So many wonderful memories, every artist, and every performance was spectacular. And for me, it was a life-changing event, it brings tears to my eyes, hearing it again at the age of 80.

I saw it so often. When I was five, my father played Pontius Pilate. It beat having a baby sitter! I sang backing vocals with Marcia Hines. So many great memories with those actors. A big part of my childhood.

Such a Superstar "fledgling" cast... also...
    Doug Parkinson (King Herod)
Stevie Wright (Simon Zealotes) - 11:16 - MASTERFUL performance
Michael Caton (Priest) - No you're not dreaming ;-)
Reg Livermore (King Herod - Sydney)
    John Paul Young (Annas)
Rory O'Donoghue (Thin Arthur in Aunty Jack - Peter)
Saw it at the Palais In Melbourne at just 8 years old - The guitarist on the stack of speakers starting the show - how LOUD it was - Jon English cartwheeling, the lights forming Jesus's face at the end...all etched fondly in my mind 🙂

When this came out i was 7-8 years old and now every time i hear "Superstar" i sing the song we all sang as kids in the school yard:
"Jesus Christ Superstar Burnin' down the corner in a motorcar.
"Cops come up, we don't care, we got bullet proof underwear".
Aahh good times as a kids. Yah can never get it back.

I remember seeing Jon English three times in my youth. I then saw JCS in London two years ago - this was not a touch on the Australian version - there has never been a better Judas.

I think Trevor's performance of Gethsemane here is kinda lackluster when compared to his live performance in 1973. There he is unstopable. But that's just my opinion.

I saw it a total of five times at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney. The first time was the whole original cast and I was completely blown away. My Aus mate who also lives here in the US and I just saw a production of Hamilton in Philadelpha. She also saw the original Superstar cast in Sydney. The way people were reacting to Hamilton - knowing the words andsinging along to the songs, clapping and cheering - made us think that JC Superstar was the Hamilton of the 70s. We didn't clap and cheer but we knew (and still do) know the words to every song.

I saw it the summer of 73/4 in Melbourne and it was less "enunciated" than this overly stagey musical style, and more rocky. I preferred it.
A couple of crucial cast changes made a positive impact as well. (Right on Daryl and Ozzie)

A question for anyone who can answer--is this the first version of the story that included "Could We Start Again Please"? It wasn't in the original concept album, but it's in the movie, so I always assumed that it was new for the film, but if this predates the film that's obviously not the case. Was it in the original Broadway show? I don't think it's in that album, although it's heavily abridged so that's not necessarily an indication that it wasn't in the original show

    • @JCSZone
      @JCSZone  3 года назад +3

The song was written specifically for the first stage production of Superstar, in this case the 1971 original Broadway cast production. Rice and Webber along with the director felt that there wasn't enough material for the character of Mary Magdalene in the second act so they decided to add an additional song. The song has been part of JCS ever since.

For sure, the Ozzie cast recording is the best of the main ones going around back in the day. But I used to imagine a fantasy cast version. How good would it have been to have Jon English, Yvonne Elliman, Ian Gillan, Peter North and Stevie Wright as the headliners in one show? The band and orchestra on this Ozzie recording would be my pick, they sound more enthusiastic than the other recordings.

No it's Michele Fawdon. Marcia Hines played Mary on the live album and during the national tour.
