Police usually retire and become security or PI for the same reason paramedics usually retire and become registered nurses- they can do half the work with half the risk and get paid twice as much.
Security and police is a never ending cycle- security usually becomes police (like Tommy here) and police usually retire and become security.

In oregon, attorney's constantly hire private investigators to work on a criminal case that they are dealing with in hope to show they are innocent. Also I think it's so they can see if they are guilty too for personal reasons. But like I said they do investigate criminal matters often sex crimes and murders.

In my experience the only real cross-over between PI & cop work is when the better & more honest sort of PI investigation starts off as a civil matter but uncovers criminal activity that results in the case being handed over, exactly like you mentioned. To be fair most PI's I've come across have been professional and dedicated. A fair few seem to be retired detectives. Edited to add: most of the handed-over cases I've seen have been fraud or similar matters.

You missed a lot of things that private investigators do. For one we have access to the same database as most police agencies to do background checks and to do research on the claimants. For two at least in Las Vegas I deal with police almost on a weekly basis working cases. However I also work a lot of cases with attorneys and with the courts.
I do everything from criminal investigation defense cases, Insurance fraud process serving, accident investigations and many other things. Even when I do accident investigations I’m the one taking charge working directly with Las Vegas metro police trying to reconstruct how the accident happened and who was at fault. I also do SIU work. I’ve conducted interviews even in gels and prisons for cold cases.
We also do in fact conduct investigation work for missing person cases where we will go to jobs look at footage conduct interviews and do everything we can to look up someone who went missing.

15:42 Loss prevention / Asset Protection isn't always about catching shoplifters. I work at Walmart and 30% of the time I'm looking for shoplifters on camera or walking the sales floor. About 40% of the time I'm investigating safety & policy issues, time clock theft, and shrink in the store (inventory or financial loss). The other 30 % of the time I am diving deep into data pertaining to register shorts, return fraud, and other internal theft problems. At other stores like CVS drug store their LP only catches shoplifters and has nothing to do with investigating internal theft.
Been studying and will be taking the Florida C license in December so I can make some extra money as a PI.

Two additions to this conversation: When I was a kid, in Indiana, back after High School in the 1980s, there was no separate "Security Guard" license. In order to work as a Security Guard, you got a State "Private Investigator" license. The second is that there are companies who hire "Investigators" who conduct background checks on entry level Federal employees.

I’ve been a private investigator for a number of years and have almost never conducted the “secret shopper” type investigations that you describe. Myself, and the vast majority of PIs that I know, do mostly surveillance, skip tracing, and interviewing. Cases are often insurance related, infidelity, and child custody. It takes a lot of research and patience, but it’s not a boring job by any means. We usually work alone, and also aren’t confined to a jurisdiction. Which means I often begin an investigation in one city or state and end up in another by the end of the day. That said, it has little to do with the police, outside of letting them know we are there so they don’t respond to suspicious vehicle complaints.

  • @SaftonYT

Private investigators that investigate criminal cases isn't all together uncommon, but they're typically not out there actively investigating open murder cases and the like as you see on TV. Instead they're a specialized subset of private investigators known as legal investigators that are employed by private attorneys, public defender's offices, etc. during the trial phase in order to gather evidence, review discovery materials, conduct interviews of witnesses, and provide qualified testimony -- typically with the intent of casting reasonable doubt on the prosecution's case or at least mitigating the charges being brought against the client/defendant in question.
District Attorneys and State Attorney's Offices also tend to likewise have a staff of dedicated legal investigators (sometimes called Special Investigators or some such) to carry out similar roles in reverse: gathering additional evidence to bolster the prosecution's case, conducting interviews, serving court orders, going over the extant evidence with the detectives who conducted the initial investigation/arrest, and "coaching" the police officers set to take the stand on their testimony. I've heard of some also taking a more active role in initial criminal investigations within their community directly alongside local, state, and federal law enforcement. The primary difference between private legal investigators and state/district attorney investigators is that the latter are certified peace officers with arrest powers and are almost unanimously ex-LEOs to begin with -- oftentimes former detectives/criminal investigators with years of experience. My own area tends to see a lot of retired homicide detectives get called up for the position depending on their connections.

Most states require 20/30 corrected or uncorrected. In other words, if your uncorrected vision is worse than 20/30 but can be corrected to 20/30 with glasses or contact lenses, you've met the criteria. If law enforcement is truly something you're interested in pursuing, I suggest you look more closely at your states requirements. Typically, officers start their career in patrol and advance per their experience and performance evaluations. It is unusual for someone to assume the responsibility and/or position of detective without spending at least a few years on the road as a patrol officer. Hope that helps and good luck.

The few cases I'm aware of where private investigators worked on criminal investigations were complex insurance fraud cases, where the insurance companies' investigators were actually welcomed by state or local law enforcement agencies. In those cases, the PIs had expertise and access to tools that made it worthwhile to include them. The problem I saw with those cases was that the involvement of unsworn, non-deputized agents sometimes caused concerns in the courts, or issues under LE confidentiality laws.

Can you imagine a public official telling a tax paying citizen that? Well... we had a neighbor who was a state official who gave the case to one of the PIs the state would hire. A year went by when the neighbor called and said the investigator said we would find her at such and such a place. Mom went and there she was. Did not have any issues with the cops, some places the bars would pay the local PD to have a cop on standby so we could quickly react to situations, then hand off to the cops as required. Have had the cops back me up when I got into rough situation (one I was sure I was about to have my ass kicked and right before it went down I heard some one say hands up, and the shunk of an asp coming out. I looked back and saw two cops, one with the asp, one with a taser. That situation ended immediately. We had a number of small level racially divided gang fights in some of the bars I worked in (who's great idea it was for the Lebanese, Black, and Asian gangs to hang out at the same place is beyond me, fortunately the white and native gangs avoided that particular place though did show up a lot to anther bar I worked at, though there was a lack of race based divide there).

A murder investigation that resulted in 11 persons going to prison. He worked with the police they gave him credit for this thats why he is in the hall of fame. I know many P.I. that work rape cases burglary cases murders ext... Every one arrested has a right to a defense. They do the same thing as police detective in reverse.

In my state there are a lot of former law enforcement officers that get into private investigating. Cops have no problem with PI's. We frequently used to get advisals from them when they set up to do surveillances. When it comes to similarities between police work and PI work, surveillance happens in both lines of work. In police work it is usually done by special units such as narcotics and a few others. Not always filming in police work though.

Private Investigators are licensed professionals who can investigate civil or criminal matters. They primarily build cases for litigation with law firms...They investigate wrongful death, auto accidents, medical malpractice food poisoning, fraud, child abuse. They also handle corporate espionage, financial crimes (banks, insurance companies) Pi’s track and apprehend fugitives on behalf of bond agents.
All government investigative agencies in this country are based off of and modeled after a private investigate agency called The Pinkerton National Detective Agency. The private sector was the first investigative law enforcement agency in the U.S. (Look it up)
More over private investigators also lead in combating human trafficking and cyber security...Just a little additional info to chew on! God Bless!

The way I see it is, you either want to do FBI, PI, COs, Police, Sheriff, Military, Swat, Task Force, homicide detective, child protective service etc.. each are all personality and skill based careers. I'm a low key person and I wouldnt want to have to draw a weapon everyday, also as a PI, I feel that you're still doing "police" work but just in the background. EVERY role is essentially needed.
Furthermore every job has something "boring". If I were a PI, I'd be bored following a cheating spouse. If I were a police officer, I'd be bored doing traffic duty.
By the year 2021, PI career is expected to grow by 3,041. This means that the PI careers are expanding into other fields.
I wish someone would really talk about PI day to day so other people can decide if this is the right career for them. I have yet found a video.

Most annoying call I have heard of was someone calling 911 about the incorrect pizza toppings on their pizza that was just delivered.
And they keep calling back till a few officers had to show up to the callers residence to inform them with possible arrest for crank calls and harassing the 911 operators for falsely reporting an emergency that was a non emergency call.
Some people are just obsessed with pizza and the toppings they want, lol.

Tommy I understand the annoying security guard issues. I have been in the security field for over 25 years. Up here in Canada we have a college program (police foundations) for people can't take to assist them with getting on a police service. But when we get graduates from this program the first thing I tell them you are working security you are not on a police service, so shelve the book knowledge. It's these people that give security a bad name. They try too much and too hard. As you have said when the police arrive on site give them quick briefing on what happened then stand back and let them do their job.

Anyone can "investigate" crimnal cases. As an attorney. I've done it countless times. The method of use of the "data" is different. Frankly, if it is a non-cop investigating such a matter it is because no one cares what the cops think. The data goes to the DA or, in all my cases, DoJ. Your opions here represent the lowest possible level of investigations. How much work have you done on criminal actions wherein billions are at stake?
Great work for it's scale, but extremely myopic.
Every American has an unrestricted right to investigate crime. Interference with governmental work on the same crime can be a serious problem, unless, for example, it is criminal governmental action. Where on Earth do you think the entire field of journalism fits in? I respect your work greatly. But your legal opinions are based on a career in law enforcement, not law.
To the young lady, get a law degree. You can jump right over this little stuff.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  5 лет назад +1

Yes, as long as there is no obstruction of an ongoing investigation anyone can investigate anything. But, nobody is hiring private eyes to investigate hot murder cases and those private eyes aren't then getting into car chases and shootouts to catch the bad guys like on TV.

So why wouldn't cops investigate stolen property where the man left finger prints on the window? I had that happen, and cops refused to even write a police report cause they said fingerprints takes time and they would have to eliminate all the family members. THE MAN"S HAND PRINT WAS ON THE WINDOW! Keystone cops at their finest imho! BTW--I found out it was a tow truck driver doing NIGHTS and going around and breaking into cars in neighborhoods, but cops didn't believe it.

I’m a private investigator and I get paid $35 an hour which on average a cop gets paid $30 an hour. 100% of my coworkers are ex law enforcement, I’m the only one who’s not
And I get paid the least . My coworkers get paid $50 an hour. The company I work for charges $139 an hour.. this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about I investigate illegal stuff on a daily basis because cops aren’t doing anything about it so I solve it. We have more access to backgrounds and bank searches and getting Intel on an individual than cops do. When a police department is hiring for new police officers they hire my company to do background checks on individuals... my company has been hired from people who have been falsely convicted of murder to prove their innocence and we have done so also I work burglary and assault cases all the time.. And just to let you people know there is a difference between private investigating an executive protection. Executive protection is an private security team that a lot of private investigators do.

Does Cook Co have a holdover 'Auxiliary' from the Civil Defense days?
We do (armed and have Peace Officer status when on a detail), and have generally positive relationships with the patrol officers. There is occasionally an undercurrent of 'wannabe' / 'overtime stealer' attitude, though. Especially from a particular muni.
The County suits love us, of course, because we're practically free.

We don't really have that much here. There are part timers but no real "voulenteer" cops here. Nearby lake county Indiana though has many auxiliary sheriff's deputies and some of their small towns have reserve or auxiliary police officers that do things like direct traffic and such. They don't generally answer criminal calls for service alone though.
