It's interesting to see how man of these neo-soul virtuosos started out playing metal. There is definitely connection between the ability to play metal and some of the techniques and sounds we see in neo-soul
When I was younger I used to associate distorted heavy sounds with speed and quickness, and acoustic softer sounds with calm and slowness. I always thought it was cool/badass to play in the style of the first half of this video. Then when you switched it up and continued to shred it, I realized that bringing the speed and technicality of rock/metal into a softer sound can be equally or even more badass! It just feels like the music you showcased in the second half was a more mature and blossomed sound/style, which might probably reflect on your own growth as a musician. Manuel! I have been hearing you and Unprocessed for 3-4 years and I have to said that to me you're one of the best guitar players of all time. Your music express complexity and beauty but elegance at the same time. GOAT🐐

Bro thank you for using your right pinkie on the pickup/pick guard as leverage. I got technique points off in guitar class in HS for doing that and I thought it was dumb as heck
Yep, I sometimes do that too, though I did practice a lot to try to be clean without needing it, I still find it helps with certain riffs/licks for stability.
I strongly believe this will soon represent the evolution of ALL guitar playing. Guitar playing will (and should) no longer be the same and it's a great thing. It's just getting more and more exciting...!!
Most all guitarists go from metal, to math rock to creating their own time signatures and finally finding their own style. And I gotta say Manuel owns percussive strumming.
Man, I don't know what the hell just happened, but when you started to play the clean part, a sudden feel of places and situations from the past just came to me out of nowere. I'm like WOW right now!
People love to hate on modern guitar players like him for not playing the same stuff everyone else plays, but forget this guy already started with the same roots as everyone else. But he knew it simply wasn’t enough to satisfy his desire to push guitar forward. And that desire is what’s keeping the guitar company alive. Guitar hasn’t progressed in a while until players like Tosin, him, and Tim came along. People will all admire him when he’s old
I love all the playing styles he demonstrates in this piece - the latter cleaner toned stuff that’s very intricate over a groove to me is equally as mature as what’s happening from 1:08 to 1:22, which is more distinctly metal sounding. Different styles of playing fit different moods. I feel like maturity is being able to appreciate and in his case play the full range of this material, rather than leaving any of it that’s cool behind.
