- What started as a simple desire for a brighter plasma globe got carried away and I ended up building a million volt lightning tower of death.

I found a good deal for some plasma globes on eBay so I went ahead and bought some. Sure they were interesting, but I quickly realized I needed something much more powerful. After trying the aluminum foil arc trick, I got bored and took it apart. I tried various modifications to the driver, including a MOSFET based interrupter and a ZVS flyback transformer circuit. I even tried using some way overdriven car ignition coils but still was not satisfied.
I decided I needed to build a multi-kilowatt tesla coil in order to properly drive the thing. I mean it was Nikola Tesla that invented the plasma globe, so this was the only method that would give his invention justice. I used a quad MOT, asynchronous rotary spark gap based topology. I needed 10 microwave ovens to build the fully ballasted power supply, and most of the other stuff I found at the hardware store. I did need to order capacitors and a secondary coil online.
The resulting plasma globe was satisfactory. Giant arcs shoot directly out of the glass. Other plasma globes and light bulbs in the vicinity light up due to the extreme electromagnetic field produced. Plus, most importantly, it can light things on fire. Today I have done something good, and I will sleep well tonight. Tomorrow though, and it’s on the next project…

My TV was secretly watching this video while it was off! The moment I turned my TV on, this video was playing. Right when you started smoking stuff, I had to watch the whole video, lol. I fix air conditioning and heating equipment for a living so I can relate to the frustration when something smokes. You got a great down to earth way of explaining things to the viewer.

This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen. My grandpa and I were gonna build a Tesla coil one summer but time got away from us...he passed in 2019 but he would have loved your videos. He was a HAM operator and built/maintained all his equipment. Wish we had found the time to build that coil...could have made something this cool.

The amount of appreciation I have for this video is insane this inspired me for my 7th grade science project to do it on plasma and I'm so glad I did I had the coolest demonstrations and project over all but my writing kinda sucked so I only placed 4th for the school but I am still thankful for this amazing RUclipsr who fuels my curiosity in lasers and makes me one of the few 15 year olds crazy enough dumb enough and cool enough to mess around with these retina destroyers(lasers not plasma balls)

You are just fantastic! My first electric creation consisted of building a Wimshurst Machine which produced sparks some five cms long. Of course that wasn’t enough! I wanted bigger, longer and brighter sparks, so I built a much larger Wimshurst Machine and managed to obtain sparks some 20 cms in length. Surely, I thought, there was something bigger and better, for my whole aim was increasing spark length, so I read about Tesla Coils (You must know I was only thirteen). I built, from scratch, my first Tesla Coil which certainly increased spark length to my utter joy. This was followed by a few more of even larger size. All this happened years ago, no, decades ago. Now I have the joy of seeing what you have achieved which is mind blowing. Many thanks for your fabulous videos

exactly.... these days if you do anything that requires you to use more then 2% of your brain... your automatically up to know good. i had an old lady at a cvs acting like i was trying to get things to cook meth all because i asked for a graduated cylinder.... was mixing my own ejuice... she said if the pharmacy does have it they wont sell it to you! needless to say i went back and asked them myself if they had any..... you can order the fucking things off amazon.... and anything you can measure in a graduated cylinder you can measure in a normal measuring cup..... but all because i described a different type of measuring cup.... her simple mind immediately assumed it was for something extremely horrible and acted like it was something that could not be sold... when the local krogers pharmacy said they have them for sale and i was just not near the krogers at the time. people are fucking stupid these days. god forbid you know something they don't....
it makes me want to go back there and ask her if i should act like shes trying to cook meth for having a measuring cup at home for measuring out sugar for the pie she bakes.....
btw me and a manager at krogers had a good laugh about it while he helped me find a fucking measuring cup that measured in ml's.....

There's something inherently satisfying about taking something that's ordinarily mundane and turning it into something extraordinary. That's the appeal of DIY projects, and there are few things more rewarding than taking a simple object and turning it into a work of art or a source of power.
With that in mind, today we're going to show you how to make your own plasma globe using an inexpensive Tesla coil. If you've never seen one before, a plasma globe is basically a glass orb filled with electrically charged gas. When you turn on the Tesla coil, the electric current causes the gas to glow with a beautiful blue light.
The great thing about this project is that it's relatively easy to do, and you can achieve some pretty impressive results with just a little bit of practice.
