I was searching for a Nd:YAG laser cavity for a future project when I came across a bunch of tattoo removal devices on eBay. They claimed to contain a Nd:YAG laser but at a small fraction of the cost of buying the parts separately. Skeptical, I bought one anyway since I had the option to return it if it didn't live up to the seller's claims.
Much to my surprise my unit turned out to be INSANELY powerful, so strong that it can light the air on fire! The laser head is a flashlamp pumped, q-switched Nd:YAG laser with a removable KTP frequency doubling tip for the option of green light. My estimations yield a peak output power of about 30 million watts.
In the video, I start by testing the laser against various materials, including aluminum, tungsten, coins, acrylic, and rust. Since the laser can also ignite air, I used this as a benchmark and then estimated peak power with the methods of Gaussian optics.
After destroying a bunch of stuff, I use the laser to drive another laser in a dye laser setup. Using the organic dye rhodamine B, I was able to create a beautiful orange laser by blasting the dye with green photons.
Finally, I tried giving the laser the "overclocked" treatment but my modifications destroyed the laser in one shot. oof

I worked in a semiconductor manufacturer back in the early 2000's, they had about 6 YAG lazer machines that were built back in the 70's. The lazer was used to cut traces in silicone wafers.

As a camera fan it was cool seeing the sensor stabilization after the laser strike off the reflection from the aluminum.
Very interesting video. For those thinking of laser tattoo removal. I saw a video that went into the chemistry of tattoo inks. Apparently there are some that breakdown into very toxic by products when they are destroyed by lasers. So probably best to check that out first, to ensure you will be safe, before proceeding.

As someone who has had six laser tattoos removal sessions that does not tickle. Normally they apply an numbing cream an hour before the procedure. Then they have an air conditioner with hose that is given to the patient to help reduce the burning. Takes about a week to heal with a lot of Aquaphor.
I love how his camera just gets more and more damaged as time goes on, showing how powerful the laser actually is.

It doesnt remove the tattoo, it breaks up the heavy metals into much smaller pieces so that it's easier to be removed by your body naturally.

Think: Light = electromagnetic wave, that makes electric field strength, more or less voltage. And very intensely focused laser light gives a really strong electric field which "jumps the gap" even without physical electrodes: There is an electric spark.

Remember the electric spark you're talking about is ionizing mostly nitrogen in the air which is responsible for the light emission we see. The definition of dielectric breakdown is that the dielectric material becomes so ionized that it conducts electricity, and more often than not that results in stimulated emission as with nitrogen in the air. The fact you're seeing light emission at all from an electric spark means something is undergoing stimulated emission and given the 78% concentration of N2 in the air I'm going to take a wild guess as to what is mostly responsible for the light emission.
