- Damwon Gaming's Ghost (Jang Yong-jun | 장용준) is the most underrated world champion in League of Legends Esports History. Often seen as the weakest link of Damwon and overshadowed by legends like Nuguri and Showmaker, it's not hard to see why his contributions to Damwon are under-recognized.
However, Ghost was a pivotal part of Damwon's success in 2020-21, and his career from the last-place team in the LCK to eventual world champion deserves to be recognized. Ghost played incredibly well given the fact that he was nowhere near the most important player for the team. He was constantly left on the island with his support to get ahead by himself or to stay even while soaking pressure. Can’t buy that type of player! What a G
Also, Nuclear is nowhere near as good as Ghost.
He really enabled BeryL to move around the map, I think part of the reason Damwon’s jungle/support (and mid/support) synergy was so high was cause Ghost could be trusted to still be an ADC without being prioritized
he reminded me of how bang used to play later on his career. Not great lane wise but incredible calmness in teamfights that sealed wins whilst allowing other members to carry

@@nathanhosea489 Nobody was better.... Except priviously mentioned PraY, Deft and Uzi.... And at the very end Teddy too. Also Ruler. Ghost and Bang weren't there because they were the best, they were there because they had the perfect set of skills for their team and at a high enough level to win.
I was a damwon fan at the time and that split is a dream come true. They are at the top of LCK standings, they won LCK, they are the seed 1 and the favorite to win worlds and they didn't disappoint. Just straight up won everything
saddens me honestly they wont be able i believe to make it to worlds once again. GenG and T1 are again now the dominate forces in korea.
Dk 20 is best lck team ever, so dominant in macro and team fighting. Even if you won a team fight against dk, you lost so much in return due to how dk positioned minions to take towers etc.

ghost reminds me of fpx gimgoon, he was also the key for fpx in 2019, it's almost like you don't need all superstars, just need good weakside players to sacrifice for the super carries to enable themselves.

Ghost was the one that stood out for me in 2020 dwg. The man was so consistent and reliable. Didnt need flashy plays to be effective and that's a sign of a top class adc
He was like a better and more consistent version of Zven in G2
This is exactly what Im saying, not every team needs a flashy adc. When you have Nuguri top a SM on mid, there are not enough resources for you all and playing supportive champ around solo lanes is as valid strategy as funneling all into adc. You could see that year same thing with Sunning, Huanfeng had a very similar style, playing his jhin, hepling Bin and Angel. Thank you so much for praising Ghost because he deserves that
For real, everyone wants to be a flashy carry when it's better to be consistent and stable. That's why i also like gumayusi. People always compliment zeus and keria when guma enabled them to be flashy by playing the weakside carry. I like showmaker and canyon but ghost was the true unsung hero enabling these players to do what they do
yeah, not every team needs a flashy adc if you have good players in the other roles. Same could be said for mid, top, or jg. But do you really think the team wouldn't be better with a 'flashy' adc like ruler or viper?
You always need people like him in a winning team. People who individually are good but not great yet play their roles to perfection and are willing to sacrifice their personal glory for the good of the team. The recent T1 team and SSW are probably the only teams to win Worlds with 5 mechanically talented stars. The other teams? They've always had people who individually have gone under the radar. GimGoon, Baolan, Duke, Ghost, Flandre, Crown, Bengi, vice versa.
I think it's only this iteration of T1 that had 5 stars mechanically gifted players , maybe I'm underrating looper , but SSW and T1 are the only teams that are stacked and won worlds , maybe 2015 Skt is close

You can add guma here too. As much as he is mechanically gifted, bro's playing weakside carries to let keria and zeus cook. Always the underrated player in T1 overshadowed by his flashy supp.
@@genelionhart8806 I agree. And in a bot side meta the dude has always made his share of mistakes. But not many players are like him, he might not have the peaks of let's say Viper/GALA, but on the biggest stage, he almost always steps up
@@nathanhosea489 Of all the adcs coming in worlds the only guy i don't doubt is gumas form even if he underperforms in spring or summer guy somehow bounce back and be a god in worlds 2022 was an example that varus stealing was just chefs kiss although they only got runners up guy was a highlight reel lol
I think i remember I've read the article in X, Ghost is teamless this year no one pick him up even in the lpl only in brazil, he didnt want to go there so he force to retire himself for this year

At that time lck adcs were stack and some were investing in homegrown mechanically gifted young bloods no one wanted a weak side adc also the meta pretty much shifted back to adc dominant not top side.

@@canzouxfps yes and that was pretty much his role at 20-21 damwon. The other lanes was so dominant to carry like canyon and showmaker, he's at ziggs duty most of the time.

Ghost was the best with jhin and ashe which need no flashy mechanic but wide map sight.
And really reliable for 1 vs 2 lane phase which let Beryl make a play.
Its interesting to think that some worlds Winners can often go off into the sunset never being praised, Like I couldn't even remember Baolan unless I searched an IG game its weird honestly

I love showmaker - he's the only other Korean pro other than DoinB that does off meta builds.

5:52 little correction, during LCK summer 2019 Sandbox finished BELOW Damwon, and ABOVE SKT. That was inverted in Spring, but SB finished 4th then
He was a key piece in dw, he wasn't a penta reeler like viper but was reliable in most games. When dw wanted "star" players and let beryl and ghost go. They turned horrible.

I remember Ghost from BBQ I remember watching him alot because I was a fan of IgNar at the time, I always though he was really good and aggressive
It's funny how despite having 4 players vying to be the best in the world at the time, the missing piece of the puzzle was a player that was extremely unremarkable. However, behind every successful team in any sport, including esport, you need players that may seem unremarkable but are willing to make the sacrifices to help the team shine. Players that are willing to do anything to bring success are the ones that can make the superstars truly shine.
It's crazy to see the teams of 2016 in 3:33 and only SKT and KT are still in the lck, while every other team disbanded or got picked up by another organisation.

Just watching the clip that starts at 8:12 seeing Nuclear decide to Killer Instinct into the backline of KZ by himself makes me laugh cause lil bro really made it easy for Ghost to come in and be better than him. What a run in 2020 though, nice job by Damwon!

I always thought Bang was the most underrated world champ he has one of the most stacked trophy cabinets with some big highlight reels but there will always be question mark next to him because he played on a team with prime Faker and Marin
Ghost is an incredible weak side botlane who can carry with minimal resources which allowed DWG incredible solo laners and jungler to shine he is their strongest pillar

All of them beside khan who had to do the military service most of them decide to retire from esports , not having that much success after winning worlds maybe they are streaming

Injuries and meta shifts are a thing in esports, so it's not easy to keep your skill level high for a long time. Khan started earlier than you think so it's understandable he retired (he's older than Faker). Nuguri retired because of injuries and health issues. Ghost was just bad. Ghost is the type of adc where the c means "consistent" but not "carry", without his teammates in peak form he can't carry so it's easy to understand no organization wants him anymore.
I always thought Ghost was PERFECT for Damwon. A superstar top laner, a superstar mid laner, a superstar jungler, and a shotcalling and often roaming support, I don't think Ghost ever needed to be a huge carry, but he brought stability and consistency to the bot lane.
Lock the doors cause thorin, monte and iwd are gonna come with a vengeance for this video.
I think DW at the time was great tbh, it was really ... surprising DW fans/coaches hated on Ghost so much. Ghost was literally the simple player that did his job and let his team shine. You don't really need 5 plays to always shine and Ghost can just afk in the back and let the enemies dive for him.

Was an interesting watch, seeing the history of ghost. Of all the ADC that have won world since S3, I still think he is the weakest by far relative to others that were in contention for their respective years and the weakest member of that Damwon winning roster. Although, he definitely caught way more blame for Damwon's eventual downfall than warranted. He wasn't very exceptional, but he didn't really need to be because his team was really good and he just had to play his role in it.

I rewatched 2020 worlds and ranked ghost as the 2nd best player of the tournament only behind canyon, he doesnt get the respect he deserves for that tournament because it was a bit of an outlier in his career
a lot of people pointed fingers at the bot lane for being the problem of dk once they leaved the problem got bigger. now they dont have support.

I think it was completely fair to blame Ghost/Beryl for the 2021 finals loss as they did get gapped by Viper/Meiko. However it blows my mind that DK were willing to blow up considering they were literally 1 game away from being world champions again.
Baby deft was crazy, and Ghost to this day i'm hoping is on a roster. People flame him, but he and Deft are so low-economy and efficient. I really don't like Ruler-style players who eat up so many resources, and then they HAVE TO carry 1v9. It's why to me, Deft has always been over Uzi and Ruler

Imo another extremely underrated player was gimgoom as history proved , nuguri couldn’t replace him gimgoom was often criticized but he was maybe the best player in that roster
Part of the question on his competence as a player comes from the fact that he doesn't play the carry role in a team despite his position being AD carry. His play style is far from most of the renowned AD carries like ruler, uzi, deft, etc... Also his failure after leaving DWG didn't help for his reputation.

Edit: perfectly explained Ghost’s dynamic career! Loved it. I am the biggest CJ Entus fan and remembered when BDD and Ghost came to the team as the “saviors” of the team. I’m sure the pressure was immense and difficult for the rookies. Then to get relegated back to back like that has to be career destroying if not confidence destroying for a young player. Ghost’s career is one of the rare times where hard work actually paid off versus raw talent.

Playing weak side is better now that gold funneling hyper carry. Cus your hyper carry adc will be shredded in a second while playing weak side yes they will be have a hard time but they will scale eventually

I think all of the players in damwon fit very well. It just sucks that they let go of beryl, khan, and ghost after 2021 Worlds. They are really 1 win away from winning both MSI AND WORLDS. I think it's just a bad organization move from Damwon at that time. When they lost their bot lane the team just crumbled. they could not return from their form with deokdam and kellin. and I think Beryl and ghost was farm more better duo than beryl and deft.
saying that beryl and ghost are a far more better duo than beryl and deft is a wild statement considering they won worlds aswell and even tough ghost was part of the reason they won worlds, he himself as an adc player was just below average. Deft could do what he did but better.
Damwon won 3peat in lck againts titan teams and they sweep drx in finals and quarters.. Remember it was deft and keria at bot lane and chovy, pyosik and doran at top lane yet they got destroyed 3-0 and deft was completely outclassed by ghost but didn't get much credit because of that
@@mickoalhwint.andrada8080 well Damwon was the best team by far and they rightfully won worlds. Wow congrats that Ghost was able to outperform Deft who had massive back injuries back then. Before 2020 Ghost accomplished nothing and never did again after Damwon. He got lucky to even be in DWG 2020 as he was still teamless in february and just started playing for them in week 2 of the LCK. Put any other adc in that 2020 DWG and the result would be the same.
I'm a DK fan and yes he was the best weak side ADC in 2020, but sadly him and Khan choked hard in 2021 :( and damwon from 2021 has been declining.

He had the easiest championship win out of all ADC's. He had hard carry Mid, Jungle and Top. Just think about in SoloQ when playing ADC your team is hard carrying, you have one job farm under and don't do anything stupid. This is the perfect team for Rekkles if you think about it😁😁
The weakside adc king, Ghost. This guy might not have the mechanics to carry but he will never int, and he will do his job as an AD(C(?)).
tbh ghost was the best adc that dk could have had for their playstyle. leave him on an island let canyon and beryl do their thing he wont feed given his weak side solo bot lane playstyle and still got a couple games he carried. the meta ofc played kinda well for dk as well that worlds cause you dont had to have that carry adc to even win games but i like to compare that with bengi and faker. no one would say that bengi is a better jungler than canyon in terms of carry potential but for how t1 played and how they draft bengi was the best jungler they could have asked for.

because when your top side is underperforming, there is zero carry threat. you can see how he struggled when meta shifted in MSI 2021. And how DK was desperate to get Ziggs or Jhin for him in 2021 Worlds. @@MinteeMusic

@@MinteeMusic Because times were changing. The meta wasn't always going to be a top side meta, and Ghost while reliable, didn't have the highs of let's say Ruler in a bot side meta. And also because Canyon wanted BeryL gone after that Worlds

the biggest problem for their lack of fame was their opponents during this time G2 was the strongest team in the world no doubt they were definitely the team to beat however they were pretty much not viewed as a team that can rival previous worlds finalist and as such even if DK won they didn't really defeat a strong enemy or faced a challenge as G2 still have yet to earn the respect of most Asian fans.
