This movie might be the most tightly-plotted genre movie ever made. There isn’t a single wasted line of dialogue, and absolutely everything makes sense within the film’s internal logic and “rules” of time travel. It’s still astonishing 36 years later. ....Dear God, we’re 6 years farther away from 1985 than 1955 is. I suddenly feel VERY old.

    • @Enkijamenk
      @Enkijamenk 3 года назад +5

Some nifty side trivia based on some of your comments and questions: A, the guy at the audition who tells Marty his band is “just too darn loud” is actually rock star Huey Lewis, the singer of the movie’s two main songs, “The Power of Love” and “Back in Time.” B, presumably, the time machine is in some sort of temporal vortex for an instant as it jumps through time, with weird effects, so maybe the pressure around the vehicle dramatically jumps, causing the residual moisture on the surface of the vehicle to flash-freeze (pressure changes the boiling and freezing points of different things), but the DeLorean returns to normal spacetime before the effect is noticed inside the vehicle. C, 2 miles is roughly 3.2 kilometers, not too far: here in Manhattan, that’s the equivalent of 40 north-south blocks, and I can cover that walking in about 30-40 minutes (and running in about 14-18 minutes). D, “Red” was a semi-common nickname for males in North America (and, to a lesser-extent, Europe) in the 19th and 20th Centuries, short for names like “Redmond” or “Redley,” but was, more-commonly, a nickname for someone who had a fiery or large personality: it’s fallen completely out of use in recent decades. E, “Pepsi Free” is actually the name Pepsi used for their caffeine-free variants when they first came out in 1982 (the name was dropped in 1987), so Marty is asking for a caffeine-free Pepsi (though since he then asks for “something without any sugar,” he may have been looking for a Diet Pepsi Free, which is what the soft drink “Tab,” which he asks for after the Pepsi, essentially is). F, “spook” was a nasty racial epithet for black people used in the US roughly from the 1940s to the 1980s, though I’m not familiar with its origins (it’s since become a nickname for spies). G, “Johnny B. Goode” is by Chuck Berry, hence the joke, since Marty is performing a song Berry hasn’t written yet: “Chuck! Chuck! It’s your cousin! ....Your cousin, Marvin Berry? You know that new sound you’re lookin’ for? Well, listen to this!” H, Marty ran over one of the two pines at the entrance of “Twin Pines Ranch” in 1955, which “Twin Pines Mall” had been built on the site of, so, presumably, “Old Man” Peabody changed the name of his ranch to “Lone Pine Ranch,” causing the mall to have a new name in the new timeline. I, they got the DeLorean that Marty took back to 1985 that he left in Courthouse Square: for eleven minutes, there were TWO time machines in Hill Valley at the same time, until the earlier time machine at the mall jumped back to 1955. ....Yes, I am extremely-pedantic, why do you ask?

good catch on the "lone pine mall" when marty gets back. when you rewatch it, notice that when marty arrives (before going back in time), it was called the "twin pines mall". marty took out one of the trees when he travelled back to the 1955 farm (which is where the mall was built).

The music judge who said Marty’s band was too loud was played by Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis and the News. He wrote Power of Love and Back in Time for this movie.
A bit of humor lost nowadays is the use of a delorean as a time machine. It was infamous for being a pretty crappy car.
Goldie was running for reelection in 1985
“Another one of these damn kids jumped in front of my car!” XD
Marty’s lucky he didn’t end up in the 60s, 70s or later when star trek and star wars were already out
Marty only needed the suit to protect from the plutonium. Once it’s sealed inside the chamber he doesn’t need to wear it
Marty returned to 1985 and saw himself going to the past. So he wasn’t watching the delorean travel for a third time with him, he was seeing the first time. The delorean was still back in 1985. It was in two places at the same time for a short bit.
They actually didn’t intend to make sequels for this movie. The car flying at the end was a joke. But then everyone loved it and basically demanded a sequel. The director said if sequels were planned they wouldn’t have ended it the way they did with Jennifer in the car

Back then, skateboarding was still fairly new. His beeping digital watch (from the phone booth in the diner) was a Casio and it was the hottest watch out at the time; but you called it "the Apple watch" - the hottest watch out now. Just mind blowing. The Delorean was always kind of junk though.

As for the Delorean, think of it as one of the characters, it will help you to understand it better. There were always two Deloreans when Marty went back to 1985, the one he came in and the one he saw himself traveling to 1955.
You’ll see two Marty and two Doc Brown in the other movies.

agree with you, time travel will hurt your brain if you let it. Hope to watch you enjoy the rest in the series. I'm sure someone may have pointed out but of course the car would be there, Marty had to bring it back to 1985 even though it stalled out while still downtown. Which was why he got to the mall later than he planned. And you have a good eye, many people miss the change in the name from Twin Pines Mall to Lone Pine Mall. Doc had mentioned how all that land was owned by old man Peabody who had a crazy idea about breeding pines, and on the 'past' farm we see Marty run down one of the pines and when he shoots it blows up a mailbox with the name Peabody on it.

John F Kennedy was actually famous in 1955.
His father, Joseph Kennedy, had been the United States Ambassador to the UK so during JFK's childhood he would frequently appear in society pages or Colliers or Look or Time magazines whenever America did something with British royalty.
He was also a famous hero from WWII as he was a child of the elite he could have avoided the draft or gotten a safe desk job in Kansas (middle of America, safest place in a war on the other side of the world) but he used his name to get put into action and in 1943 he'd been torpedoed on a small navy boat in the Pacific and saved the lives of his two crewman, used trousers as floatation devices and swam everybody to shore.
In 1958 (three years after the events of this movie) he would become a household name because a novel about the event would become a bestseller and in June of 1963 a movie based on the book was released, just five months before his death.
So Grampa Baines COULD have known who John F Kennedy was if he was a more worldly person with interest in news and current events, and I think it says something about him more than it says about the period that he had no clue at all who John F. Kennedy was.

He was wearing the radiation suit in the beginning because they were putting *Plutonium* in the car for the time travel. On his way back, no plutonium = no need for a protective radiation suit.
(and by the way, speaking of which... there WAS NO AMAZON in 1985! No internet even.)
Also, the car Marty arrived back in was stalled in the town square. He left it there to chase the Libyans. They went back to get it, that's where Doc had the car from afterwards.

to put the gigawatt thing into perspective, a gigawatt is 1,000,000 kilowatts. a 2000 sq ft house uses roughly 1000 kw's of juice a month, SO the energy required for the Delorean to achieve time travel is the equivalent of 1000 houses energy needs for a whole month.

The guy who created DeLorean Motor Company died not long ago if memory serves.
That car wasn't very good but its design became legend.
Funny thing is in early 20th Century, they imagined that nuclear tech would be everywhere, cars, trains, airplanes, boats, every little thing would be nuclear powered, radioactive materials were in beauty products (and subsequently creating a ton of cancers and other organ failures hence why it was stopped and nuclear tech was mothballed until the war and the nuke bombs and later powerplants.
have you ever heard of the Ford Nucleon project? A nuclear powered car by Ford.
Lone Pine mall, remember when he jumped to 1955, he bumped into a young tree with the DeLorean, it was one of the two Pines from the grumpy guy's lawn that later became the mall. So in this new timeline, there is only one pine.
You should definitely watch the other two movies, they work as one.

Michael J. Fox was the first choice for this movie however he was too busy filming one of the biggest sitcoms of the 80s this being ‘Family Ties’ so due to his commitment to the show the show runner Gary David Goldberg didn’t allow him to do the movie so an actor called Eric Stoltz was hired however he was too serious and didn’t have the comedic energy they were looking for so they once again asked the show runner of ‘Family Ties’ if Michael could do it and he agreed so long as he was committed to filming the show in the day and film Back to the Future at night
So they had to reshoot all of Marty’s scenes with Michael J. Fox and he would only get about three hours of sleep a day due to his heavy schedule

There's still one Delorean in the altered 1985 as Marty McFly comes back with it. So there are two Delorean cars and two Martys for a brief period of time, because Marty went back to 1985 10 minutes earlier than the moment in which his "other self" had left. Time traveling paradox, you know

Don't worry, Star Wars will be released 22 years after George met Darth Vader, so maybe he'll just think George Lucas met the same alien and that that alien liked to hang out with guys from Earth named George.
The Mall changed from Twin Pines to Lone Pine because when he went back to 1955 he ran over one of the pines with the DeLorean when they were still little shrubs and nobody planted another one, so he started changing things form the first minute. The DeLorean was there for Doc to drive because Marty came back with it from 1955, so that's the car that went through everything just like Marty. The "younger" car went to the past thought at some point there were two DeLoreans in 1985 because Marty came back a few minutes before his original self went to the past. For the most part they put a lot of thought into how the timelines connect and everything mostly makes sense if you pay attention.
And yes, you do have to watch the two sequels. They're just as good as this one.

Jerry Lewis was a comedic actor and performer. He was in the original The Nutty Professor movie that the Eddie Murphy movie is a remake of. Ronald Reagan was President of the United States from 1981 - 1989. Before that he was a popular governor of California. Before that he was indeed an actor and movie star. In 1955 he was married to his first wife, Jane Wyman, who was also an actress. They divorced not too long after that and Ronald later got married again to Nancy, who was wife the entire time he was governor and then President and until his death.
Both songs The Power of Love and Back in Time were written and performed by Huey Lewis and the News for this movie. Huey Lewis (no relation to Jerry Lewis) was seen in a cameo in this movie as the teacher who said "You're just too darn loud."
Pepsi Free was a caffeine free version of Pepsi available in 1985. Tab was the first low calorie cola (it used saccharine which is the stuff in those pink sweetener packets of Sweet n Low if you've ever seen them. They all have warnings printed on them that saccharine has been known to cause cancer in lab rats). Neither of those colas were around in 1955.
The DeLorean Doc and Marty had at the end of the movie was the one that Marty came back in with the lightning strike, the one he left by the court house because it died out again. So for a brief period there were 2 Deloreans in 1985, like there were 2 Martys.
Doc and Marty only needed to wear the radiation suits when they were handling plutonium outside of its case. They just hadn't taken them off yet when the Libyans showed up.
One of the first time travel movies is The Time Machine from 1960, based on the book by H.G. Welles. There were other movies that had time travel before then, but they were mostly B movies or movie serials, The Time Machine was one of the first to do it seriously and really well.
Back to the Future parts II and III are great and highly recommended!
Some other fantastic time travel movies:
    The Time Machine (1960)
    The Time Machine (2002)
    12 Monkeys
    Looper
    Primer
    Predestination
    The Time Traveler's Wife
    About Time
    Groundhog Day
    Source Code
Edge of Tomorrow (Live, Die, Repeat)
    Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
    Frequency

I could be wrong but you seemed like you thought Loraine knew who Calvin Klein is. She didn't. She just thought that was Marty's name because it was written on his underwear. Although the real Calvin Klein was about 18 at the time... but he didn't start his company until 1968.
I don't know if anyone commented on this yet but you were forgetting how Marty got back to the future. His time machine came back from 1955 but it stalled out on the street by the clock tower. He ran the rest of the way to see himself go back into 1955. THAT car was there the whole time. That was the car we saw at the start of the movie that backed out of the truck. There is still the one that is stalled out by the clock tower.

A gigawatt is equal to one billion watts, and most of us are familiar with a watt. The light bulbs in our homes are typically between 60 and 100 watts. So 1.21 gigawatts would power more than 10 million light bulbs or one fictional flux capacitor in a time-traveling DeLorean.
