It's been almost 4 years since you originally posted this. Do you still read the comments? Either way, I'm going to throw this out there. Dad was an electrician and in the mid-70's he made a homemade Tesla coil to show us kids, We were all little ( I was about 10) and it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Dad passed away 2 1/2 years ago and I sure do miss that man. So many interesting things he taught us. Thank you for bringing back good memories to me.

Seeing more and more attention given to Tesla over the last few years makes me smile. He is, in my opinion, the greatest electrical engineer and inventor that has lived to date.
Why didn't he become famous back then

Actually he was famous.
I used to love to do demonstrations with the small Tesla coil in my physics classes. The one that seemed to impress my students the most was bringing a long tubular fluorescent light bulb close to the coil and watching it light. I used to tell the students it was my light sabre.

The photo is a double exposure, he was not actually sitting under the Tesla coil while it was running.

Voltage, current, and resistance are all connected.
The human body is about 100,000 ohms of resistance.
Voltage/resistance=amperage
It only take around .5 of an amp to kill you.
Going by this equation it would take at least 50,000 volts to kill you.
Generally people use 10,000V when demonstrating this but that gun definitely looks like it's more than 10,000V

I was lucky enough to have a best friend whose dad was an electrical engineer at Argonne National Laboratory. We got to play with a Tesla coil as kids. We did the florescent bulb thing too where it lights up while you're just holding it in your hand. Thanks to him I was able to be introduced to a lot of cool electronics and science phenomena. Watching this channel brings back fun memories.

Well not to be that guy, but probably not. For example primitive people of the Pacific Islands who saw US and Japanese soldiers with all sorts of fancy toys first thought the soldiers gods but quickly realized that what made them special were their items, their cargo. 25 years ago I visited a 35 foot tesla coil that was burning up the points. A friend suggested a heat pipe [copper pipe with water in the bottom] for contacts on the rotating distributor. That worked. They wrote it up in the Tesla coil magazine and credited my friend.

I had the honor of witnessing a massive Tesla coil myself - it really cannot be expressed in words just how amazing they are. And it was in a Faraday cage too!
Also, that slow-mo was beautiful. It really is amazing just how much voltage the human body can take, providing the amperage is low. I've seen people shoot tens of thousands of volts through their body with no ill effect because it was suuuuper low amperage. I think it was like, 2 mA or less.

Slow-mo guys use the same camera, you won't get much more frames than that.
i thought that they just got a new camera with a faster fps and a better sensor
and honestly more frames than are unnecessary, you'd have to get way too close for more frames to be necessary and that would generate a risk of damaging the equipment
Totein not really. there's 1 million plus frames gear now and the 100,000 megapixel cameras are starting to come down in price. plus 8k and 12k and the 16k digital.
But they're able to do the same FPS at better quality

the first and only time I went to burning man (so far) they had this keyboard that let you play songs through these MASSIVE tesla coils. like large, 3 story building size coils. I bet Destin would for sure nerd out about that

has Destin done a video on why electricity looks like that where it slowly goes out and then suddenly bursts apart into branches? if not I would love to see one
Xanthanarium This is kind of a physics 101 subject. electricity constantly tries to find a path to complete a circuit. all those branches are different paths to points of moisture in the air. If you watch the slowmo on the big coil in the driveway, you see when it hits the ground, that is the brightest bolt. thats where all electricity is trying to go.
There are much more in depth explanations on this subject. Im sure you could find one with some quick research.

@MRCG Jynx nice of you to tell the person whats happening but you could have dropped the condescending line of "This is kind of a physics 101 subject" not everyone has taken physics and you have no clue how old the person is that is asking. also just fyi im 39 and never took physics, i didnt even know that answer be kind when you educate it will go further than the approach you took. have a great day :)
