Today we’re talking about how to legally fly a drone for RUclips videos and some FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) laws surrounding drone flying. After someone anonymously reported us to the FAA, we were told we could not fly our drone until we passed the Part 107 test to become a commercial drone pilot. It was a bit scary, a lot confusing, but in the end we’re more confident drone pilots thanks to some amazing study materials from The Pilot Institute. Since Chris passed the Part 107, everything was going great until we received a SECOND call from the FAA again a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully, because Chris had his Part 107 license on hand, all was good and we didn’t receive any sort of fine. Today we’re answering more of your most frequently asked questions regarding what you should know before flying a drone or buying a drone. If you have a question we didn’t answer, be sure to ask us in the comments. :)

I originally found your channel because of your first FAA/drone video. I had just gotten a drone and I was searching around trying to get more information about the Part 107 test. I decided this would be a good project for this winter and just completed the Pilot Institute course and it is OUTSTANDING. Taking my test in a couple of weeks, and it looks like I will do just fine! Happy I found your channel!

Great Great great Video! Listen, I don't want to leave a thoughtless comment. The thing I appreciate about you both is your straightforwardness and your ability to help us to appreciate the necessity for the rules, the perspective of the FAA, and how to go about getting a good drone education so that you are able to become responsible drone pilot. I have really been looking around for a quality school that can take me through the part 107 prep. Knowing that you intentionally partnered with the school that you chose to utilize tells me a whole lot about school itself. Maybe some aren't impressed with sponsorship, but in this particular case you went to them because you believed in the product. That transparency for the folks (like me who genuinely want to become good drone pilots) is priceless. In any case, I just wanted to say thank you for a well thought out and produced video. Keep up the good work!

Wait until remote ID becomes required. Under the current FAA rule your Drone will have to transmit its registration number, location etc as well as YOUR location. This info will be available in real time to the public with a simple app. That means any nutcase with a cell phone can track down your immediate location and confront you or steal your equipment.

It can also be used by businesses or other entities who wrongly think that they have the right to prohibit the public from flying over their property.
For example, there's a ski resort near me which posts on its website that drones are not allowed to fly over their property. Their property is in the middle of a beautiful National Recreation Area where drones are explicitly allowed, and where people do fly to capture great scenic video. Now, imagine being alone on the mountain and being confronted by goons sent out by the resort to stop you from flying.

Hey Russ. Can you address this in a video when you get time? People need clarification on this.
Commenter question about things specifically stated in this video:
"Please clarify about Part 107 requirement: What if I upload to RUclips or Instagram but have not monetized my content? (So, not making any money and still just a hobby.)"
My reply: Bit of a gray area. This channel states in the video that you must have a part 107 cert to post videos to RUclips. That's not true at all. It has everything to do with the intent of the flight. If you are flying strictly for fun/hobby/no intent on making money, you can absolutely post any video of that nature to social media. If you're trying to further a business, monetize said video, or make money, you need a 107 (this is called a money grab by the government). What's more, if you shoot a video with no intent on making money, and are later asked to sell the video for money, you can absolutely do that, because at the time of the flight, there was no intent to make money. Make sense? Just think to yourself, am I just having fun and enjoying flying, or has some one paid me to do this/do I want to sell my footage. We should always fly as safely as possible, and think about many scenarios we may encounter that could cause harm to a person or property. I definitely recommend the TRUST cert at very least, to familiarize yourself with some basics of being in the airspace with manned aircraft. Sorry this is so long, its just not clarified enough in all these you tube videos. good luck, and happy flying!

Good video for those who do not fly a drone a lot and this will hopefully help ours not go through what you did. As to registering a drone if it is being used during a flight covered under Part 107 you have to register it with you part 107 regardless of the weight. There are 2 types pf drone registration. Recreational (which does consider weight) and one number covers all your drones or Part 107 where each drone has a specific registration number. Also you guys are probably doing it to help speed up the video, but you can fly in national parks or even controlled air space with permission. which would probably be another 2 videos and I am sure you had to answer those questions on your test, So keep up the good work and keep those smiles going as it makes for much better videos.

I’m currently studying for my Part 107 and am using the Pilot Institute program. I couldn’t agree more. It’s a great course and this is something you just don’t want to pass. You really need to understand the rules and learn how to be a safe pilot.

If you don't plan too monetize then you don't need a Part 107. Only if you plan on making money off of your drone.

    • @WayneWerner
      @WayneWerner 2 года назад

You don't need part 107, or to register your drone under 250g (well 0.55lbs technically - www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/), if you meet ALL of the 44809 exceptions (including having a TRUST certificate).
But if you don't meet all of the exceptions then you must have part 107

There are a lot of people that hate drones. They Watch videos to just report anything they can.. there's a lot of guys that have talked about reports they got. Even though talking to faa. Faa agreed they did nothing wrong.
No faa report that I know of. But I had a guy rip me apart for flying near a hawk. While I try to explain. Hawk fly to me. And I was flying away. U see me see the hawk and turn around and pick up speed

Interesting video. Liked and subbed. I plan to take the Part 107 exam soon just so I have my options open for maybe making some money. For example, I'll be shopping for a home in the next year or so. Since I'm looking for a place in the country, I'll probably ask the realtor if I can take the drone up to get an overview of the property. Might pick up some jobs that way, and it would be nice to be ready. I'm retired, and drone work sounds like a fun way to pick up some extra dollars in my spare time.

This is a great video. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. I'm a drone pilot myself. I think Pilot Institute is amazing. I already signed up and paid for my course through Mzeroa before I knew about Pilot Institute. Mzeroa is great as well. I'm scheduled to take my Part 107 at the end of this month and I'm studying every single day and watching video after video. We need educated and responsible drone pilots.

Well done video. I have my Part 107 for the drone, but I am also a Private Pilot. I have a number of videos of both my airplane flying and my drone stuff at my channel. Because I am a Private Pilot, not a Commercial Pilot (for my Single Engine Airplane Rating), I have to be really careful. While I can legally make money with my drone flying, I CANNOT make any money off my airplane flying. No loopholes, no get-out-of-jail free card...I just cannot do it. I have had a few people ask me about monetizing my RUclips channel, and I refuse to even consider it because losing my Private Pilot Certification is not something I would ever want to risk. I know of a lot of Private Pilots that have monetized RUclips channels that feature their flying videos, but I just feel that trying to do that is tempting fate with the FAA. The FAA does a pretty good job of sending certified pilots information of hot topics, just this week there was a letter to pilots talking about the misconceptions about "flying for hire" when it comes to passengers. I think this topic would really be one that is worthwhile for the FAA to proactively issue guidance. While I don't monetize my channel, if you are interested, would welcome the subscription. Here is a Safety Video for pilots coming into our local airport here in New Mexico. ruclips.net/video/AmrAX7tSvvQ/видео.html

An important thing to note is even if you are flying for fun, you need part 107 in order to fly by different rules. Without part 107, the rules get so strict it can be hard to find a place to fly at all legally. Great video btw for sure. This will help a lot of people fly more responsibly.

That’s not really correct. A part 107 is required “in furtherance of a business” but not if you are only flying recreationally. You actually have fewer restrictions flying recreationally than you do commercially. A good channel to clear that up is Ken Heron, he has a lot of videos about the difference in flying for fun or flying commercially.

Thanks for the video. I have a DJI mini and getting the mini 2. I will certainly get the license, but before I am even allowed to fly in a particular area, the software tells me on the map and by message if there are any FAA restrictions. It's a decent fail safe. To even fly in a commercial area near hotels I needed to agree to a whole set of instructions and rules before I could even takeoff.
It is important to note that under 250g is also a standard in many other countries as well. I always do a google search on drone regulations prior to taking my drone on a trip.

I have been dragging my feet on getting my 107 for no other reason than I have been busy and there are only a few months where flying in Las Vegas, NV, is physically comfortable. Also, not many spots one can fly here without tower approval. I have not flown in the past year.
You are correct in that safety is a super important reason to get the 107. Here in Las Vegas, NV, the @LasVegasMetropolitanPolice Department loves to buzz our neighborhood below 400 feet. It happens almost every day. Imagine how dangerous that is.
As soon as we get settled up in Spokane Valley later this spring I will definitely be getting on getting my 107 and being square with @FAA.

20 some odd years ago when none of this was a concern and before social media was a buzz word with uploads of videos. You could strap a lightweight Sony camera and link to your RC aircraft and fly as far up as you could see it while recording, then watching it with family and friends.
Today with the National Guard helicopters going overhead at 300 feet, they would have been filmed going underneath it.
We can all thank Team Black Sheep for flying in the clouds, Ali Shimano for flying across the China sea and a few others for flying across their farmlands rather than getting out and driving for getting the FAA's panties in a bunch.
Most of all was their knee jerk requirements for having a real commercial pilots license to film with a drone.
I'm an AOPA member and a friend who flys for United said this was "retarded" because you need a medical card as well as spending some $10 grand just for a PPL, then another $15 for instrument rating and finally give them more money for that commercial rating, not to mention that medical card expires every year until you're 65, then every 6 months afterwards......thank God for 107 sanity.

Hello. Thank you for this video. I am a new drone pilot and studying for Part 107. This video provided great information and guidance. So, my next thoughts may seem critical, but they are intended to help. This interview video seemed to have several jump cuts that were distracting or unrelated. I humbly suggest you could use one or two more cameras shooting profile shots. They would provide better jump cuts. Also, you might want to buy a couple of wireless Lav mics. The sound, while clear enough to understand you, could be better with well-placed Lav mics.
