too much lore besides that he started his adventuring days in morrowind, being a spelunker and explorer for hire and a mercenary on the side who after the collapse of the tribunal temple, left to go the heartlands in search of alyid artifacts, and getting roped into helping fight deadra in the oblivion crisis untill leaving for skyrim to help the empire fight in the civil war. Mr. Drew, I will admit, I knew only a part of Umbra's story. Your telling of it has clarified the parts I did not know and, for that, I am grateful. It is quite frightening to think a sword possesses sentience and can corrupt the very being of a mortal. However, it is quite a tale and I am happy that you told it so well and so clearly. Too bad for Clavicus Vile, though, poor prince cannot admit his failure in containing what seems like a piece of metal, yes? LOL Thank you, kind Sir.
It was also inspired by the legendary sword Stormbringer, from Michael Moorcock's Elric novels - the same books that served as inspiration for Geralt of Rivia.
Let's see, sentient black sword, red runes on the blade, drinks souls, corrupts the wielder... Yep, checks out. "Blood and souls for Arioch!" Time for an albino high elf build methinks.
AE Build idea: Umbral Knight. An argonian spellsword that focuses on conjuration, shock destruction magic, heavy armor, and two-handed. They revere the Umbrielic Hist at Sleeping Tree Camp, using Umbra to harvest souls in order to strengthen the tree. These souls they can call on to aid them in battle in many forms of undead.
It's always a blessed day when there's a Drewmora video, but whether those blessings are Divine or Daedric is always in question. Regardless, thank you Drew!
It’s such a privilege to find an amazing RUclips channel right at the start of its rise to fame! Your videos are excellent and you’re going to be big soon!
The stuff you make is wonderful, I love your sense of craftsmanship in this. I wonder how hard it'd be to take the transcripts of these videos and sort of impose them into books to put into Skyrim/Oblivion/Morrowind where they fit and make a cool little scavenger hunt mod. At the very least it'd be a wonderful way to advertise the channel lol if I ever learn the CK I may hit you up to ask your permission to do that
Tell us more dear Master, tell us about the Star-Made Knight, the bloody, the third, the blamer. Tell us more about their wicked deeds, the Ayleids. Love you brother, u are truly a legend.
I was recently contemplating on the nature of wills in Elder Scrolls, particularly the Dragonborns and Umbra's similarity to them. And then I see our favorite Daedrologist's video. Man is my day made!!.
Honestly the more about the lore I learn when it comes to umbra, the more I think it's a reference to the one ring. The similarities are just to striking.
I have my own personal theory on umbra... I think umbra SHOULD be unable to effect the mind of the last dragonborn... For the same reason the ideal masters couldn't control durnivir forever... a dragon soul in NOT a moral one and is VERY different and FAR more advanced in its design... the ideal masters could effect durnivir's brain, but is soul stood incorruptible!!! Umbra, likely can only control its host through controlling the soul as that is not a leap AT ALL for a sentient soul trap sword... and that logically wouldn't work on the last dragonborn because his soul is the same Design and make as that of durnivir's soul.....
Extend that ability to all special souls, that would create an explanation as to why the player characters of Morrowind and Oblivion where able to use the weapon.
I don't know what the general consensus on them is, but I adored the Greg Keyes books. Really wish Zeni/Bethesda would commission some more novels. All that's out there that I can find are a trilogy of self published books someone is selling on Amazon lol.
Umbra is starting to become Daedric in nature, due Clavicus Vile's essence, I guess, with how it (in creation club) resurfaced like other Daedric Artifacts.
The ultimate trickster and egotist decided to put part of his sentience into a living weapon. Honestly, we're lucky it turned out as good as it did. If it would have inherited the right bits of Clavicus, Umbra could have been a world killer even without Umbriel. Clavicus had already invested any semblance of "Good" that he possessed in Barbus, so what then was left to make the personality of Umbra?
I don't think "good" is the right word exactly. Barbus is made out of loyalty, which is kind of ironic. The greatest deal he ever made was to invest a large chunk of his power into the one friend that will never betray him.
See this is the problem with you god damned skyrim lore people. You completely ignore the entirety of the history of an item found in skyrim, you dont say a god damn word about the history of it, how its encountered in morrowind, oblivion etc. Skyrim isnt that unique…
Umbra: deep and complex lore surrounding the nature of identity and consciousness My thick-skulled orc warrior in Oblivion: “Oh cool, a sword where I don’t have to pay to recharge my magic items!” 😂
Holy fuckin shit!!!!! I have been stumped for year oh this . Back when I twas just a young Billy goat playing morrowind fuckin around with exploiting the glitches to make myself a light footed god capable of jumping across large portions of the map with ease. This is when I happened to stubble upon a lone ork. Of course I murder him and found this amazing sword . Thank you so much for helping me finally put a name to a thing I was questioning the validity of .
I love Elric of Melniboné lore... I mean Elder Scrolls lore! But really, an ancient evil black runed blade form from the stuff of chaos that is a sentient entity that demands to drink the souls of the slain, needs a host, forms a "symbiotic relationship" with that host sharing the stolen life essence of victims, and ends up being a parasite/corruptor/destroyer of it's host? Add on to that Clavicus Vile's penchant dooming his champions to slay their love ones. Yeah, definitely inspired.
From an RP perspective, it would be cool if equipping umbra would remove your more humane responses to any interaction. Like how you only increase the damage of the ebony blade by killing friendly npcs
I don’t think we have enough information to go on, but I like to consider Umbra in Skyrim a new sword, a 2.0 if you will. My head canon is that Umbra was indeed destroyed in the events that concluded Lord of Souls, but Clavicus Vile still liked the idea of the artifact, and so had it recreated, but in a way that gives him more control over it.
As you know, Umbra is a sentient sword that steals a little of it´s user´s soul little by little but, since it comes from the prince of shady deals, Clavicus Vile, could someone make a deal with Umbra to steal souls from dragons? It would be a great weapon for non dragonborn warriors.

I'm surprised by how quickly you put out such high-quality content. Carry on, mortal
It shouldn't be a high bar for you, considering how long you take to speak a single line of dialogue

Is he.... Mortal....
FOR SCOTLAND!!!!!
Umbra is by far the most interesting weapon in the elder scrolls universe. Good work on the video!
What about Muatra? Just kidding. Unless?
Umbra is arguably my favorite ES weapon alongside Dawnbreaker in terms of aesthetic. The lore is even better though.
I love how you always put yourself into the story as the Daedrologist! Makes me want to create lore videos from the perspective of my Redguard scout.
