Yes.... that is my favorite game when I was young. I hade it on gamecube. I as lucky enough to find a pc version. Surprisingly, the game does not look to dated.

One of your main problem is that you're playing iRacing, Forza-style. You're releasing the throttle fully and then stabbing it again upon corner exit.
There's a technique which race car drivers and even certain sim racers use which I personally calls it "half throttling" (I don't know if it's an official term or anyone uses it) but what we mean by that is when you're downshifting into the corner and turning into it, once upon corner exit, step on the accelerator but DON'T stamp on it but just slowly ease it in then only go 100% when the car is straightened.
That's to help a RWD car steadily gain traction or else if you're stomping on it on-off repeatedly, the traction is gained then lost repeatedly which would upset the car and then make you more prone to drifts, slides and even loss of constant speed.

Also helps in corners where youve learned to coast... instead of coasting have a tiny bit of throttle like 5-10% and youll actually gain time without sacrificing anything.
Especially useful at lower skill levels where the driver isnt driving the car at its limit anyway.
Never coast, its not useful outside fuel saving.
