In "Merry Go Round", the 12th episode of season one, an old war buddy of Diamond has turned up on the wrong side of the law, with deadly results. Does the private eye help his friend, or turn him in? James Best (of the "Dukes of Hazzard" fame) guest stars.

David was a heavy smoker and drinker.
His best friend Stuart Whitman was driving past his home and saw the ambulance raced inside but sadly he had passed heart attack in bed around 3am. Very sad great actor and handsome

Off-screen, he burned himself out with boozing and round-the-clock partying, nothing like the quiet, polite persona affected by the characters he played on t.v..
Surprisingly, he was Jewish, although his publicity machine obscured his origins. He was buried in the "segregated" Hillside cemetery in L.A..

Lacks the charm and wit of a Blake Edwards radio show of the same name starring Dick Powell.

Powell decided to go in a different direction when the 1956 pilot he produced- starring Don Taylor, and based on a radio script- didn't quite work out to his satisfaction. He believed David Janssen was a better choice to play "Diamond". The fact the series lasted three years proved he was right.
