      Agree, his knowledge, humour and the fact that he would give his opinion. To me the greatest sports broadcaster ever, suited cricket perfectly. Also see Barry Davies for football, Peter Alliss golf and Cliff Morgan Barbarians v All Blacks 82.

      Agreed... And atm there are no legends to take their place. These days the Aussie Larakin cricketer would be cut from the team for merely looking sideways at the umpire. Sledging's been banned, and political correctness has steralized the game. I could barely name any of the Australian cricket team now because they're not there long enough to know. And the only time the media talk about them is when one of them play up in a bar somewhere.

    I'm 35 years old, one of my first Tony Greig memories, was his commentary at the MCG, the Steve Waugh sight screen catch, probably the best piece of play by play to this day. He was my favorite commentator, the WWOS combox will never be as good as it was throughout the 80s-90s.
    Today's crossover commentators like Brayshaw, frigging horrible.

  • @garypowell1540
    @garypowell1540 3 года назад +4

    Tony Greig was a breath of life to beleaguered England fans at that time. England was second-rate, lacked any real fight or talent, and was going nowhere.
    they could still beat their rate teams given the right conditions and a bit of luck but simply did not have what it takes to dominate a game of cricket or inspire young fans. Contrast the current England team with that of the early '70s. To say that there is a clear all-around improvement in fitness, commitment, enthusiasm, depth of genuine talent, fighting ability and general competitiveness is a massive understatement. This is in spite of improvements in all other cricket-playing nations, with the exception of the West Indies.
    England has had their outstanding individuals since the war, but IMO English cricket has never been in better shape both at the grassroots and International level.
    What Tony Greig did was make fans see that English TMC was not just a game for middle-class mummy's boys, on a jolly before getting a serious or proper job. Its future if it had one was proper perfectionism both as a sport and as a form of entertainment.
