Australian viewers loved Tony because he took us on. We appreciated a person who could take it and give it back to us a bit. The summer cricket telecasts just aren't the same without him.
+Brad Smith He mellowed so much the older he got and really showed hhow much he knew about the game. Definitely one of the greats of the commentary box.
Tony Greig .... The greatest commentator of all time. I am 34 years old now, and have grown up on him ever since I can remember first watching WSC in the very early 80's.
Bill Lawry has just announced his retirement from commentary. My heart is crying. RIP cricket commentary :( !!! Its all happening here at the MCG 😭😭. Ohh Bill..!!!
Also the Allan McGilvary commentating on the ABC they knew how to commentate. They didn’t think they had to talk every second. It is a great pity that some of the current commentators , just do not STOP and think , before they engage their voice.
Thanks tony for your services i used to watch early morning matches in 90s being a kid with little knowledge of English in Pakistan i learnt English because of you sir i am 35 years now these commentators will remain in my heart forever ❤ what a beautiful era that was and tri nation serieses boxing day tests every year we use to wait for that i miss those days! love for tony grieg karachi Pakistan.
its going to b 2019 in less than a month..I miss the times u guys shared in the commentary box & the voices which i heard on TV were truly beautiful..time just flew by
It’s funny how the 12th man makes him out to be a bit of a dunce. But bill seems like a intelligent man but also very warm and kind man. I miss the nine boys in summer
My God...Cozier/gregg/lawry/beanu.... channel nine theme ...wow will stay with me till the end of my days....i have tears in my eye's...RIP to these kegends who made cricket beautiful sport for us....
There should be statues of Tony Grieg and Kerry Packer outside Lords. They changed cricket....much for the better. Bill...probably the best cricket commentator alongside Richie and Tony Himself
I cannot imagine the toffs at Lords / MCC eating that much humble pie. They created hell for the Packer movement at the time. Greig and John (Strop) Cornell were absolute great lieutenants for KP. As DKL and Chappelli state to this day, every player in today's game owes a depth of gratitude to those men who took up their cause
I hated Kerry Packer, I hated Tony Grieg, I hated that he played - as a South African - for England and then, "World Series Cricket". I hated Bill Lawry, I hated Ian Chappell (all the Chappells) I hated that they (the MCC?) conceded to this and made him captain, and then, as an insult, he not only deserted them, he actively sought ways to encourage others to desert too. They did OK, the rich guys, and the first generation of West Indians too. But it didn't last. By the 80's the West Indians were doomed, even though a whole generation of superstars were propelled forward, it would take 15 more years to bare the result. My world view, as a little guy, was shattered in 1977, after I had watched the thrill of the centenary test at the MCG, only for my Grandpa - devastated - that conditions for the country's cricketers were not good, and that they would leave. I was 14 and I was just forming - had just formed my ideas, and it was gone. My heroes were whores. And now I am fully a whore in this world. Talk about Willie Wonker and his chocolate factory, but this was a hundred years!
Richie Benaud is impossible not to like and respect - impossible. So I was flummoxed. How could he be so traitorous? Cricket - as we know it - is seriously under threat, now in 2016. We love tests and the legacy they enshrine. There was never anyway the West Indians were gonna be able to pay Packer wages. I do not think Packer saved cricket - but he did propel it in the short term, but at great expense. Television money - remember - was the motive.

I'm South African and we always love to hate anything Australian in sport BUT this guy is my all time fav! Grew up on his commentary! "Bowled him!"

Cricket has not been the same since Tony Greig's passing.
Signalling his own boundary 4 against Lillee (?). Absolute gold. Surprisingly never seen any other batsman copy it.

Lawry's silly face - like an illustration from a Roald Dahl children's story!!
And such a boring, unoriginal commentator.
