I remember when I was a kid, my family and I went to have a barbecue/picnic at this park that had small rivers and little waterfalls. I was playing in the river for a bit when what I thought was a black bear stepped into the water. I screamed, saying "it's a bear!" but upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a Tibetan Mastiff with black fur. When everyone realized it as well, they all laughed and I felt so embarrassed!

I am one of the lucky people who have one of these awesome dogs. And yes, they are very stubborn and try your patience. It's like having a 2 year old who only says "No" and "I don't care." They only do things if they want to or feel they have no other choice. Mine will even sigh heavily before he does what I ask him to do, almost like he's annoyed he has to do it. I actually do not recommend the breed as a pet for most people. I've had so many people sat how handsome he is and say they want one and I always say, no, you don't and explain why. I've worked and been around dogs most of my life and my Tibetan was a challenge, especially since if they don't respect you, they will not listen or respond to you. I wouldn't trade him for anything though.
I feel ya there, I want one badly but they won't do well in the texas heat. I am familiar with stubborn dogs while owning 2 huskies 1 was a rescue from a abusive home. But yet somehow I managed and now they are more obedient then some Goldens I've seen. Hell they don't even talk back (to much) and they know when they can be crazy such as off leash outside. Indoors and on leash they are basically invisible
@Brandyjahnke3986 . Your very lucky, beautiful looking dog. 2 questions, whats he like if you see a cat or squirrel.? How long does it take to bath and dry him with all that coat?
These dogs are absolutely gorgeous 🧡. I’m past the age of working with these beauties but would so love to actually see one and just love on them for a bit. Plus my home is way too small to accommodate one. I do have a rescued Dogo Argentino from a crappy breeder who was going to kill him because he was born deaf. He’s not a dog for first time owners either due to the prey drive and stubbornness. He keeps me on my toes and sometimes thinks he’s a comedian. Wouldn’t trade him for anything
Thank you for putting that out there. People don't do their research on particular breeds and usually get one that is over their heads. A friend adopted a Jack Russell and she was stunned when the dog tried to take over her house 😂. She knew nothing of the breed and it showed.
Yeah no. Tibetan mastiffs were bread purely as guardians for monks and monestaries. They can still f**k up a bear but they werent bred for hunting. You dont hunt for animals in an area where people are primarily vegetarian lmao

They are absolutely gorgeous. Don't get it twisted, though. They are bred for a specific purpose, and if you aren't prepared or skilled enough, that's a small bear you're trying to contain.
My grandparents used to have them as livestock guardians, they lived near the Himalayas in Nepal and whenever a threat like a bear or a snow leopard came too close the dogs would go batshit crazy. Other than that they we're gentle towards me but maybe that's because I was a kid and they thought I was just a dumb human. They were also used to guard my family's temple, never letting strangers especially tourists come near.
Yup I can only imagine the food bill. Even tho it's probably maybe a third of that size if you remove the coat. Looks like it can still eat a horse and want more
The money involved is, a substantial investment; but the skill required to build a successful canine/human partnership requires total commitment. These, are not suitable dogs for people who leave the dog at home for eight or nine hours a day.. Great livestock guardians and watchdogs and highly intelligent. They are often stronger and sometimes smarter than their humans. They will make a move to become the "Alpha" and when they do, you will be tested. If you prevail, they have become your dog. If you fail, they will think you are their dog. Their respect is earned. 😊
As a TM owner / breeder myself, most of the dogs shown in the video are not a TMs, those are chinese mastiffs (cross breds -chow mixes and who knows what else), the standards of the breed are far from that. The only TMs shown in this video are in the old photos + the golden one (Ask) / maybe the white one with the kekhor (that red collar made of yak's fur, dyed in red), but I'm not so sure, because it has quite extreme coat. TMs are a vital, healthy breed, because in Tibet's harsh conditions they undergo natural selection - the weak ones wouldn't survive there and the chinese mastiffs wouldn't either (CTMs are just ,,money dogs" due to their appealing appearance), they have different coat structure (real TM's fur is waterproof, CTM's fur is too soft) , lot of loose skin on their head, extreme mouth, which leads to having a lot of health issues (breathing problems, skin infections, due to crossbreeding also elbow / hip problems). TM's were / are used in Tibet as a guarding dogs - guarding temples, families, herds and fending off predators, mostly such as wolves, snow leopards (not bear hunting like some of the comments said). TMs evolved to be agile, strong, responsible, to get their job done in the most extreme enviroment - high altitude, extreme cold / sometimes heat, etc. Please pin this comment for educational purposes. It's not good to breed a dog which suffers health issues because of cross breeding for it's appearance (chinese mastiffs).
The short should be more explicit with this breed: watch out, is the typical dog that for its size, looks, aggressiveness and very high price, attracts the type of owner that shouldn't have even the easiest and kindest dogs, less the literal hardest breed to raise and educate. They are exactly made for their original task: territorial protection. Chinese have rarely bred dogs for company or work (many are "fattier" and with shorter muzzle since they were grown like pigs to be eaten and gained a more "pig-like" look rather than "wolf-life"), thus they're very hard to train and go much on their own. They most probably will bring problems in one or more areas
