I still recall vividly when this game first came out. Was home from school friday evening, saw the commercial and was blown away by the graphics. Then my cousins invited us for an overnight, and my older cousin came home from work with a copy of this game. That saturday, we played through it in its entirety, using graph paper to record maps and noting places we couldn't get to. Was the best video game-related memory.
@@adre2194 It was easier to reference paper outside the game so one of the cousins can think and call out where to go while someone was playing and vice versa.
OMG!! The graph paper maps, I did the exact same thing (And still have them). I was really detailed, even mapping out graphling block locations, lolz :)
Ha! Man that's a great idea! As a kid it would've been fun making that and then using it while moving instead of constantly pausing the game to look at the in-game map.
I'm 43. Had the original console and never played this masterpiece until lately. After many hours and tons of close calls, i can truly appreciate your skill level. I missed out as a kid but am thoroughly enjoying playing it now.
Super Metroid has always been a favorite game of mine. Maybe in the top 10. Still, to this day, it probably takes me 3ish hours to beat the game. Seeing these guys rip through it in 40 minutes is absolute insanity.
@@timhowland7103 I hear you. I'm not a speedrunner but have adapted their tricks to have more fun during my playthroughs. I always unequip the screw attack as soon as I get it, because the joy of mastery wall jumping is so powerful and intoxicating. I still languish my time in the game during each playthrough. I've done most boss routes (some of which need speedrunning strats), but even after enjoying pulling off the shortcuts; I still end up mostly doing 100% pickups for the quality of time I have messing around. :)
Super Metroid has been one of my favorite games since I was eight and I still love it so much and it feels so crazy that it is still such a popular game and I can see people online that are also super interested in a game that shaped my childhood. PS this game was the first game that I was legitimately wanting to come back to over and over every single day till I beat it!
Those left/right vertical climbs ending with the little morph ball that eloquently rolls over the last enemies head, with just enough space between the enemy and roof, gets me every time. So damn smooth, so damn classy, just so damn good!
Wow a new world record on any%. I was sincerely expecting many more years to go by before we could see something better than the previous run. Extremely well played Zoast! Keep on being awesome and impressing everyone!
I've never watched a speed run of this game before. This is one of my favorite games, and I've beaten it multiple times (my best time is 1:54 game timer). I saw Summoning Salt's video. My favorite part of this game is when the music plays after Samus receives the super weapon from the Metroid and you start kicking Mother Brain's ass. It was so much better to see her get rocked this fast by a constant barrage of hits. I know that isn't the most impressive feat of skill in this run by a long shot, but it was my favorite. Thanks Zoasty, for making one of my favorite games of all time even better.
hey Zoast. you're the reason i got into GDQ. i'll never forget your alternate grip for Tourian back in the day. just, bahahahaha, gorgeous! Keep slaying and inspiring us, Zoasty! Thank you!!!
Insane, dude. sad I was asleep to witness an any% wr live, but ecstatic to see it broken by you! What a run, with a fast mid fast, too! I love this game
I used to watch speedruns of this game all the time. Didn't play it for 4 or 5 years, just finished the game again yesterday and now I'm getting Super Metroid videos in my RUclips feed again. They're always watching. Lol
Man, Zoasty, it's been a few years since I've seen your previous WRs, and it always amazes me how you can still crush this game, like an absolute unit. Congratulations on your current record, mate, you earned it, and good luck at the upcoming coop run at SGDQ! :)
The title is very clear, and I'm watching this weeks after, but I still feel like just typing "good luck" anyway. I know it may seem strange, but I do it out of habit... which, I think, does make a marked difference in the long run: What I mean is I will always impart positive energy on speedrunners as a mostly subconscious, trained reaction. Much like the button presses of the runners themselves. So, the best of luck in this run, Zoast, I feel like you've got this! :)
It kept looking like one of those extra energy tanks wouldn't be necessary, but you kept dropping just below that threshold. Well done. Probably one of the most impressive things ever done by someone wearing flannel pants.
you need to have 3 full tanks of energy when Mother Brain hits you with the Hyper Beam or you will die. Speedrunners like Zoasty truly do get the bare minimum number of energy tanks to beat the game

I'm glad ppl are hype about the competition, I just think the adversarial framing gets a little overboard sometimes. Pretty much every runner will tell you the community at large does an incredible amount of work towards any speedrun of this game. We are all feeding off each other's energy, I think, to enjoy doing this enough to continue to compete. I know I would not do this in a vacuum.
@@zoasty Nah, I was just saying that this run was WR for a pretty long time, and it's been overtaken, didnt mean for it to come across as competitive/rude in any way haha. Oats and yourself are both legends in my book and at the end of the day we're all one big community 💙
@@Cleanosi assumed this is what you meant on first read since the comment was on this video. The fact that zoasty interpreted it a little more in a personal direction tells me he'll be back at the grind for the category again someday 🤞
OMG!!! I have to say that was the greatest fast completion I have ever seen! Super Metroid completed in like 45 minutes, with no need for the Space jump, Screw attack and just like a short need of maybe 11 missiles, a few super n power bombs to open a few doors, but no need to get the whole lot!!! I have to praise you! You were superb! You even gained the Gravity suit way before the Varia suit! N no need for the grappling beam! I think Mother Brain can always be beaten after hitting her with a few 40 to 60 hits of charge beam! I can say a few more things like how you managed to make that water jump & reached the missile, n without the grappling beam when going towards the wrecked ship, n quickly beat that 1 eyed boss there! (1 question, did you beat that red boss that turns in to a skeleton)? WELL DONE!
I remember saving up my summer part time job money to buy this game in 1994 (?) when it first came out. It was well worth it. Such a great game, and happy to see it lives on in the speed run community.
