One of the terrible things about getting older is that those you love and those with whom you associate your youth with slip away forever. RIP Tony and Richie!
Yeah mate...I'm 44 ..lost a few Uncles and Aunts..few older brothers..cousins..when your young u reckon they will always be around..doesn't work that way with life
I wonder if kids growing up today, will be quite as 'attached' to the voices on the radio that we were, that we grew accustomed to, almost like the furniture in your home, Jonners, Trueman, Arlott, Benaud, CMJ all gone, familiar, conforting voices that made you think nothing else was going on in the World, other than the match they were commentating on
Yeah, I think the ABC got the crop of ex-players that are the more charismatic commentators coming up. Clarke, KP, even Warne (as much as I like him as a commentator) just don't compete with the voices of our summer for what seemed like forever, and probably was my entire life until they passed away.
Same. When we lost Tony Greig in 2012, it was just not the same. And Richie joined Greig in heaven in 2015. After 9 lost the cricket, it was never the same. Nine decided to opt for the tennis instead
Growing up during the 1990s in the former Australian Territory of Papua New Guinea and watching the Channel 9 telecast of cricket during the Southern Summer school holidays was great with such commentators. My brothers and I used to joke about Tony's key test of the pitch, saying one of these days he's going to say, “Oh, dear! Looks like I'll be thumbing a lift home in Bill's car. Just broke me car keys in the pitch!"
Now I am in my 30s and I grew up listening to his live commentary and I am sure there will be never be any impactful, cheerful commentator like Sir Tony Greig.
Tony Greig with the revolutionary Channel 9 cricket Comm team was what set the standard. His energy was just awe inspiring and amazingly, he came Frm SA. What a loss during the apartheid era , what a gain to the world. If you had to leave him behind the mic , there wasn't a need to figure out who it was. His voice was just memorable. RIP Tony.
The best thing about Richie and Tony as they always enjoyed the cricket regardless who wins - they always clapped then a good ball was hit. Thats why I love cricket.
Its a goodbye to; Anthony William Greig (29/12/2012) Richard Benaud (10/4/2015) Maxwell Walker (28/9/2016) Rodney William Marsh (4/3/2022) Shane Keith Warne (4/3/2022)
And boy did Richie give it to the Aussie Team about the underarm ball against The Kiwi , I was embarrassed to be a Aussie that Day , and what about Sandpaper Gate , that when I Glad Richie not with us now, he would have Been totally Discussed Pss Smith , Warner would not played for Australia again if I was in Charge , and What about poor Bancroft , do as you Are told or you will not play for Australia Again , well that Happen !! Little Bastards Smith and Warner to Much money 💰 now in the Game
Agreed, Benaud was the one, spearheading a group who were the voices of cricket for a generation of fans. Can you imagine life without Blowers?! Then Gower took over as point man, with his own crop of commentators. Now he, too, is gone from our screens, and we see yet another new group coming in. Such is life.
Beautiful tribute from a legend (RIP Mr Benaud). I loved watching cricket in the 70s and early 80s but sadly cannot take to it now, perhaps it's me and not the game itself. I'll always have my memories though of Richie, Ian, Tony 1 and 2, Frank, Bill, Keith, Max, Fred and anyone I missed. Too many beers since then.
Wonderfully narrated tribute by Richie. I must say this , every single cricketer who had earned millions or right now earning millions by playing cricket for their country/club/franchises plus sponsorships, endorsements, etc.. are indebted to Tony because Tony is the fearless leader who took the lead to get a fair pay for cricketers.
Benaud, Greig, Cozier & John Arlott are all voices that resonate Cricket. Voices you listened to under the duvet as well as during the day. They brought the love of the game into the lives of those that listened 😢 RIP to them all.
Couldn't agree more. If only present day commentators, mainy employed by Sky possessed any of the attributes of the aforementioned. Its hard listening to cricket these days, even harder to watch it unless the sound is turned off.
Fantastic tribute. I feel so blessed to have been a kid growing up in the 70's listening and aspiring to play cricket. The commentators and the players back then were and still are my idols.
Tony Greg would have been the greatest coach. His knowledge of cricket and particularly the technical aspects of batting was immense.A great cricketer .
Tony Greig, Richie Benaud and Bill Lawry, Robin Jackman, Michael Holding, Mike Haysman, Harsha Bhogle, Mark Nicholas The list goes.. Incredible commentators
To be fair to Greig. He left South Africa before the sports boycott (several years before). He signed for Sussex in 1967 a full 3 years and some months before the sport boycott. He wrote a letter to his father at the end of the 1967 season telling him he was going to play for England - though he did go back in the English Winter for 2 years to play 1st class cricket in SA - he had already committed to England apparently setting himself a 6 year time limit to make it into the team. There were many SA players who came to England after the boycott. La Roux. Lamb, the Smith brothers, Rice, Curran (father of Sam and Tom) and many more. Wessels went to Australia etc. Greig had made his mind up to leave SA well before the ban - when SA had their own test side and were playing regular test cricket and the idea of a test ban for the nation seemed very far fetched and unlikely. In my mind at least, that is to his credit. In fact I saw him sitting at Worcester one day in the 1970's having a very long chat on the barriers in front of the New Road stand with Basil D'oliveira that ended with "Baz" putting his arm around Tony's shoulders. "Man hugs" in those days were not at all as common as they are now. I don't know what was said, but I remember it surprised me. The memory stuck with me 40+ years.
Greig, Benaud, Lawry..these are the voices I think of when I think of Australian cricket on tv. Their enthusiasm fed my own enthusiasm, and became part of TV watching DNA. Every other cricket commentator was and is measured by the bar they set for enthusiasm, humour, fairness and insight
He was the voice of my childhood. Loved listening his commentary on radio or during the regular channel 9 broadcasting. Still think no one has been able to fill the void that was created after he left. Well played, Tony! Rest in peace, sire!
Great tribute and memorial. I go back to the days of black and white TV and ABC's Norman May commentary of the Tests and Shield games (no shortened games then) but the addition of Richie, Tony and Bill produced a great progression in TV viewing. We must not forget Maxie Walker for an outstanding contribution also.
Grew up listening to these guys in my childhood. Hearing Ritchie's words makes my eyes teary. It's unbelievable, I never met or saw these guys yet I feel such a bond.
Oh sad to see this video. He was a great lover of Sri Lankan cricket. Its a wonderful tribute to a legend of all time. "May he attain supreme bliss of Nibbanana"
Wonderful tribute.. Still remember Tony talking about Sachin's Desert Storm innings... He made a Few phrases his own.. "They are dancing in the isles" or "Thats a Bigy"... He always loved aggressive cricket.. Boy he would love to watch the English play bazball.
Pioneer of the cricket revolution....Tony and Kerry made cricket better with World series cricket, the white ball, pajamas(coloured uniforms) and underlights.....
If you went into a department store that sold Cricket commentators and said I want to buy the very best that you’ve got they would say I can offer you “The Ritchie” or if you prefer a double act how about “The Bill and Tony”
Often wondered how long Greig would have played for England had it not been for Packer. Doubt Botham would have made his test debut in 77, maybe 12 months later but there would have been room for both of them in the England side. My guess is he would have played and played as captain until the 1980 home test against Australia then retired at the age of 33

Voices of summer in my childhood.

Superb
Both sadly missed.
Ritchie was the best sports commentator ever.
And yet Fiona Barnett mentioned him in her video at Bathurst all those years ago. The world ain't what it seems!

A true friend for Srilanka ,R.I.P
Treated appallingly by Sussex at the outbreak of World Series cricket. Great guy and took his sacking with dignity. Great man.

Max, Richie, Tony, Channel 9. Great times and memories.🇦🇺

Benaud was the best cricket commentator of them all. Good cricketer as well.
Both out. Thanks for the brilliant memories chaps & the fun too.

Richie and Tony, voices of my childhood
Always represented what was good, fair and just in cricket.
Lovely tribute from the late Mr Benaud. Sadly there will be a few more of these in the coming years as the golden voices of cricket are silenced. RIP

Tony Greig what a great commentator he was. Really missing Tony

Tony loved srilanka
