    We in the aviation world are quick to beg, borrow, and steal procedural innovations in the name of safety. When one operator innovates, other airlines and flight departments are quick to follow suit. Pilots are eager to share techniques, knowing one aviator’s idea can save lives worldwide. We are, to say the least, selfless in the pursuit of safer skies. But are we casting our nets wide enough to capture every good idea out there? The next time you board a train in Japan, you might notice a technique well suited for your cockpit. Known by various names, including “Shisa Kanko,” the Japan Railway standard procedure can be translated to mean: Pointing and Calling.
    - James Albright
    Allow me to take you along to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya.
    A cockpit view of the approach and landing in a Boeing 737-800 on runway 06. The video shows what it's like to fly an Instrument Landing System (ILS) Approach and transition to a Visual landing in a Boeing 737-800.
    Interesting facts, approach charts and actual call-outs, Boeing procedures and ATC communication were added to provide a sense of everything that is going on inside the cockpit during landing.

      Air traffic control directs a given crew to a given set of instructions that are readback to ATC and implemented by the crew.
      Whoever is the pilot flying, sets the altitude and/or speed, points and calls what is set. The other pilot then verifies what is set.

    two questions: 1. how do planes with no radar avoid collisions? 2. is morse code a 'must know' for all pilots?

    • @CallsignBookworm
      @CallsignBookworm  Год назад +2

      Aircraft without the traffic collusion and avoidance system(TCAS) rely on air traffic control, visual look outs, radio communication, right of way rules and flight planning to avoid traffic.
      As for morse code, you need to know the basics and decode as appropriate. No need to cram all the letters except, S and O.
      S ...
      O ---
      Just in case you need to send or decode an SOS (help).

Where I reside happens to be along the flight path to (15km to the airport) sometimes i hear airplanes sound like a huge truck stepping on its break with bad break pad/disc having a grinding sound. My question is what causes that sound while flying?

    • @CallsignBookworm
      @CallsignBookworm  Год назад +1

      While flying, the cabin is normally quite silent designed to about 60 decibels that's similar to normal conversation.
      We dont really hear any loud sounds but I presume the screeching sound intensity and position is caused be the air density, temperature, compression of the exhaust air from the engines.

I noticed that there were too many radio calls but no one seemed to pay attention. The captain was talking with the cameraman while multiple radio calls from multiple people were being made. Also it did not seem like the first officer was listening to the calls. How do you determine the radio call to listen to? Also is it true that pilots in one plane can talk with pilots in another plane and does it happen?
