I think beavers aren't given enough credit. They are intelligent, hard-working and highly resourceful. I love them!

Years ago, my wife taught creative writing courses at one of Toronto's universities. One girl in her poetry course was from Russia initially and wanted to write a poem about how much she loved her adoptive homeland. So she picked the beaver as the main image in her poem. Two things: this girl was supermodel gorgeous and she didn't know about the other connotation of the word beaver. So she workshopped this poem about how much she really loves that beaver and all the guys in the class are sitting cross legged. Anyway she had inadvertently written the hottest lesbian love poem of all time. Take that Sappho!.

Hey Tash, it's great to see you again. Three things to know about a beaver's teeth. 1) All beavers have orange teeth, This is a result of a high concentration of iron in the tooth enamel which further hardens the teeth and makes them resistant to chipping and breaking. 2) the concentration of iron in the enamel is much greater on the front of the tooth which means the back part of the tooth wear down more quickly. This means the teeth are actually self-sharpening. 3) A beaver's teeth will continue to grow throughout their entire lifetime so that they always have ample tooth to work with. Great to have you back with us.

👍 The most concise explanation of a beavers teeth that I have seen. Most people don't believe me when I tell them a beavers teeth are actually orange, from iron content. Maybe now they will. 😁

I believe the mud and the wood they are amassing is to build their lodges. Beautiful animals, and now being appreciated for their damming talents. Love your reactions. Happy Beaver Day!

Beaver teeth continuously grow throughout their lives. the mud is being used to construct/repair their dams and dens. The dams are made to make ponds deep enough that the bottom doesn't freeze, where they store wood and branches to feed them over the winter.

Hey Tash , that camera shot at the end with the Beaver and Splash ... that is what happens when you startle a Beaver . They slap their tail on the water then under the water they go and swim a way under the water ... well you saw how fast they instinctively get away !!

Their industriousness in building dams/homes is where the expression "busy as a beaver came from.

I never even knew that it was a thing until I clicked on your video. I’ve been startled many times when out in a boat fishing and a beaver has slapped its tail on the water as it dives.

  • @EffUpAgain

Their teeth grows continuously so they HAVE to cut trees to grind em. It's not that they eat it all either, usually just the bark, leaves and saplings.
Trees up to 30m tall dropped into rivers or ponds have been dragged/floated to make their dam km away. They can flood several hectares of land in some cases, turning small rivers or streams into huge shallow ponds, probably deeper in wild areas where nobody check often or hunt em.
According to Canada Parks: Located in Alberta, the Wood Buffalo National Park is the largest national park in Canada. It’s known for wood bison, whooping cranes, and for having one of the largest inland freshwater deltas in the world - the Peace-Athabasca Delta. It is also home to the largest beaver dam in the world...To see it, you must either trek for days through tough landscape like wetlands, muskeg and thick boreal forest, or charter a private sightseeing tour.
Fun stats about THE beaver dam:
Found through satellites images in 2007 by researcher Jean Thie, the front of the actual dam runs approximately 775-850 metres in length. The entire perimeter of the dam area is close to 2000 metres.
The surface area is approximately 70,000 square metres. The pond formed by the dam is probably one metre deep on average, holding roughly 70million liters. That's about 28 olympic sized swimming pool worth of water.
    Comparisons:
The front end of the dam is about the length of seven football fields.
A dump truck can carry about 10 cubic yards, so the beaver dam is holding approx. 92,000 dump trucks of water.
If we thought in terms of hockey rinks, that’s 1600 hockey rinks of water surface.

G'Day Tash! Happy Birthday Ajoobi! Been missing your content. We don't really do much for Beaver Day, I've actually only heard of it through you, lol. I live in the country so we see the beavers quite often. Just watch from a distance or as they swim by. Their dams can get pretty big so I imagine there would be a few in there, mostly family. Good to see you back. 🤩🦫🦘

Beavers don’t actually eat the hard wood of tree trunks, they only chew through them to fell trees to get at the smaller branches for the leaves and tender bark. They don’t hibernate during the winter but live in their lodges which have a dry room in them above the water. They have an underwater entrance that allows them to swim out under the ice and feed off of the vegetation and felled tree branches that have been dragged under the surface in the warmer months. The lodges may look abandoned and covered in snow but the inhabitants are quite active. Even in warmer seasons the entrances to their lodges are only underwater to protect against predators.

Tomorrow in Niagara we are celebrating a 100% total solar eclipse. People are coming from everywhere and hotels are ripping people off. I'll just watch from my front porch. A once in a lifetime event for most people. I flew back from Vancouver on Thursday and the guy beside me compared seeing a more common partial solar eclipse to a total one is like going to a movie at an IMAX theatre but sitting in the parking lot! Birds roost, animals think it's night, flowers close and the temperature drops @10 degrees. The sky will look like it has a big black hole in it. Now we have to hope for clear skies. I bet the beavers will go into their lodges. 😁

The beaver fill in the holes in their houses (underwater) to make it sturdier and more comfy home. Some of their homes and dams are incredible feats of engineering. Sometimes they block a good sized stream right off, and it can take dynamite to take the dam out. They also carry branches of leaves and tender twigs down into their home, for food.

Hi Tash, the city was Saskatoon, there is a fellow named Mike there who has been videoing one particular beaver family there for a few years. The mud they were carrying up to the shore was for scent mounds, they pile the mud then mark it so other beaver groups know that is their territory. They don't build dams on that river as it is plenty deep enough for them to safely get in and out of their lodge especially when the river ices over. I did not know it was International Beaver Day, thanks for the sweet shout out to our industrious national animal ❤️

  • @cheryla7480

That big splash at the end was from a tail slap. They put a lot of energy into it, and if you are near a lake or river, there is no mistaking the sound. The reason for the orange colour in a beavers teeth is that they have iron in their enamel. Like our blood looks red because of the iron, that’s why the colour for their teeth. Most rodents have magnesium in their teeth. The iron causes the beavers teeth to be stronger and more resistant to acid.

Welcome back! I've missed you lately. I wasn't aware there was an International Beaver Day. It seems like more of a national thing. There's a beaver lodge in a pond near my home (on the edge of town) and you can occasionally see them swimming there. When you see trees they've cut down the stump is often quite a bit higher than you'd expect, so I guess they stood up to cut these. The tails are sometimes as long as the animal and yes, they're pretty solid. I wouldn't want to be slapped by one. They aren't much of a nuisance unless you live along a river or pond and you don't want your trees to be eaten. They're mostly a "live and let live" kind of animal and keep to themselves for the most part. We lost a Second City cast member the other day, Joe Flaherty died at the age of 82. Perhaps you could find a clip of him doing Count Floyd on SCTV as a tribute? Glad you're back.

A beavers tail has many uses besides a warning device. They use them as a rudder for steering when they swim. They use then like a “ prop stool “ for sitting and standing on dry land. They are also used to store fat to get them through the winter. They eat more in the fall as do bears to build up that fat layer.

Thank you for sharing. I didn't even know there was an International Beaver Day, i feel ashamed. My daughter has a natural talent for taking incredible photos anď while visiting Niagara Falls she took a beautiful picture of a rainbow just off the falls. The picture after it was developed showed the beautiful rainbow, a partial look at the falls and unbeknownst to her a beaver who was building a dam., it was one of her best photos. Beavers finally came back to our county where I live after many years of being away but people were complaining cuz of the dams they were building weŕe causing some kind of problem and they reluctantly had to destroy the dams. I haven't heard anymore about them in the last couple of years so i don't know if they moved the beavers elsewhere.

I remember one time i was out fishing by myself in the boat, found a nice calm shady bay to relax in, just finished smoking a joint, the scene was just perfect, so quiet and peaceful, then out of nowhere a huge beaver surfaced and slapped his tail on the water, scared the crap out of me!!! 😂 i didn't even see it coming, had my back turned, he slapped, then i watched him swim away, almost like he was laughing at me!!! ✌🇨🇦

My brother had a similar experience (that I've retold here a while ago, but what the hell, lol). As kids, we once accidentally mutually ambushed a beaver while were out canoeing with our mom early on a very quiet morning... mist on the water, loons calling, you know the deal. The beaver came up right next to us just off the port bow while my brother was paddling on the starboard side. Mom (in the stern) and I (amidships) had about a second of warning before her tail came down and it still startled the hell out of us. My brother, who obviously couldn't see her at all and was within four feet of her, almost ended up in the lake!

Beavers can be a nuisance. A few years back we had a family take up residence in a pond alongside the road in our community. They damed up the out flow . The water went up about 120 cm . It was left a little too long and when the wildlife officers broke the dam apart it ended up washing out a section of the road. Which cut us off from the rest of the community. It used to take me 5 min to drive to my moms house, the washout made that a 20 min drive. You can still see the affect on the trees around the pond. Glad you are back. Missed ya ! ✌️💕

Some stupid politicians back in the day even put forward an idea to putting the beaver image on the back of a 5 cent coin. We do not have Beaver Day in Canada.

  • @rickncam3

Cannot have beavers as pets in Canada - not enough fire hydrants to go around. Besides they would eat the furniture and scare the cat or dog. Can you imagine your pet competing with those teeth at meal time. But the beaver in the wildlife is a bit of a snob, they don't even acknowledge you when you shout at them. They just carry on gnawing and building, and rarely stick around for photographs. Ironically, so Canadian and unCanadian at the same time. But say anything derogatory about our beaver and you got a fight on your hands. The beaver ain't perfect, but he is Canadian.
