    does the brake work in both direction ? what if the motor is lowering the load and it comes to a stop

      No, it does not work in both directions. The brake is only significant when The starter gear retracts from the fly wheel.

      Some hand powered elevators and dumbwaiters had an automatic brake that would hold the load no matter which way the torque was pulling.

      That is considered a winch motor. This is different.
