how to raise a truss by yourself

  • I am putting this video on RUclips for anyone out there like myself that is in need of an alternative way of booming a truss to your top plate. Yes I know there are easier ways to do this. Budgets often dictate what we ultimately do or the direction we take. I am very limited and without help other than my 77 year old father who actually helped me with most of these by rigging the lines for the pull and guiding/pushing the truss as I pull/drag it to the ramp. Ideally this would be done with a boom if you have the money, if not or friends to help.......this is how you can raise a truss by yourself literally and you don't need a Polaris necessarily to do it...a vehicle will suffice and room behind...a winch too, but it would take quite a bit of time....this is how they built the pyramids....ramps, but not so steep I am willing to bet or with the assistance of modern mechanical marvels like the Polaris. I would definitely say this approach can be applied for 2 story as well, but the ramp will be a bit more labor intensive for sure. Enjoy and don't try this at home...

    I don't have a two-seater but that's a good job on getting that done

    Good thinking Earl.
One thing I wouldn't do though:
I wouldn't admit to the world that I'd borrowed stuff from my employer without permission.
My employer would be rather irritated with that.

It was 2 eye bolts and I had told them, they had no issue or problem with it.

Thanks, I'd be willing to bet that those that gave the thumbs down could never have done this without having someone shown them first. I never had a plan on how to raise them until a day before and I just came up with this as a possibility. I had my doubts, but it worked out and I saved money that I didn't have to spend on a boom or people to help. Still working on it now....just got the Hardie Siding shot on the back.....it's looking good.

It's too late now, but I would rather have seen a camera view of the truss going up, I know how to drive a jeep. but good for you, you got the job done

Didn't the truss company that built your trusses come with a boom?

no, FABCO has a roller truck............they are dropped and you take care of crane rentals or however. I am building this house out of pocket so I can't afford money for a boom or a crew. My father assisted by handing me a rip of wood I had with a V- notch in it after I lifted to chest height and took the stick from him.... pushed it vertical.... he then put a hand on it and I tacked it one after another. No doubt this can be done without the danger or effort I put into it, but I wanted to see if I could do something like this and save some of the money I had to get along further. I'm currently at a standstill due to finances, but all my mechanicals are roughed in and the house is dried in. Take a look at one of my last videos....when the weather breaks up here and I have time, I'll pick up where I left off and get my insulation completed and get my okay to conceal.

I'm in the pacific northwest. All trusses are delivered with a boom truck and are set on the walls in bundles all on one end of the building. 2 lifts on a simple roof. I've set trusses by myself also. Cut the bands on the bundle, go to the center of the truss and drag it across the building. Set the bottom cord 1-1/2" from the outside edge of the plate and nail every 2'. Nail a couple of 2/4 uprights on the outside of the wall sticking up so the gable can lean against it.
Nail on the OSB sheathing and raise it up. Nail the uprights into the truss. Now cut 22-1/2" 2/4's (the distance between to trusses and toe nail into the peak of the gable truss. Raise the next truss and nail it to the block. You can then go to both ends of the trusses and slide it side to side and nail it on the outside walls.

cutting the bands might be easy, but lifting 180 pound truss about 12 foot above grade is another story, that is why I put this video together to show a few people I know how I improvised a way to get it done solo without killing myself in the process or spending money I didn't have on a crane.......I thought like an Egyptian

To bad the truss company doesn't deliver the trusses on the walls. Like I said earlier, all truss companies in the pac west deliver them on the walls. There is no extra money spent on a crane. It's part of the package.

It would have been nice, no doubt about that! This whole project has been a challenge, trying to recover from a divorce and starting out again at almost 50 and keeping my sanity..........this sort of challenge/starting over with a home build, is exactly what I need to keep my mind moving forward and setting a good example for my daughter to follow. I can honestly say, I would love to build another home/duplex for rental sake...my time is limited for this back breaking work though.... 1 back surgery and 2 knee surgeries are taking the wind out of my sails for the oomph factor. Hope you enjoyed my endeavor to show my ex-wife you didn't win!

When you don't have help it's this that makes the difference between getting it done and just giving up. It wasn't much work at all really, had the interior wall up and just threw up some temporary ramp and bearing point for the walk plank inside...maybe a couple hours at most in preparation.

You challenge obstacles and prevail by using knowledge, planning and execution while saving the destruction of your body. Thinking outside the box is critical to survival and being independent. Also.
..IMHO..money saved is money earned. Persist and you shall prevail.
