Onthulling informatiepaneel vliegtuigcrash Halifax L9561 in Wons...Friesland...
Op zaterdag 12 oktober 2019 is het 78 jaar geleden dat een ooggetuige in de omgeving van Wons de Halifax L9561 “brandend, glijdend en zigzaggend door het wolkendek naar beneden” ziet komen. De bommenwerper met een bemanning van acht personen is anderhalf uur eerder vanaf het Engelse vliegveld Middleton Saint George vertrokken voor een bombardement op de havenstad Bremen, maar ze zal haar doel nooit bereiken.
Al boven de Noordzee wordt het vliegtuig opgemerkt door het Duitse radarstation “Tiger” op Terschelling. De ervaren jachtpiloot Leopold ‘Poldi’ Fellerer slaagt er korte tijd later in om de Halifax neer te schieten. Het vliegtuig crasht aan de Weersterweg, net buiten Wons, om 22.17 uur.
De volgende ochtend wordt duidelijk dat de 23-jarige Canadese piloot Elmer Bagnall Muttart de crash niet heeft overleefd. “He was a gallant Captain and he died that we might live…”, zou de co-piloot Norman Trayler later over Muttart zeggen. Het feit dat de piloot het beschadigde vliegtuig nog lang onder controle weet te houden, geeft de overige zeven bemanningsleden de kans om uit de brandende bommenwerper te ontkomen. Alle overlevenden raken in Duitse krijgsgevangenschap en krijgen pas in 1945 hun vrijheid terug.
Bijzonder is het verhaal van de staartschutter John Duffield uit Oxford, die met ernstige verwondingen op de Duitse afdeling van het Leeuwarder Bonifatiusziekenhuis wordt opgenomen. Hij krijgt aan zijn ziekbed regelmatig bezoek van Poldi Fellerer en van diens boordschutter Georg Lotze. In 1955 - veertien jaar na de crash van de L9561 - doet Lotze vanuit Duitsland zelfs nog een poging om opnieuw met Duffield in contact te komen.
In zijn thuisland Canada is de gesneuvelde piloot Elmer Muttart nooit vergeten. Zijn naam staat vermeld op de Borden-Carleton Cenotaph, een monument vlakbij zijn geboorteplaats Cape Traverse op Prince Edward Island. Lange tijd is het exacte verhaal achter Muttart’s dood niet bekend.
De in Canada woonachtige Nederlander Pieter Valkenburg start een onderzoek naar alle op de gedenksteen genoemde gesneuvelden en duikt vanaf 2016 ook in de geschiedenis van Sergeant Muttart. Al snel trekt hij gezamenlijk op met de Friese Stichting Missing Airmen Memorial Foundation (SMAMF), die al sinds de jaren ’70 onderzoek naar de luchtoorlog boven de provincie verricht.
Samen met Dorpsbelang Wons komen het echtpaar Valkenburg en de SMAMF - dankzij financiële bijdragen uit binnen- en buitenland - tot realisatie van het informatiepaneel over Elmer Muttart’s laatste vlucht.
In dit persbericht wordt Pieter Valkenburg genoemd. Hij is één van de initiatiefnemers van dit project.

On Saturday 12 October 2019 It is 78 years ago that an eyewitness in the vicinity of Wons de Halifax L9561 sees "burning, sliding and zigzagging through the cloud cover down". The bomber with a crew of eight people was one and a half hours earlier from the English airfield Middleton Saint George left for a bombardment on the port city of Bremen, but she will never reach her goal.

Particularly is the tale of the tail archer John Duffield from Oxford, which is taken up with serious injuries on the German Department of the Leeuwarder Bonifatius Hospital. He regularly visits his sickbed by Poldi Fellerer and his board shooter Georg Lotze. In 1955 - Fourteen years after the crash of the L9561 - Lotze even attempts to get in touch with Duffield from Germany.
In his homeland Canada, the fallen pilot Elmer Muttart has never been forgotten. His name is mentioned on the signs-Carleton Cenotaph, a monument near his birthplace Cape Traverse on Prince Edward Island. For a long time the exact story behind Muttart's death is unknown.
The Dutch-resident Dutchman Pieter Valkenburg starts an investigation into all the fallen on the memorial stone and also dives from 2016 into the history of Sergeant Muttart. He soon pulls together with the Frisian Foundation Missing Airmen Memorial Foundation (SMAMF), which has been carrying out research into the air war over the province since the ' 70 '.
Together with the village interest Wons, the couple Valkenburg and the SMAMF - thanks to financial contributions from the country and abroad - come to realize the information panel about Elmer Muttart's last flight.
