I work in steel fabrication with lasers and the thing with trying to blow the hole in the steel plates is you also need a cutting gas with it. Essentially all you are doing is melting it and its slowly dripping from the hole before cooling. When cutting with lasers you also have a gas like oxygen or nitrogen pushing the molten steel from the cut which gives you a nice smooth cut.
....or you could use a gas like air instead to accomplish the same thing but w/unlimited free refills for your tank too. Yes yes, of course a compressor is required... which is something any savvy shopper can easily secure for appx. the price of an small O2 cylinder fill/exchange so long as "functioning" is the sole criteria. Just sayin'....

The thermite ignition from 200+ meters was genuinely mind blowing. I honestly don’t really know what other tool would do that so easily.
Maybe incendiary tracer? But you have to worry about just breaking the container into pieces and spreading termite all around. Otherwise yeah, no idea what I could use to light termite from 200m away. Magnetrone + waveguide?
@@GerinoMorn Magnetron would need a dish the size of a barn door to even have a prayer of getting that power density. I don't think anything short of an actual fuze can get this kind of response time. It's not like RADARs are notorious for firestarting.
@@dustinbrueggemann1875 Tbh my thinking was that it might be enough to cause some sparking or plasma discharge, but yeah, probably while you can get a decent "remote microelectronic frier", prob setting termite won't happen without as you say a bloody barn of a device xD
The runaway combustion only requires a high enough temperature to get started, not necessarily a huge load of energy.
The laser only needs to make a tiny part of the thermite hot enough for a brief moment for the chain reaction to get started
Hell the fact that he liquefied steel at 70 m and lit a car on fire blew my mind. The thermite instantaneous ignition is absolutely amazing as well!

The US spent 100s of millions fitting one to a 747. Literally the whole plane cabin was filled with the machine to make the laser. Same issue as pyro had though, keeping the beam steady.
