I built a pancake SSTC, and it's terrifying! This was a pivotal point in my passion for plasma. After a full month of construction, involving the input from two experienced individuals, i've created the ultimate Tesla coil. Also, RIP to all the IGBTs. Sorry but not sorry. @tparks 2 года назад +5

@@ajay6225 Yeaup, could get a 1 ft arc out of it. I used a 15kv 60hz neon sign transformer as the source, which fed into some small copper tubing that I used as the primary. Used a lot of magnet wire wrapped around a PVC pipe as the secondary. For the toroid, I used a couple aluminum pie plates back to back with flexible dryer vent around the outside. Then wrapped all of that in aluminum tape. I used 5 or so short pieces of larger copper tubing on a flexible platform as the spark gap. I don't remember the capacitors I ended up using, but definitely remember popping a few doorknob caps in the process. Man those things smell! Also forgot to bleed the charge from those caps once and that hurt pretty good! Only did that once though!! 😁

Tesla coil technology has been around for over a hundred years, and the basic design has not changed much. However, a new way to use IGBT transistors to replace the spark gap has made it possible to build a Tesla coil that can generate free energy.
The traditional way of building a Tesla coil is to use a spark gap to create the sparks that flow through the coil. This approach is no longer necessary with IGBT transistors. By using IGBT transistors, it is now possible to create a Tesla coil that can generate more than enough energy to power itself.
This new approach to building a Tesla coil has the potential to change everything. With this new design, it is now possible to build a Tesla coil that can generate free energy.

One of my favorite videos of yours! I’ve been building SSTCs and DRSSTCs for almost 8 years and my journeys in electrical engineering and physics are similar to yours and I’ve loved your videos from the very first one. So I’ve been waiting a long time for you to do a video showing the experience of building an SSTC, the highs and lows, joys and pains, ecstasy and pure hellish torture. I’ve built 14 coils now and your vid hit the experience perfectly (hit it right on the head with a bloody hammer), the pure madness and frustration of blowing up dozens of pricey components for weeks on end and the indescribable elation of getting those beautiful arcs at last, you got me fired up to build another! Thank you so much Jay for the beautiful and inspiring productions that just keep getting better and better.

I definitely want a board!!!!! Very well done on your build! The GDT is quite finicky when pertaining to SSTCs, I have built a full DRSSTC driver that actually works and looks and sounds like yours!! Also I would highly recommend installing decoupling caps as close to the gate driver IC, by as close as possible I mean literally solder the cap directly to the pins of the IC. This will help keep out high frequency noise from the rails but also be able to deliver the high pulse current required for the GDT driver IC.

Have a pre-wound secondary that is just itching to be driven but since I'm somewhat of a novice and I find it somewhat intinidating and have been putting it off. Would love get one of these boards to "spark" life back into that build and give my confidence the "jolt" it need to finally build an impressive coil!! If not, maybe you would consider selling the bare boards seeing you supplied the schematic? I can do my own PCBs but routing the traces to reduce noise and proper operation is everything!

That's a great-looking coil! I love the compactness. Can you share the coil details? Pri/Sec. Wire gauge, ID/OD, turns? The PCB is a nice touch. I'm now envisioning a purely cylindrical design, round case, round PCBA. Again, very nice work.

Sorry for such a silly question its just confusing on this side of the screen. Lol

I have had the exact same thoughts for the past 5 years or so about SSTCs never really liked them for some reason. But whenever I got deep into research I always found some old guys making huge arcs in their garage with SSTCs. Now that you also made a video I might aswell give it a try!

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  2 года назад +1

The trick with SSTC arcs, is they tend to produce arcs much longer, however, those sparks are an optical illusion. They are composed of hundreds of smaller bursts building on one another. Trick tricky little hobbitsis...

I was thinking on that disc coil before to use it as a voice coil to speakers or like a motor winding if you put 1 neodym magnet on top and 1 on boton ; the movement will be right and left so the "cons" of the speaker will be on sides(those cons will be flat at the edge with the coil side) ; also for the motor is gonna work as a piston

Hey there! I have been having a lot of fun with HV stuff! I recently finished a SGTC made from mostly all dumpster diving material. I ran across a NST that works fine, and that was my inspiration. Eventually I had gathered everything and built the coil. It works, but it's proving difficult to track down the perfect tune. You said they're finicky!
Anyway, your channel is one of the best and you have my vote! If I get a pcb, when I'm done making the SSTC, I will sneak it over to the neighbor's yard and set it up on his cactus! He will be getting up in the dawn hour sometime and be out on his porch waking up with a cigarette and his coffee... when suddenly....! To be continued...

@@PlasmaChannel not in a dumpster, but I went hunting for them and of course one of the places I went was a sign installation and repair place and met the owner. He had a few of them and we bartered over basically beer money. Twenty bucks for one with the ground fault, and fifty for the bigger one without. It was there because someone called to get their sign serviced and the guy found the problem was an over cooked, fried crow that must have landed on the wrong spot! It was still cooking it! No wonder why their sign would only flicker! He put a different one with ground fault in there and said it was all fixed. I saw the picture of the fried crow! But it still works just fine still and it made For a great conversation too! It was the capacitors that gave me the most trouble finding! I could have bought them, but I wanted it to be a free from that as possible. It's more satisfying to show off! I found, at a yard sale, four mica/silver 30Kv .0153mF caps that were custom built by Custom electronics in 2007 for some military application...I ended up getting them for three bucks each! If post a pic but I don't see how right now. They are really nice and I'm sure we're way more than three bucks lol. I contacted the company and that's how I found out about them. They were kinda chuckling about them being find at a yard sale too!

I have built some of these SSTCs also. Have you considered ZVS switching with 2 IGBTs, so no antenna feedback is needed? Another way would be to use a 555 timer as input to the driver for any number of IGBTs in parallel, and adjust its time period to the natural resonance of the pancake secondary coil (using a test light), Nothing to break then except overheating of the IGBTs! Slayer feedback overheats the semiconductors. Antenna feedback is a bit complicated.

In most videos you mentioned that we shouldn't bring any sensitive electronic devices next to a tesla coil, but on the other hand you have a video where you wasn't able to kill your iPhone with direct sparks.
So maybe you can make a video where you will describe in more details how sparks/electromagnetic field might affect different gadgets. Which size/power tesla coil has a real danger it wich are not?

I had been trying to give them the benefit of the doubt on this with covid and the chip shortages. Ok, will send text to Keysight for how they had supposed to have sent it. I really do not think it came and was stolen from the porch but anything is possible. Thanks and will be watching for your next video. Already feel a Like button being pushed before I see it. : )
